WHDH-TV (Channel 7) shakeup

Posted by Suzanne Ryan May 16, 2006 03:53 PM

WHDH-TV (Channel 7) early-evening anchor Chris May has confirmed that he is leaving the station this summer after more than seven years of employment.

A person close to the station, with knowlege of the details, confirmed that weekend anchor Juli Auclair is leaving this month as well.

Reporter Ryan Owens left a month ago because his contract was not renewed.

Meanwhile, weekend meteorologist Chikage Windler is in discussions regarding her contract, the person said. Chikage declined to comment today. But a new meteorologist Jeremy Reiner starts at the station June 5, covering the weekday morning and noon newscasts.

All of this news follows the announcement that Channel 7 evening anchor Caterina Bandini is leaving the station in the fall, because she's expecting twins.

Do the math -- that's three anchors away and a reporter.

To be fair, high turnover is common in television. On-air personalities generally work under contracts, which often aren't renewed.

Still, this doesn't look good.

Michael Carson, general manager at Channel 7, said that there is "not a bloodbath" going on. "It's coincidence that their contracts were up within a week or two of each other. That explains the timing."

Caterina, of course, is leaving of her own accord.

The general manager added that the perception that Channel 7 is undergoing some big makeover is not the reality. He declined to discuss specific personnel details because of company policy.

He did say that he has hired a replacement for Chris May. He's not ready, though, to announce that person yet.

Juli Auclair is married to her co-anchor Phil Lipof. She did not return a phone call seeking comment today. But clearly, relocating to another station is going to be a challenge.

I missed Chris May's phone call this afternoon. And now he's on the air.

I left a message for Ryan Owens but I'm told he's no longer there.

Stay tuned. The new hires are sure to be announced soon.

  1. Channel 7 news sucks! I wouldn't watch it if my life depended on it after what they did to channel 56 a week before Christmas. If you are over 30 they don't want you.
