A 'Desperate' Rant

Why do people watch "Desperate Housewives"? Why? There are so many good shows on TV. But no, nearly 17 million people tuned in to last night's two-hour season-ending weirdfest, whether out of longtime loyalty, inertia, or fealty to the ABC promotions machine. (And yes, there are spoilers a-coming, so please stop reading if you don't want anything ruined by my complaints.)
First, the big shocker: The five-year flashforward. So "Lost," circa 2007. So "Battlestar Galactica," circa 2006. (Even down to the cryptic showrunner comment: Marc Cherry recently told the Associated Press that Edie, who decamped from Wisteria Lane a few weeks ago, "won't be back for a few years." Sneaky, dude.) So now we know that Gabrielle is going to have kids, and Bree is going to marry Orson, and Susan is going to wind up with someone who definitely isn't Mike. And that maybe we'll just be in the future, or maybe we'll go back-and-forth, Lost-style. Oh, and that Katherine is going to be just finey-fine, despite whatever trauma she endured, and maybe she'll even get a comedy plot.
Which brings me to my perpetual problem with the show, which I've complained about before and will probably gripe about again: the tone is so insanely inconsistent that it's hard to watch without feeling seasick. One minute, it's broad comedy, as the cartoonishly evil Gabrielle and her blind husband Carlos conspire to steal money from a drug dealer. (And why did Justine Bateman let them make her look so bad?) The next minute, it's melodramatic personal tragedy, as Lynnette's stepdaughter tries to send her to jail. (Poor Felicity Huffman. Just because she's a good dramatic actress, she gets all the turgid plotlines.) The next minute, it's dark mystery, as Katherine's ex-husband wreaks his graphically violent revenge.
And that's my biggest complaint of the entire finale: the reveal to Katherine's mystery, involving the death of a small child, was so disturbing and upsetting, and dispensed with so quickly, that it left me sick to my stomach. It certainly didn't belong on the same show as a plotline about whether to name a baby Maynard. Or a narration by the nauseatingly cheery Mary Alice "still dead" Young.

I agree that scene was disturbing and you're right, one minute you're cringing and one minute, laughing.
I do not know whay I watch: I like to read, enjoy the news, teach.......my husband thinks I just need the mindless, senseless, silliness down time
Personally, I loved the 5-year forward ending, but where was Edie in 5 years? Did Mike die of an overdose? Divorce? I thought that last part with Susan was great!
You are right on with your remarks.
I am not sure how this show hasn't lost all its viewers either. I watched the first couple seasons because of Felicity Huffman but as she got brushed to the side for the far less talented Eva Longoria and Teri Hatcher, I lost interest. I watched one episode a few weeks ago out of boredom (no more Rock of Love!) and found it to be just as bad as where I left off. The tone is another thing that turned me off. It's not campy enough to be camp and yet too campy to be serious.
I think it's one of those cases of a show starting out with good intentions, only to dumb itself down once it becomes popular. Much like Grey's Anatomy, which started out funny and intelligent. Unfortunately, by the time people realize they are being pandered to, they're too curious about the storylines to give up.
I liked the way the ladies all risked their freedom to lie to the police. If my wife and all her friends end up in jail someday I'll know what to tell my daughter. Thank you ABC! Mrs. B liked the 5-year flash forward and I think the writers strike was the cause of the "throw everything at us at once" finale. If only it was THE finale.
The show is SUPPOSED to be a mixture of all those things. If your brain can't process more than one emotion that says more about you than the show.
I would agree with the commentary that the show is a little ridiculous but so are the other shows you mention (Lost, Battlestar Galactica). Just because it's not set in a sci-fi fantasy world you don't like it? It's supposed to be a mix of everything - a little drama, a little comedy, etc. and most of all it's just supposed to be entertaining.
There are far worse things on television. Please explain how American Idol is still on tv period let alone remotely popular.
