"CSI": Danger, Danger Will Robinson

Posted by Matthew Gilbert September 25, 2006 06:12 PM

Sigh. Last week’s season premiere of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" was an aimless stinker, culminating in the rape of Catherine. I’m afraid the writers have decided to emphasize the personal stories of the CSI team members, in order to compete with the character drama of "Grey’s Anatomy." Bad idea.

As a result, "CSI" is at risk of compromising what it does best: sharp and blackly humorous procedural plots. This new development with Catherine, and future stories involving the affair between Grissom and Sara, go against the business-like grotesquery that has made "CSI" better than most of the other procedural crime series now on TV, including the two other "CSI" shows. Please don't blow it, folks.

PS: Desperate stunt casting by the likes of John Mayer and Danny Bonaduce won't help matters.
