HUGH HEFNER: PLAYBOY, ACTIVIST AND REBEL (Showtime on Comcast) Does Hugh Hefner own a pair of jeans? It’s a question that misses the point of the Hefner experience. But it’s the sort of thing you leave Brigitte Berman’s fawning new Hefner documentary wondering. He sits around in his famous silk robe and pajamas and explains all the good he’s done for the oppressed and the horny. But, really, what you want to know is when the pajamas started. (R; runs through Sept. 18)

WESLEY MORRIS

A SINGLE MAN (Showtime on Comcast) Colin Firth has been our stalwart Hollywood Brit for so long you may have forgotten he can act. Fashion designer Tom Ford directs sensitively but without much subtlety; Firth brings the latter. (R; runs through Sept. 20) TY BURR

JIMMY NEUTRON: BOY GENIUS (Showtime on Comcast) Jimmy Neutron may be a prodigy who invents alternate modes of transportation made from bubble gum, but he still has to sneak past his parents to attend the grand opening of an amusement park on a school night. That’s one of the charms of this computer-animated film, which displays enough smart, likable humor to keep adults amused and enough spirited action to keep kids interested. (G; runs through Sept. 20)
