'Idol:' Kicking it Old School

I'll hold off on tonight's results until after the jump. But first, I'll say this: Michael Buble, you may specialize in songs from the 1940s, but you're still too young to be a dirty old man. I don't need to know that you have the hots for Antonella. Honestly. Ick.
As for the elimination of Gina - I have to admit, it made me sad. In part, that's because I actually liked her performances from the last two weeks; once she stopped trying to shout her way through rock songs, I thought her voice had potential. And once she shed the rocker-grrl pretensions, it seemed like a little of her I'm-so-awesome attitude slipped away, too. When she tossed away her little pickle good-luck charm, I decided I wanted to be her friend.
Also, it was clear that her fellow contestants really liked her (though Jordin seems to cry fairly easily). And it always puts a little knot in my stomach when the sing-off song accidentally turns out to have Deep Personal Meaning. Sweet touch when Gina changed a word and sang, "I'll get by." She will. She'll have fun on tour. Not so sure about a record deal, but time will tell.
I was reasonably sure Phil would be gone this week, but perhaps his little ode to his wife helped him out. Haley obviously got an assist from her dress. And if I had to blame anything for Gina's slightly-too-early departure, it would be the makeup. She looked like Marilyn Manson on Tuesday night, and that's a little too weird for the "Idol" fandom.
As for Sanjaya? No surprise. And nothing to say but: Stay tuned. I'll be curious to see what tactic Simon pulls out next week.
