THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (Comcast Movies: All Movies) The conceit here is that we are watching found footage left behind by a trio of students who went into the woods to film something horrible and were never seen again. It works with the clammy, unnerving force of a bad dream. Like so many potent horror movies, it’s fed by a cheesy, primal look — and it gets much more mileage from dread than most films in the genre do from gore. (R; runs through Feb. 14)

THE BLIND SIDE (Max on Comcast) Sandra Bullock plays a Memphis woman who takes in an enormous, athletic African-American. He thrives. She thrives. The film is hard to resist. But it’s another Hollywood movie about a black male rescued from God knows what either by nice white people or sports. Here it’s both. How good we feel is directly proportional to how blind we’re willing to be. (PG-13; runs through Feb. 17) WESLEY MORRIS

CATS AND DOGS (HBO on Comcast) Canines battle felines in a James Bond-ish plot, meant to amuse us with how much special-effects wizardry can make their combat look like the human stuff of action movies. The effects are inventive, but so relentless they eventually make it clear how little the movie has to offer. (PG; runs through Feb. 14)
