'Idol:' Baby please don't go

Posted by Joanna Weiss March 26, 2008 09:22 PM

No spoilers here, if we can help it, so I'll leave my brief and mildly-depressed thoughts about tonight's elimination until after the jump. As for the rest of the show - well, I fast-forwarded through a lot of it, but I did catch Danny Noriega making squishy, kissy faces behind Simon the whole time. I still miss that kid.

Boo, hiss. That's the main thing I have to say about this sad turn of events. Not that I thought Chikeze was ever going to win it all. And not that he didn't do this to himself, to some extent, by giving in to his irrational desire to sing a ballad. But still. I would have liked to see him dancing around in argyle for a few weeks more. And I understand full well why Kristy survived this week, but who exactly is the fan base for Ramiele?

  1. Oh, boo-hoo. I agree with you on Ramiele; but, Chikeze blew it.

  1. "..who exactly is the fan base for Ramiele" you ask.

Well the large and growing American Filipino population who are very proud to have one of their own on American Idol. Ethnic populations that are not usually represented on these types of shows are extremely enthusiastic supporters.

Also teen girls like her style. They find their shyness endearing and the way she begs for support with her little puppy dog expressions. I was surprised Jason ended up in bottom three as he is selling that same self conscious teen goofiness.

I don't like her performances but I took you at your word when you said you don't know her fan base is.

  1. There are 88 million people in the Philippines.

    There are 4 million Filipino-Americans.

    Long Live Ramiele!!

  1. Well, it was partly a rhetorical question, JimS. Still, where "Idol" is concerned, I am always curious about which is the most powerful force: identity politics, teeniboppiness, or pity.

  1. Ramiele has obviously just been singing Karoake up there whereas Chikeze had some real talent and charisma when he wasn't Chikcheezy singing ballads. But like Simon says, American Idol is a popularity contest, not a singing contest and this will carry the Ramieles and Syeshas of the world far into the contest.

  1. How on earth did you post this at 9:22 when Chikeze wasn't eliminated until 9:56?

  1. I like Ramiele. I am a middle aged Irish American woman and I think she is great! She has a wonderful voice. She is truly sweet. I hope she finds her niche and continues in the competition and makes it big in the music industry. When the show began, it was all kids like Ramiele- not polished professionals. I could seriously do without Brooke!

  1. so now this is a voting contest for your own kind. If one person wrote (like me) wrote they where voting for the Typical White Person, there would be war. I thought this was a singing contest, not a singing "race".
All your double standards amaze me, what do you think this is a Presidential Campaign or something???

  1. I get that there is a large Filipino population that enjoys supporting one of their own (Jasmine Trias- has sold a boat load of records world wide) but at some point don't they have to recognize that poor Ramiele is out of her league?

This isn't a rip, she's a sweet girl and I liked her during auditions and Hollywood week but since the cutdown she has yet to deliver even one decent performance.

You're right Chikeze was never going to win it all and his self-indulgent decision to sing another cheesy ballad sealed his fate but how much more interesting would it be to see what he would do over the next couple of week. With Ramiele we know exactly what we'll get- a good effort falling short of the mark.

The Kristy thing- she clearly should have been gone weeks ago- she is this years Sanjaya.

Finally- you posted at 3:55 am, when do you sleep?

  1. While I'm not a huge Ramiele fan, the fact that people are voting for her just because she's a Filipino-American is exactly what ruins this show. I vote for someone because he/she is the best performer not because he/she is male, female, White, African American, Gay, Latin, Filipino or whatever. This is supposed to be a show to find the best talent, not some popularity contest where performers are pushed forward because of how they look or what their hairstyle is that day (yes, I am talking about that kid).

  1. Like Simon said "the viewers are smarter than you think"

Let's keep this a Talent competition folks! Not a popularity contest!!

  1. Honestly, I believe when the number goes to 10 contestants, we have more of a popularity contest than an actual talent contest. They are all terffic singers. They will all make a name for themselves. It really comes down to how many of their own "people" jam the phone lines.
On another note, however, what I don't feel is right is the age disparity. A 17 year old high school kid should not be pitted against a 29 year old guy who has maturity and stage presence.

  1. My daughter is Fillipino & Swedish, and we LOVE watching Ramiele!! She's a positive role model for all young girls!! She doesn't wear revealing clothes, and she's cute & humble, and NOT overtly sexy like a lot of the women on tv today. She's beautiful without being the blonde, blue eyed bombshell. I don't want my daughter thinking that you have to be blonde to be beautiful. Yeah, this wasn't her best week, but I think she'll recover. I think Dave Cook has a chance to win the whole thing, but we'll support Ramiele to the end!

