'Idol:' Human drama

Posted by Joanna Weiss April 30, 2008 09:19 PM

Yes, we'll talk about the elimination after the jump. But first: Simon reconnects with his first kiss? That was actually kind of cute. On the other hand, I was disappointed that the "Idol" producers didn't honestly acknowledge last night's Grand Paula Gaffe. Ryan only referred to unspecified "rumors" about Paula that he said weren't true, leaving us to wonder...which rumors, exactly? That she was under the influence? That she couldn't count? That she was leaving the show? (I hadn't heard that one.) That she had some kind of "Lost"-style time travel issue, and thus didn't realize she wasn't watching the dress rehearsal?

As today's "Idol" chat made clear, there are some conspiracy theories floating around about pre-scripted judges' comments and producers' heavy hands. I'm not inclined to believe them. I do know that the judges can, and often do, watch the dress rehearsals, and that they sometimes start forming their comments ahead of the live show. Doesn't bother me, so long as they actually watch the performances. And I do not subscribe to the notion that someone is writing out incoherent sentences for Paula to read out loud. I believe that her thoughts, rainbow-filled and psychedelic as they are, are purely her own.

Oh, whatever. Water under the bridge. And speaking of waterworks...

Of course Brooke bawled, but really, it was time. And making it to the top 5 is not too shabby, especially when you stop and start songs twice over the course of the season. Will she have a big career after the "Idol" tour? Hard to say. If she's going to go the singer-songwriter route, she's going to need songwriting skills, and it's impossible to know if she does. She has fans, though. And ultimately, very little to cry about.

Will Jason be next? I'm a little afraid to guess...

Oh -- a little bit of housekeeping. First of all, thanks again to everyone who took part in the chat; the link is here. Second, if anyone doesn't want to rely on the Boston.com homepage for a link to the blog, please -- bookmark us! Or sign up for an RSS feed, right here.

  1. What is up with having a whole week of Neil Diamond, and **no** Red Sox tie-in? Even Lost has Red Sox tie-ins!

  1. I actually felt kind of badly watching Brooke up there tonight, although I agree it was time for her to go. I had not been a fan of hers and felt they gave her way too many passes, but tonight she seemed sincere and human and watching her sing while crying was too much.
I loved the Simon's first crush call. He was clearly caught off guard and blushing. That was adorable.
Say what you will about Paula, she is entertaining.

  1. Good to see Brooke go.
That show could have been over in a half hour. It went on way too long. Perhaps IDOL itself is going on way too long. It's just not that interesting anymore.
I hope the 4 remaining really get better next week.

  1. Why do they have to make this elimination show an hour??? Especially now with only 5 (or now less!) of them? Yes I know, advertising $$$$.

At least the babies get their nanny back.

  1. I knew Brooke was leaving...it was her time indeed and i hope Syesha is going next week. We shall see =)

  1. who is voting for Jason, he really needs to be gone! He seems so bored and shocked that he's still there. Fire up another doobie and let the bad songs roll

  1. Poor Brooke. I liked her, although clearly she was not going to be the winner. I am glad to a see Syesha still standing. Jason, however, had better watch out for that giant clock ticking over his head.

  1. If Paula were a blond it would be a non-issue

The rest of the voting goes like this

    4 Syesha
    3 David A
    2 Jason
1 David Cook----American Idol and a very successful one

  1. Best part of last night's show, in my opinion, was Natasha Bedingfield.

Why must David A and David C look so concerned about the results....such drama from the two most popular by votes and according to judges. So David A looks as though he is ready to drop to his knees and thank the lord for heading to the couch and David C who was told by Paula the night before that she was looking at the next American Idol, making those am-I-safe-or-going-home, eyes.

And Brooke was crying before Ryan made it official so on some level she had to know it was over before it was over, and mercifully so.

Don't for see Syesha and Jason being able to outlast the two David regardless of their next song choices.

  1. It's time for Jason Castro to go. Over and done. No talent at all. He's squeaking by week after week because he's cute and teenyboppers keep re-dialing in his votes. I am thrilled to see Brooke go.

  1. Natasha Bedingfield? That song was horrible with an annoying hook and it looked clear the musicians were not even playing their instruments live.

Although, I thought it INCREDIBLY funny when she said she wanted to say "Hi" to David and then David Cook stood up only to be dissed as she went to Archuleta instead!!! LOL!!!

  1. I too thought Simon reuniting with his first kiss was very cute. He actually started blushing. It showed a softer side of Simone that we don’t actually see. As for Brooke, it’s about time. She should have left along time ago. I still believe that the votes should be carried over from week to week, that way we know who actually the best is, and the worst. It shouldn’t be judged on one night’s performance, it should be on overall performance. We all know it will end up between the two Davids. We’ll just have to wait and see which one.

  1. All I have to say is thank goodness for DVR. There was no reason to drag that show out for 90 minutes, and fortunately, I was able to fast forward through 85 of them.

It was definitely time for Brooke to go...Jason and Syesha are probably next. I think David A will hang in there b/c he gets the teenybopper vote. And, hopefully, David Cook will win in the end (lame 1/2 AC/DC jacket and all!)

  1. Ok, so a bunch of frat guys are jumping on the Neil Diamond retro bandwagon and everyone sings Sweet Caroline at Red Sox games so Idol feels they have to make popstar wannabes sing his songs? Watching the Idols sing that medley at the beginning I felt like I was back watching Lawrence Welk with my grandparents or some 70s variety show like Donny and Marie. I expected them to break into "clang clang clang went the trolley" at the end. So next week is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame theme? Lets cross our fingers that the Idols are allowed to choose something that makes them sound their age and look like they are headed on tour, not straight to Branson.