Exactly, D. The show is supposed to be a mixture of all the different speeds. It's comic. It's drama. It's soapy. If the writer can't handle it, then that doesn't make it a bad show, just one that violates her elitist tastes. I guess Amy R. and Joanna can soothe themselves with the classics, like "Rock of Love."
It makes it more interesting and keeps you on your toes if you have all of these different things happening. I think that if the show was only a comedy and never serious it would be boring and vice versa. It's the way people are, there is a comedian in all of us, but there are also serious times when we go through difficult situations, and that emotion is great to see in the show!
I find it interesting how many couples watch this show after the kid have gone to bed, preferably :>) And how many admit they watch together. Yes, I'll agree last night was disturbing, even for them, but we still find the humor, albeit dark most of the time, and love it.
As the husband of a devoted Housewives watcher, I pretty much see every episode but don't take the show too seriously. I like to point out the crazy parallels this how has with afternoon soap plotlines.
I don't think any of the 5 years later was supposed to have actually happened, I think they are showing you what could happen to everybody if there path stays unchanged. One decision can alter peoples lives and I think they will show why these things never happened in the season opener.
I could be wrong but they would never show you future plots on a cliffhanger, especially one's that make you angry. It's just to get everyone talking about what will happen next and build up suspense for the fall opener.
I actually thought that Sunday night's show signaled a return to the awesomeness of the first season after a really bad season 3 and a mostly lackluster season 4. It's one of those shows you either love or hate.
My only question is what idiot parents are letting their 10 year olds watch it? I teach, and a group of female students rushed up to me yesterday to ask if I'd seen it. I uncomfortably said that I didn't really think it was appropriate for me to talk about DH with them.
Then don't watch it. That's the only way terrible TV shows will go away.
Desperate Housewives is no different than any soap opera that comes on mid-morning. Just because it is aired at night doesn't make it a more serious or better quality show. Since Day One, the plotlines have always been all over the map. The fact that some of you feel so strongly about it (AND sat through a 2-hour show) means that a part of you still really likes it.
Just admit it: It's a good escape from reality for an hour every week. No shame in that, and it doesn't have to mean anything more than that.
I get the sense that the writers make it up as they go along--and risk plot loop holes in the process. Am I mistaken, or haven't Mike and Orson dealt with the hit and run thing three times now? Didn't Orson end up jumping out of a second story garage the first time, and Mike sells his silence for drugs the second time? And then all of a sudden it comes up again three weeks ago? And how uncharacteristic is it for uber-rightous Lynette to let her arsonist kids escape without proper punishment? And maybe the writers shold leave the "dead children cover up" plot line behind. I think we've seen it three times now (Youngs, Alfrie Woodard, Dana Delany)
The show is a night-time soap opera. Plain and simple. Funny, dramatic, sad, mysterious, and yes, can be down right stupid sometimes. If you are going to question the viewership of this show, why don't you start with the thousands of people (mostly women) who watch day-time soap operas....for the past 30 years! It's mindless TV, but some people need and enjoy that in their lives. You don't have to agree with it... just don't watch it :)
I agree with D and Mr. H, the show is supposed to display the vastly different lives of a group of friends. No matter what their differences, they still get together for their weekly game of poker. Show me anyone's life and group of friends that doesn't resemble this (obviously not to the same degree).
Also, I have a theory as to why Mike is no longer with Susan, and I've been thinking this since Susan found out she was pregnant. This is not a spoiler by any means, just my predictions... I think the baby isn't actually Mike's, but it is that British guy's who Susan was with right before Mike.
So, Joanna, you hate the show that much...yet, you sat down and gave it so much thought that you wrote out a 365-word diatribe about why the show is not your cup of tea. There are many shows on TV I don't like... however, unlike you...I just won't watch them, I won't complain about them and I will let others enjoy them. Perhaps you need to find a hopbby. Me, I love the show and thought Sunday's episode was a classic example of how great wrtiting, creative storylines and fresh thinking can reinvigorate a program.
