'Idol:' Jingle Jangle

Posted by Joanna Weiss May 6, 2008 09:06 PM

All right, Jason Castro lovers, devotees of the dreds and the glazed-over gaze. Look me in the eye -- in an Internet sense -- and tell me you're not just a wee bit ashamed that he's lasted this long. Last year, everyone predicted the apocalypse because Sanjaya survived a few weeks. And while Jason is more talented than Sanjaya -- he can carry a tune, most of the time, and he doesn't look like a kid at a fifth-grade talent show -- he also quite clearly doesn't belong. Does Jason suffer because he's truly a diamond in the rough, without the stage experience of his competitors? Or because he absolutely doesn't care? I'm voting a combination of the two, but it isn't fun to watch.

In fact, there was nothing especially fun about watching the final four perform songs from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "500 Songs That Shaped Rock 'n Roll" Maybe that's too crotchety and unfair. But I've been waiting for someone to put forth a truly transcendent, give-me-goosebumps performance, and tonight, once again, it didn't happen. In fact, to me, the most interesting performance of the night came from Paula, who has returned from her time travels and seemed more fervent than usual about making the contestants feel good about themselves. Maybe because there was, otherwise, so little to gush about. Instead, we got...

David Cook. You've got to admit, the stylists have done a beautiful job on this guy. It's hard to even remember the early comb-over. He's got confidence, too, which I know some interpret as arrogance, but which I find refreshing on a season when so many contestants have sobbed or whined or looked deathly afraid. I agree with the judges that his "Hungry Like the Wolf" was nothing special. I was much happier when I saw that he was going to attempt "Baba O'Riley." And once he took off into the upper register, it was very good. Just not quite goosebump good. And was it me, or did the end seem sort of weirdly cut off?

Syesha. Ever since Andrew Lloyd Webber week, she's been getting her groove on, and I was happy to see her throw herself into another performance -- particularly her energetic version of "Proud Mary." And yet. There's something about Syesha's voice, skilled as it is, that just doesn't thrill me. It's like I'm craving a Fantasia moment that I'm never going to get. And I did have an issue with her taped intro to "A Change is Gonna Come," in which she explained that the song was released during the Civil Rights era, "a pivotal time in history," and now she was singing it at "a pivotal time in my life," because, you know, she's now in the American Idol top four. Syesha. I know it's easy to get caught up in the swirl of this stuff, but not everything is about you.

Jason. I don't think I've ever seen this before: Simon and Randy actually getting mad at a contestant because he was so bad. Even Ryan couldn't help but comment on it. And as I mentioned above, I was kind of irritated, too. In addition to feeling like I wanted to pull out my hair, and much of his, I came up with a couple of questions: Why did he need to hold a guitar during "I Shot the Sheriff"? And of all of the lyrics to forget, "Jingle jangle morning"? Really? Imagine the last couple of weeks with Michael Johns or Carly Smithson in Jason's place, and join me in shedding a small tear of regret.

David Archuleta. Watching him this week, I finally realized what he reminds me of: Young Michael Jackson -- bear with me here -- in "The Jacksons: An American Dream," that Jackson 5 movie that used to play in a continuous loop on MTV. I'm not saying that Young David has the natural talent of Young Michael -- he's good, but no one's that good. But there's that same palpable sense of melancholy, of childhood lost to performance. And the fact that, no matter how well he sings, when he gets praise from the judges, he always looks relieved that no one's going to hit him with a stick. I liked his "Stand By Me" better than his "Love Me Tender," I think. He's a shoo-in for the finals. But I really wish he could just go to his prom.

  1. Syesha's vain and immature comparison to her american idol experience and the civil rights movement was the absolute worst comment ever made on any idol season.

  1. Just a moronic commentry all around. Talk about not everything being about YOU. This drivel was written solely to appear funny and witty as opposed to providing an honest analysis of the performances. Of course, every off-hand remark in it has been said before. Nothing original or funny whatsoever. Pathetic, and, frankly, plain stupid.

