"Whisperer" Power

Posted by Matthew Gilbert July 13, 2006 08:11 AM

So I find that I’m a little obsessed with “The Dog Whisperer.” And I’m going with it, as my TiVo collects episode after episode. I’m even starting to wish my dog were just a tad less well-adjusted, so I could call in Cesar Millan for some rehabilitation help.

The series, on the National Geographic Channel, studies the owners as much as the troubled dogs. But the show is really all about Cesar, the indisputable leader of the pack. He brings a quiet but firm sense of leadership to the dogs, who recognize it and respond to it instantly. And as he sits listening to the owners, you can see him defusing their neuroses wth his almost preternaturally calm eyes.

Cesar delivers a fascinating lesson in asserting true power, rather than trying too hard to be powerful out of feelings of powerlessness. Screaming and yelling at your difficult dog (or your friends/lovers/family?) is much less effective than gentle confidence. I'm just sayin'...

Cesar has a blog, of course, and he’s plugging the coming of “Dog Whisperer Week” on NGC starting July 30.
