Britney Doesn't Blow It

No, Britney Spears did not become a comedy sensation tonight during her guest spot on “How I Met Your Mother.” But then Our Lady of Perpetual Melodrama won’t become an object of ridicule tomorrow, either, as she was after her schleppy MTV Awards performance last fall.
She was O -- wait for it -- K.
Phew. The last thing this underrated CBS series needs is to become part of the endless Britney Goes Down the Tubes narrative. You know, it used to be the clever sitcom “How I Met Your Mother,” but now it’s just that show where Brit wrecked what was left of her train while we watched, agog. Spears evoked only good will tonight, and also remnant feelings that maybe she will indeed come back from the far reaches of Never-Never-Land.
She was as sweet and vapid as she needed to be in the episode, playing a ditzy receptionist named Abby in a dermatologist’s office. The plot: Ted had a crush on her boss, Stella, played by Sarah Chalke of “Scrubs,“ while Abby had a crush on Ted. Spears seemed to be following the footsteps of Madonna, who has also tried to finesse her way through comedy by playing the dumb blonde. Truth be told, Spears really didn’t need to reach very far.
Spears’ best moment came early on, when Stella first begins to remove Ted’s butterfly tattoo -- his “tramp stamp,” which has been mentioned in earlier episodes. Ted screams, upon which Spears’ Abby rushes into the office exclaiming, “Doctor, are you all right? I heard a woman screaming in here.” How many times did Spears shoot the scene? Who knows, but she got it right.
The best thing about the Britney spot -- aside from all the much-needed publicity for a show that CBS still has not renewed -- was the way it highlighted the talents of Chalke. Next to Spears, Chalke showed just how good a comic actress she is. She fit into the ensemble perfectly -- something that doesn’t come easily for actors better known for other series. Her timing was swift, and her chemistry with Josh Radnor was pleasing. If she is the mother of the title -- and I don’t think she is -- that wouldn’t be a bad thing. Their two-minute date was the kind of romantic resolution that “How I Met Your Mother” arrives at without inducing nausea.

Did you notice Stella said she went to a party on St. Patrick's Day? I wonder which one, because Ted said his wife had been at the same party.
I liked Britney's role and I liked that Sarah Chalke's role was the bigger one. She was great and I hope to see a lot of her on the show.
I noticed that too. They had that whole St. Paddie's Day thing last week where Ted's at the party misbehaving with Barney, and the yellow umbrella is there, etc. And then they seem to go out of their way to have Stella mention that the only time she's been out was a St. Patrick's Day party that she left early. Seemed like they went out of their way to mention that. Of course, it could be a red herring.
So I've figured out what my problem is with HIMYM this year. It's Ted. The show deflates when he's the center of the action, as has been the case most of this season. He somehow manages to be bland, cheesy and annoying all at once. It's hard to care about the main premise of the show when the central character in that premise just seems so inconsequential and boring. This was the problem I had with season 1 as well. But last year was more focused on Marshall and Lily, and Ted somehow seemed less grating when he was dating Robin. This year he's just rubbing me the wrong way again, with the stupid perpetual bed-head and the "hellooooo" thing that he does. Ugh. That's why I fear for the long-term prospects of HIMYM.
Agreed that Britney did just fine, and Sarah Chalke was great. But I still think the writers made a big mistake ruling Robin out so early as the "Mother" of the title. The only time I've found Ted tolerable is when he was dating her.
HIMYM stinks. One of the worst of the remaining sitcoms on TV. It mkade perfect sense for Spears to land here.