  1. I think you are all being too hard on the poor girl, how can we say that this experience is not pivotal in her life. She is not saying that American Idol is pivotal, she is saying that it is an important, memorable, life-changing experience in HER life.

  1. Oh man, if Castro makes it through this week, the show has officially lost all credibility. Not only did he absolutely butcher Bob Marley, but he forgot the words to a Dylan classic. Syesha was better, but she way oversang "Change is gonna come" and little golden boy, while singing very well, couldn't resist, for the umpteenth week in a row, more slow songs. Can someone please remind him, his Dad or whoever makes the little robot's song choices, that there is uptempo music in the world and it's actually quite popular. David C has been my choice from the beginning, his "Baba O'Riley" clearly shined over ??? a Duran Duran song ???. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he gets voted out this week. I voted for him, but I've got a bad feeling that it'll be no match for all of the teenie-bopper text votes that keep the dred-head here every week.

  1. My head, it hangs low tonight. While I love Jason and his bongy dreds, he must go home now. It's not so much that he's out of his league, he just doesn't seem to understand that he's actually kind of in the bigs now. Dude! I forgot the lyrics! Someone's going to pick him up and make him a big star, I think. He's just not the next American Idol. Archie's Love Me Tender was good but that kid's creepy. Syesha did a great job but I still don't care. She should have let out a Yes We Can for Obama and given us an actual moment tonight. Cook won it for me.

  1. I guess Joe Johnson #2 likes Jason Castro.

  1. I agree with the article.......but a few extra comments:
Sayesha: the 'civil rights" comment bothered me too - I am not really sure why.......maybe awkward place to say it?
David C: maybe because I grew up with Duran Duran and The Who to see him do it seemed a bit kareoke for me, but this guy gives his all every week, it just was not a great week, I hope he makes it.
Jason: where, where to begin...........he does have some talent, he just seems like he would rather be in a college dorm room playing the bongo drums and perhaps a challenging game of quarters (do kids still play that, I don't even know), maybe watching Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure for the 100th time and drinking everytime one of them says, "Dude."
The only thing I can say: they were much easier on Brooke when she forgot the lyrics (twice) I think she was called, "brave."

David A: A church choir is calling him somewhere and I find comfort in the fact that after his two ballards Brooke was home somewhere weeping.

    Oh the drama!!!

  1. Last night I honestly think Syesha gave by far the 2 best performances.
Her "Proud Mary" had the most spark and the most energy while still having a great vocal. And she tackled "A Change Gonna Come" one of the biggest most emotional songs you can take on and did a great job with it. She didnt make one mis-step the entire song. Is she the next Whitney no, is she as good of a singer as there is in this final 4? yes without question. David Cook , who I do like.... wasnt on point.."Hungry Like The Wolf"? Bad choice..mediocre performance. and "Baba O'Reily didnt hit the highs he wanted it to..David A...yawn..could he be more boring, lack more emotion, be a more wooden performer, or be more schmaltzy?..and his"Love Me Tender" in no way hit any higher points the Syeshas "Change.."
Jason...well...he should smoke another and enjoy going on the Idols tour..he was a mess

  1. Castros performance was just incredible. The judges dont know talent when they see it. My prediction- Jason stays, Syesha goes

Posted by mickeyc May 7, 08 05:53 AM
  1. Horrendous. The whole night.

David Cook was the most disappointing. Very poor song choices. "Hungry Like the Wolf?" WTF?? Terrible song with a performance to match. "Baba O'Reilly" - Great song but the intro to that is longer than the amount of time they are given to sing. It had to be edited down WAY too much. Dropping the power chords did not help.

Jason Castro was the worst by far. This was his chance to shine and he blew it completely. Of all the lyrics to blow. Dylan wrote so many lyrics that I could understand blowing a verse line in a more obscure song. But "jingle jangle morning?" JINGLE FREAKIN' JANGLE MORNING, Jason! JESUS!!! I wanted to slap him.

Syesha was better by comparison. Still, horrible.

Simon Cowell said that Archuleta won the evening hands down and he was right. That's how low the bar was set this week. ROCK AND ROLL Hall of Fame week. David Archuleta. What's wrong with this picture?

