New "Dexter" Is Killer

I have news for "Dexter" fans. I've seen the first four episodes of the new season, which starts on Showtime on Sept. 30, and they are EXCELLENT. The first season was so extraordinary and so neatly self-enclosed, I was very skeptical about stretching the concept into another season. Would the writers feel obligated to make Dexter more likable and ordinary and less bizarre? Would they put him on some hokey path toward healing? Would the show strain for another season-long crime arc?
But these new episodes are tightly written, and point toward a season that will have an almost meta atmosphere (I don't want to give anything away here). Plus, Dexter's blackly comic interior monologues, which Michael C. Hall delivers pitch perfectly, are very much present. None of the characters on this show seem superfluous, and the addition of Keith Carradine as an FBI agent is a strong one.
Now if you're one of those people who hasn't seen the first season, GET TO WORK. Rent it and study up. This is a great show to power watch over a fall weekend or two.
