Should "Scrubs" Come Back?

The fate of "Scrubs" remains a little vague. NBC will not be giving the sitcom a series finale this season, and the show is said to have a commitment from ABC for next year. Indeed, episodes are still in production and people on the show are saying that they're filming for ABC. ABC, though, has made no official announcement yet.

Personally, I'm disappointed. I am a huge fan of "Scrubs," one who has been screaming about the show's greatness since it premiered. The cast is one of TV's best-ever comedy ensembles, the writing is imaginative, heartfelt, and funny; the production values are extraordinary; and the point of view is completely original. But I gotta say, I think this season should the last for "Scrubs," which has been losing its mojo during the past year or two. The series certainly hasn't become awful, but it has become a little less fresh, a little lost and redundant.

After seven seasons, any great sitcom is going to decline a bit. There's no shame in that. But there is a lot to be said against pushing a show onto the air long after it has lost its creative zing. "Will & Grace," so strong for a few years, is the perfect cautionary tale -- it almost squandered its reputation as a classic by dragging on aimlessly for an extra year or two or three. By the time "Will & Grace" ended, many of its most passionate fans were saying "Good Riddance."

Perhaps the "Scrubs" writers will surprise me and come back with a surge of good material. Fingers, as they are so often when it comes to TV, crossed.