I said in a previous post that AI did not know how to do rock and roll. I wasn't expecting them to go out of their way to prove my point. They should ALL be voted off this week.

Posted by Bob May 7, 08 06:22 AM
  1. Can I start with this: Duran Duran is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Really?

Syesha is very talented and surely Broadway is waiting for her to be done with this pop idol stuff for ther to star in the revival of Ragtime but she is missing something. Even her best performances are just really good immitations of the original. She couldn't do anything different with Proud Mary? Tina Light.

David A. made the comment that he wanted to sing Love Me Tender because he hadn't done a really romantic song yet. What? Isn't that what you do on every song dude? Two weeks ago you sang Think Of Me during ALW week; what do you think that songs about? His voice is incredible but he sounds similar every performance: still he could sing the phone book and make the finals.

David Cook: Is he pacing himself? The cover of The Who song was clearly stronger but haven't we come to expect more from him?

Jason, Jason, Jason. I truly feel that this kid would gladly give up his spot to Michael Johns if that were an option. Is there any chance he intentionally forgot the lyrics in order to get voted off?

  1. While it is supposed to be about the voice, everyone seems to be fixated on the personality. There were three singers in the show last night, and one personailty. Personailty is going home. While it's true the Sy has FINALLY come out of her shell, she's not going to survive next week because she just does not have the range nor depth, and it will be the Davids Show, and it's going to be a toss up .. I don't think AI is going to lose either way- both Davids have "star" written all over them. even though only one actually has to shave everyday. Personally, David A is my pick (and has been since day 1), but I also think it's basically a choice over which side of the same coin you prefer.

Posted by Frank May 7, 08 07:09 AM
  1. "And was it me, or did the end seem sort of weirdly cut off?"

No it wasn't just you, and when he said the song he chose I was both thrilled and nervous about how on Earth they were going to arrange that. I mean, a huge part of Baba O'Riley is the intro and the violin solo at the end. I did love his vocal though. What worked well was that he kept the tempo down just a bit.

And I am officially on the Syesha bandwagon. I thought she chose well, and performed really well. She really seems to want this, as does David Cook. Jason as noted is just embarrassing and he knows it, and your comment about David A made me LOL It's like he doing this to please someone--it's not coming from a hunger to win. I hope it's a David Cook and Syesha final.

  1. Thankfully the dreadful Brooke is finally gone and the appalling dreadlocked Jason will get his cut tonight. I thought he found Paula’s stash.

While Syesha has a good if not spectacular voice and her personality is finally shining through, she is still mimicking the 'Divas" and is not attempting to make a song her own.

David A is scary and boring, but has a tremendous vocal and I’m sure is popular with the “Tweens”. He knows he is a balladeer and I doubt he’ll ever give us anything with real energy, but his voice is very distinctive and will be easily recognizable on the car radio.

David C is a breath of fresh air.

Where is Randy getting his material? Where can I get whatever Paula is taking … or did Jason get it all? Go Simon … speaker of the TRUTH!

Posted by AvaZ May 7, 08 07:27 AM
  1. I think you're right FinnFann, Jason doesn't feel right being there anymore and he purposely threw in the towel with his performance last night. He looked almost relieved when all 3 judges tore him a new one.

Posted by Tommy May 7, 08 07:37 AM
  1. David Cook needs to win this thing. He's got the chops and has shown his versatility. Archuleta, while gifted with a supreme voice sounds like he is havng vocal chord issues still and should he win will probably injure himself further. Rest it for a few years, and then go after the dream when he's well. I'm shocked Syesha is still there because while she is gorgeous, and has a good voice there's just nothing interesting and special about it. If you heard her voice recorded you would not know who she is. Her aligning herself with the Civil Rights movement seemed like a ploy to attract more votes much like Christy Lee's "USA" song later in her game. Jason has said in interviews that he's ready to go home but I have to say he is talented, and hilarious in his "whatever" approach to this competition. That actually shows his persona is an accurate depiction not a put-on for the show.
Michael Johns should have been in the top 3 and I would have loved to see him do a Tom Jones songs. He is a sexy beast even though I am old enough to be his mother.