  1. Rameile's fan base? All of Asia and Asian Americans and that adds up to a lot of people! I was more surprised at the bottom three though I suspected Chikezie would be one of them but Syesha over Ramiele based on the previous evening's performance? I'm still scratching my head on that one.
I understand the voting process but always felt it is flawed due primarily to the teen girl vote. It explains Sanjaya and explains why all the cute but less talented boys always stick around longer than they should. Since the judges have more experience in the music industry than the voting public, when it gets down to the final 10, I think the judges should have the right to reverse a decision, think of them as superdelegates making your vote not count in the end. As of today, I see David Cook winning it all.

  1. Come on folks. This is a singing competition. Not a popularity or ethnic nationality vote. Ramiele must go soon and really should have last night based upon singing. Chikeze did shoot himself in the foot with his song choice. Kristy on the other hand stayed for 1 or 2 more weeks based upon her song choice.

Ramiele, Kristy, Syesha and Jason are next....then the final 5 will get interesting.

  1. It's great to be proud of your heritage but, Ramiele does not deserve to be in the show at this level. She is usually out of tune and she has to go. Her song choices are way above her ability and, quite frankly, she just covers the original artist.

Who cares if she dresses cool. She can't sing! There is hope though, she is very young and her voice is still developing. Maybe she just entered the competition too early. In a few years she will have better control of her voice and be more mature.

I don't wish to be unkind. I was not the best singer at her age, either.

  1. i'd like to let you know that I am a big fan of hers!!! Beside I'm glad chacheesey (or whatever his name is) was voted off. He should have been gone in the begining. No one knows who he is and he already has one name! You're not Madonna and you're not Prince! And talking back to Simon. It's his job to belittle you! No one thinks you're special because you talked back to him. And that's all i have to say about--in the words of Simon-- Jacuzzi!

From, The happiest American Idol fan!!!

  1. Wait. Let's work this out. So, despite Ramiele not being a good singer (she has been off key in nearly every performance) and not being a good performer (standing there with no emotion is not good performance) and having essnetially no style of originality means that she should be on the show because of her ethnicity? She is Filipino, so she gets a ticket to stardom?

We call that racism at its purest. She should be ashamed of representing that community with her subpar talent in the same way Kristy should be ashamed of using boring Lee Greewood patriotic goop to stay on the show. They both should be gone. As well as that stoner Castro.

Finally, are people high putting Syesha in the low 3? That was a perfect singing performance. I've listend to it back about 10 times...flawless.

  1. You can say long live whomeveryou want, however her ethnicity has nothing to do with her bad singing. She is frequently out of tune and out of sync with the band and back-up singers.

They are looking for THE BEST ALL AROUND VOCALIST AND PEFORMER. Not the best Philipino, not the best Black, White or purple with yellow spots performer.

She is at best a mediocre karaoke singer and will be voted off eventually.

  1. I could find 10 better singers in Boston alone. Other than Archuletta they are all bad. Some worse than others. Ramiele being the worst of the them. Who is taking time to vote for her? She sucks.

  1. I'm Italian-American and I like the Irish girl. I don't understand voting for someone of your ethnic background if they suck.

  1. To quote Simon, " This is supposed to be a singing competition!" Carly, David Archuletta, David Cook and Saisha are the only real singers in the whole cast of characters!!

lots of good singers left we'll see how it plays out .......

  1. I still see the voting results as a popularity contest. We will see how many weeks Carly, Brooke and Siyesha survive. Young, tweenybopper girls cannot relate to them and will not vote for them ultimately.

  1. American Idol is a popularity contest until it gets down to about the top four. Just look at the audience with all the signs and the screaming. The age group in the audience consists mostly of "tweens" and teenagers. That's why Jason, David A., Ramiele and Kristi Lee keep getting voted in. They are "cute." The top three should be the singers with the talent: David Cook, Carly Smithson and Michael Johns. Look at the fiasco of Taylor Hicks. Bo Bice should have one. What is Taylor doing now?? Don't let that happen again.

  1. As Simon put it a couple of weeks ago... This is a "TALENT" competition and should be voted that way. This is not a competition based on how many Filipino-Americans there are to vote for Ramiele.
