End of Days? Maybe Not.

The "Jericho" fans have succeeded in bullying CBS into reconsidering their favorite show, according to this article. When the network announced the "Jericho" cancellation last month, enraged supporters of the end-of-the-world drama began deluging CBS with email and bags of nuts. Finally, yesterday, "Jericho" creator Carol Barbee said that CBS is talking to her and the other producers about bringing back the show for eight episodes -- and more, if the numbers are good. Barbee says the writers were not interested in the two-hour wrap-up movie CBS offered.

I'm tempted to say that CBS's change of heart represents the newfound power of ordinary people in the age of the internet, or something contemporary like that. But back in the early 1980s, "Cagney and Lacey" went through a very similar process. The female-buddy cop show, which premiered in 1982, was cancelled by CBS in 1983. But after campaigns by the show's producers and letter writers from across the country, as well as some Emmy attention, CBS brought the show back in 1984 for seven trial episodes that ultimately led to four more seasons.