Posted by LL May 7, 08 07:39 AM
  1. For me, the most interesting moment in the show came when Jason was performing Mr. Tambourine Man and the camera closed in on Carly Smithson in the audience standing up watching the perforamnc and you just knew she had to be wondering how she got voted off while Jason remained. Sadly, the truth is that talent takes a back seat to looks when tween girls are armed with cell phones. Simon was spot on; " Jason, pack your bags."
Syesha has an annoying habit of going from 0 to 60 in 3 seconds. She takes a soft song, starts quietly and then lunges into her belt out diva voice. Still needs to learn control. Didn't mind her reference to Civil Rights since she was explaining her connection to the song...then she went and made an analogy to American Idol and blew the credibility.
David Cook's first choice was such a disappointment. Hungry Like the Wolf was great because it was a full blown band sound and not a solo so bad choice and to quote Simon "forgettable." Baba O'Riley was better but every part of that song is so amazing that to narrow it down to just the first first verse and then repeat the "teenage wasteland" chorus over and over didn't cut it. In my opinion the voice was there but not the performance.
David A; I have to close my eyes to listen to him. His voice is pure, no taking it away from him. He's a teen idol in the making but can't see him as the American Idol. In the end still have to go with Cook.

    Posted by S Coleman May 7, 08 07:55 AM
  1. JOANNA, right on! Right on! Right on! I also was left hanging at the end of Baba O'Riley and thinking, "Isn't there another verse, or two?" It's a fairly short song to begin with, but he ended it just when it was getting good.

Prediction: JASON Castro will fall before his Uncle Fidel. Bye-bye dreds.

If I had the fortitude to watch the show again, I would count how many times SYESHA referred to herself. But I have none. Wondering if she's a bit shallow and that's the THING that's annoying.

ARCHIE clearly put in the best performance, technically anyways, of the four. He'll come out on top and that will probably work better for Cook in the short term.

Posted by jaybah May 7, 08 08:07 AM
  1. The first song Jason Castro sang was fantastic. He made it his own. No one criticized David Archuleta for taking Elvis's song and making it his own.

Posted by David May 7, 08 08:13 AM
  1. Joanne -

You are right on the money again.

Syesha has the voice but NO SOUL even with the crying bit. NO GOOSEBUMPS just a loud voice.

David A. - Stand by me was excellent, Love me tender was horrofic.

David C. - Baba was that like 10 minutes too short. Totally weird.

Jason Castro - Believe or not, I liked Mr. Tambourine Man even with the goofed up lyrics.

    Send Jason and Syesha home.

Give David A. to the teeny weenies and just hope that David Cook gets his groove back.

  1. Ahhhh, yet another night of idol drama.

Syesha: please go listen to a speech on civil rights before rushing to throw in your two cents. In my opinion, inappropriate for a singing competition. Song-wise, I thought she did very well.

David Cook: rocks the sh*t week-in and week-out! David's confidence in himself is what I think makes him so credible as an up-and-coming rock star! I said it before, I'll say it again- I actually hope he gets tossed soon so he can tend to his music career. This guy is FAR more concerned with making music than winning a singing competition, I can tell you that guaranteed.

David Archuleta: who is responsible for the mental thrashing he takes night after night? Come on. He still sounds like wheezing cousin Eddie, that will never change for me. But he looks so tense when getting critiqued, like he just doesn't get it. It's a singing competition, and it's okay to be told you suck. How else is he supposed to learn anything? IMO, I don't think anybody does him any favors or any good by telling him he had "the best performance of the night.... he blew the competition away, etc". This kid has all the makings of a self-mutilating person if his dad's pressure-cooker isn't careful. I used to joke about how Archie sucks, but now it seems like people really think he's better than he is. Does anybody else actually hear the wheezing in his throat? Cough out the frog already! On top of that, he's a poster boy for what happens when your parent(s) live vicariously through your (talent) and throw amazing amounts of pressure on you to succeed. Too bad, too. This guy will probably win this thing, then slowly fade away...