  1. Jason next.
    Then Syesha.
    or vice versa.
    Doesn't matter.

BEST TALENT EVER! Brooke should have been gone 5 weeks ago. She did not progress. She went backwards and sideways. Here comes the Sun was horrible and I liked her in the beginning.

    Just kidding.

  1. I agree with Nate I laughed so loud when Cook stood up and Natasha went to Archuleta. That was classic! I know Jason should go but he is so easy on the eyes! Then there's Paula------Dauh!!!! says it all =)

  1. Joanna,

Impossible to know if Brooke has songwriting skills? A quick google or YouTube search will uncover some of her earlier self-written music, and it's pretty good.

I have her CD and it's great. It's too bad she's too young to have cashed in on the Lilith Fair crowd when that was hot.

  1. Actually David Cook stood up to be polite as did Sheysa (Or did you think Sheysa thought she was going to get a hug too?) --- and there was a space next to David A -- at least that is how I saw it... funny how depending on if you actually like someone you see their actions as being positive or negative. For example the whole time I kept waiting for Jason to take the mouse out of his mouth as he sat there with a big cat grin for once again being safe when clearly he isn't very good at all.

  1. I would say that BROOK E has one of the great voices ever in american idol. after every week of their performance i rushed trough my computer and download ther songs courtesy of ituens. of course, im one of those billions of fans out there who loves brook so much that we wanted her to stay. but that's reality tv goes. im pretty much sure that brooke has a bright and WHITE future after her elimination in AMERICAN IDOL.

  1. Wasn't Cook just getting out of the way?

Posted by Tim May 1, 08 11:05 AM
  1. David C knew she wasn't going to hug him. He was being a gentleman. That's why he got up and moved away from her, to give her room to get to the little David. I thought that was obvious.

  1. I really don't see the "smugness" and "arrognace" everyone sees in David Cook. To me he seems like a quiet, introspective musician who is handling the craziness of being a huge TV personality incredibly well. He should be our American Idol and I hope the voters see that. It's interesting, though, how many people hate Archuleta (myself included) but do any of us vote? I would be more inclined to vote if I could vote people off the show. That would be an interesting format change, but I don't see it happening. Thank you voters for finally getting rid of Brooke and saving Syesha.

  1. The "AC" on Cookie's Les Paul should stand for "Alternative Copycat". He absolutely Eddie Vedders everything. He's good, but not original. I'm waiting for the eyes to roll back in the head. God, I wish Brookie would have taken the dreaded JC along with her. There is no large stage musical future for either. Didn't watch the show again. I like the day-after sniping better...Thou shalt not bow down to false idols!

  1. David C acts like he's afraid he might be going each week because Simon once told him he was cocky and not as good as he thinks himself to be. So, I think he's trying to be humble for Simon's benefit. He's clearly the winner - or should be - if the teeny bopper girls don't text their little fingers off for David A instead. David A is a joke! Yea, he can sing. But, the kid has no personality - he can't dance - he constantly looks afraid - he doesn't seem to want to be there (I think he's doing it to please Daddy). He needs some age behind him and to find himself first. He's singing songs that are inconsistent with most teenage boy's likes. Brook was never going to win - but she has a nice voice as does Jason C - and it is different. I'm tired of the Syesha's - the Whitney Houston / Mariah Carey / Christina Agulera wannabes - that sound is so tired! Syesha should model and do Broadway.

  1. Thus lies the problem...half the audience was brought up on the thin, transparent, and, sadly, dull music of people like Natasha B...not their fault, just when they were born. So, they think the garbage delivered by her and Fergie and Mariah is good. Now, I'm inclined to say that Mr. Diamond did not fair much better, but it is clear that anyone who thinks NB was good will never understand why they have these kids sing Stevie Wonder of Smoky Robinson or Paul Simon or Neil Sedaka..

Paula - I stand by canned comments. She was not confused when she was reading her comments, then told us that they were David Cooke's comments (only to then begin with "You were fabulous, David" when addrerssing him (are we to believe that she meant David C. wasn't trying hard enough??), looked at Randy like she was being propped up by someone under the table, and in last night's "explanation" to Constantine, made no sense whatsoever. She also indicated that the notebooks were given them prior to the start of the live broadcast and not during the auditions.

Brooke - someone needed to tell her that this was American Idol and not the Apple Blossom Queen competition...she never seemed to grasp the magnitude of the whole thing. But, Joanna is correct...Top 5 is not too shabby and nothing to cry about.

  1. Very Very Happy that Brooke has gone home! I believe that she was over her head to begin with and should not have outlasted Michael Johns and Carly. But that's the way the idol cookie crumbles each season....

Several posters have commented on David Cook's "AC"...one noted that it was a "lame 1/2 AC/DC Jacket". I know this was mentioned before and it was definitely addressed in the chat transcript, but I'll mention it again...I believe that the AC on David's jacket and his guitar are in honor of his brother who is fighting cancer right now.

David Cook is the most talented of the five. I'm not seeing the "creepiness" nor the "arrogance". Hopefully, he wins it ALL! :)

  1. Is it me, or does Ryan Seacrest have a thing for Brooke? He seemed awfully attentive to her last night helping her wipe her tears and how about that embrace when he announced she was out!
