This new labor reality series is from Thom Beers, the maker of “Deadliest Catch,’’ “Ice Road Truckers,’’ “Lobstermen,’’ “Verminators,’’ and, well, you get the picture. “Coal’’ will look into the coal-mining industry, focusing on Mike Crowder and Tom Roberts, the co-owners of Cobalt Mine in Westchester, W. Va. The action will follow the explosions that open surface mines, the daily dangers of working in the dark recesses of the Earth, and the impact this kind of job has on the families of the employees. The Fallen Idol 9:30 p.m., TCM
I love this 1948 movie, which was written by Graham Greene (based on his story “The Basement Room’’) and directed by Carol Reed in between “Odd Man Out’’ and “The Third Man.’’ It’s about a diplomat’s child who is in awe of the family butler, Baines, played by Ralph Richardson. There is adultery, a death, a cover-up, and a moral dilemma; there is psychological drama with Freudian symbolism, including the boy’s pet snake; there is a memorable game of hide and seek; and there is disillusionment as seen through a child’s point of view.