Castro: high as a kite. I know, I've been there. Anybody else notice his eyes dilated and bloodshot? Typcial stoner, NOTHING wrong with that though. He can't wait to get off the show- he is perfectly happy singing in coffee lounges, which he openly admitted.

Tonight's elimination: Castro (unless the show is going for ratings, in which Syesha is gone- but if you look at the last few contests, it usually comes down to a male and female, not talent... imagine that)

Posted by wheezingcousineddie May 7, 08 08:16 AM
  1. Post secondary comment -

I'm glad it's notjjust my thought but with Syesha it's all about her. And always about her like I said last week she needs to go into ACTING not singing.

Posted by Marcus Ben Karkis May 7, 08 08:27 AM
  1. Michael Johns would have been awesome this week.

Posted by Where's The Magic May 7, 08 08:40 AM
  1. I just have to say that I think it's horrible how the producers decide who they like and give them the most time on air. Syesha was given such an advantage over everyone last night with all that banter and the crying and everything. I'm not a Castro fan, but they really gave him the shaft last night. They are trying to get rid of him harder than he's trying to go home. At least time it out as best you can to give them all equal air time. That's just completely biased. They don't give David A. as much time because he's a shoe-in, but Cook and Syesha got a lot and Jason got none.

Posted by Ginny May 7, 08 08:46 AM
  1. I think all of you need to get a life! Seriously! How would you feel if you were on national television on American Idol. I'd be freakin cryin too! She wasn't putting down the Civil Rights Movement or even trying to compare her experience with that "pivotal" time in history. All the girl was trying to say is that the song had much meaning behind it and combined with her experience it made her cry. I don't understand why everyone feels the need to misinterpret everything they say.

Posted by Mad May 7, 08 08:54 AM
  1. Carly and Michael Johns were on Ellen. I missed it but you can see them here and wonder what could have been if Jason and Brooke had gone home first.

  1. To the person who said "Baba O'Riley" was a short song: 5:15 is not short.

And there are many successful "wheezing" singers. Babs, anyone? (Why do always end up defending Archie? I'm not a fan. It just seems he is unfairly criticized.) There are gates and limiters and filters that CAN remove that sound, if they want.

Posted by Bob May 7, 08 09:06 AM
  1. I was watching the HD version of Idol on Comcast cable last night - did anyone else notice that in David Cook and David Castro's first performances there were MAJOR audio balance leveling problems, where it sounded like the band's mics weren't working properly, and all we heard was naked vocals, left to kind of scarily hang loudly over some weak background? I almost thought they were going to give Syesha and Archuleta the same messed up treatment just to level the playing field. Then again, is this just my sensitive ear?

Is there another one out there?

  1. Jason is a joke...Right? We're being punked...No? Hey, Mr. Mites in the Dreads Head, butcher a tune for me...He's killing me quickly with his songs.

Posted by jkstraw May 7, 08 09:47 AM
  1. Caroline,

I noticed the bad mix, too. I believe it was intentional, adding to my belief that AI has no business even attempting rock and roll.

Posted by Bob May 7, 08 09:51 AM
  1. Caroline - you are right. There were audio problems in the beginning of the show....for Cook and Castro.

Posted by shelly May 7, 08 10:08 AM
  1. Ok, I think the problem with Jason is that he just wants to go home and back to his life. He knows he's not good enough to be there anymore so why prolong it.

David C did a great job singing "Baba O'Riley", and you’re right, it did sound cut off, because it was. It's not the type of song that should be shortened.

David A and Syesha were great. They picked good songs and did well with them. And no, it's not all about Syesha, but this is a big moment in her life right now. Leave the poor girl alone.

Posted by Monica May 7, 08 10:08 AM
  1. Do you think the judges know any arrangement to "I Shot the Sheriff" beside the Eric Clapton mess? Because Castro's arrangement was pretty damn close to Marley's...

