No immunity

Posted by Joanna Weiss May 16, 2006 04:08 PM

Richard Hatch, the winner of the original "Survivor," was sentenced today to 51 months in prison for failing to pay taxes on his $1 million prize, along with other income. No matter that Hatch's star has fallen significantly in recent years (now, the first "Richard Hatch" that comes to mind is the actor from "Battlestar Galactica"). This was a clear case of fame fueling prosecution -- most tax cases are handled as civil matters, but the government seeks out defendants who will generate publicity and send a message. So is Hatch a government scapegoat, or did he get what was coming to him? Boston.com readers have been hashing it out on the message boards; join the fray.