Everyone needs a little mindless entertainment once in a while. I prefer this over reality tv (although I also did watch Rock of Love!)I do think the show is getting predictable. At the beginning of this season I knew Dylan wasn't Katherines "real" daughter when the girl couldn't remember anything about her childhood and as for the whole fast forward 5 years thing - I think we all knew Lynette's kids would be in trouble with the law!
Um....Eric......Its Joanna's job to watch shows like this......
Not all of us enjoy all aspects of our jobs, but we still have to do it.
I totally agree - at one time the directors did a fine job of blending the serious with the funny - but not now. It just seems disjointed. The only reason I stuck with the show was that Marcia Cross did a brilliant job walking that fine line between tragedy and comedy. But the writers and directors have gone way off course this year . I stopped watching about three episodes ago.
Actually,
I think I figured it out. They showed what would have happened to Gabby and Carlos if they didnt get the money from the drug dealer.
They showed would have happened to Linette and Tom's family if Kayla would have stayed with them, she would have turned the other kids into criminals.
I'm pretty sure that Brie would have opened a succesful catering business if the ceremony wasn't ruined because the "freinds" of the happy couple loved what she did. I think if Orson turned himself in, Mike would have not pressed charges and he may have gotten a year in jail and stayed with his wife.
I'm not to sure about Dylan (as that spelled right?), I think she would have ran off to some far away place go get away from her dad (if he didnt get killed). She called her mother after years of hiding to tell her the news of the engagement. She
I'm having a little trouble with Susan, but I think if she didn't have the baby, her and Mike would have broken up and she would have met or married someone else.
I would bet anything that they will start the show with a "what could have happened if one little thing was different or certain people didn't come into thier lives whan they did"
Not bad eh? It's the only explanation that makes sense and will not piss off the viewers. Let me know what you think.
I always enjoyed watching DH just because it's a cheesy soap opera
Week after week and season after season this is exactly what I get.
HollywoodDB!
I think you got that right!!! I bet the beginning of next season will be just like that.... what would have happened if....
I think the writer should take into consideration that each family has its own issues, and its TV! We're supposed to get lost in its drama and ridiculous antics.
Take the show a tad lighter, its meant to be entertainment and they do a damn good job at it.
There's more ...... If you noticed, Andrew was the coordinator for Brie's business, which I believe would have catered solely to gay couples weddings based off the one that she did. Seeing that Andrew is openly gay, he would be a perfect person to run the business.
I am going to watch the ending again tonight and figure everything else out. I wasn't really paying attention as I don't watch the show like the loyal fans do.
I watch the show now because the wife loves it and it gives us something in common. We've moved further apart over the years, and though I resisted watching this program for two years(behaviors drove me bonkers), It's worked out good for us. I doesn't hurt that two of my favorite actors, Dana Delany, and Kyle McLaughlin showed up this season. If not for Orson, Bree would single handedly drive me from watching the show.
Wish my wife would enjoy 'lost' as much as me, but I'm sure she'd like me to watch her john and kate plus 8, I'd rather have a root canal, and she feels the same way about lost.
Why do people watch those "reality" show BS? DH is real entertainment, created with people with a brain and with an outstanding ensemble.
Because it is a good tv show!!
If you hate on DH don't bitch about on their review site alright First of all I liked the season finale and this season is getting close to 1st Season goodness its just this year,3rd season it seems they toned down,I like the 1,2 season where every episode was so juicy, crazy you just wanted more it wasnt enough murder, mystery and cover-ups this season,Granted the 3rd Season was their worst the 4th Season got them back on track and they're going to hav a killer 5th season
Some people are really angry over the 5 year thing you have to realize one Marc Cherry wants to reset the show to the 1st Season mystery, craziness, also that most of this new season will take place in a flashback meaning they'll show you what their lives are after the 5 years but most of the season will be spent explaining what happened to get them there,so look forward to more of Mary Alice's vioce overs and more juice this new season!!!!!!!!!