They keep telling everyone to "Be YOU!" and when Castro does the singer-songwriter thing, he gets crucified. I do wish he had done some good old fashioned Jackson Browne (ala "Take It Easy," perhaps?) but he was not as god-awful as Syesha or -- gulp -- the Davids. His versions didn't make me cringe and I'm sorry but what was with Syesha's "Rolling on a River" or David's "Love Me Tender"? I feel like if you're covering a song, someone who loves the original should still be able to recognize the song, even if it's only lyrically.

Posted by Ashley May 7, 08 10:45 AM
  1. Methinks Randy is feeling some man-love for Archie. Week after week Randy's drooling after each of David A's monotonous performances and praising them as "Dat was da BOMB!!!" "We got a hot one in the house tonight!"

For the last few weeks, even when Archie sucks, Randy is on him like a dog in heat. It's getting uncomfortable seeing this every week. This season has gone from the (potentially) best, to easily the worst ever......

Posted by Suzibean May 7, 08 11:24 AM
  1. Good for you, Ashley! Jackson Browne would be perfect for Jason. If he could remember the lyrics. He'd probably flub "flat-bed Ford!" I can hear it now: "it's a girl my lord in duh duh duh duh duh duh look at me." (I know that line belongs to Frey.) Maybe it's just alliteration he has trouble with. The herb can do that to a guy.

Posted by Bob May 7, 08 12:07 PM
  1. Amen, Suzibean for your comments. Let's all hope Randy's red rocket doesn't make it's way into the $#&!*@@ of little davey archuleta.

Bob, get a clue, man. Please try not to defend Archie if you really don't mean to. "There are many successful wheezing singers"? Was that supposed to be taken seriously??

All I'm saying is that David Archuleta is on a very dangerous roller coaster ride, being dragged through the mud by his papi and he's at a very impressionable time in his life. The other point I wanted to make is that David Archuleta, in my and others' opinions, is not nearly as good as a lot of folks claim him to be. He's good if you like choir music, and if you like Josh Grobin.

The reason for idol is to grant the winner a record deal. If David A. starts singing songs on the radio, somebody put me out of my misery...

Posted by WHEEZINGcousineddie May 7, 08 12:10 PM
  1. I think that last week and last night's american Idol "judges" may have just sent
me away from watching A.I. next year.
Simon has turned from "Critiquing" to vicious slamming of the contestants.
Paula is bobble-head that has yet to say anything coherent. Jason had to be rattled by last weeks Paula bomb. Don't be so had on him for forgetting the words...Paula heard them at rehearsal anyway. (Or was that David Cook she heard! Who knows where those voices are from!)
Randy has lost his beloved Carly and has is now in love with baby-David who might be a star when he grows up and dumps Daddy.
I am ready for something fresh, (including some judges), no more has-been mentors, and more up-to-date music choices!

This year's most talented singer is David Cook, hands down!

Posted by Martha Kuder May 7, 08 12:12 PM
  1. Archuletta stole the night...but, that isn't necessarily saying a lot. And, Joanna, you're right about the stick thing. You get the feeling if Ryan snuck up on him and said "BOO!" poor little David would jump right into Paula's lap...or Simon's...or somebody's in the front row.

David Cook, who I like a lot, is lucky Jason is there...Duran Duran? The Who was a better second choice, but...you can't do BABA O'RILEY justice in under two minutes. It's almost like Michael Johns' version of the Beatles A DAY IN THE LIFE...great songs...not meant to be chopped down to one minute and fifty seconds, or whatever they give them. I'm sure the full, studio I-Tunes recording is wonderful...but that was a mess.

As for Jason, hopefully he is gone tonight. He really does seem like he wants to leave now. His stoner friends are probably busting his chops about still being on AI, and he's losing street cred with them.

Syesha was terrific, but...get over yourself, girl. Civil Rights Movement. Syesha in the Top Four on American Idol. Yeah, I see the parallels...

    Good grief!

    Bye Jason...

Posted by Matt Talvi May 7, 08 12:54 PM
  1. Most of your are such haters! Syesha was awesome and David Archuleta has the strongest voice. He definitely sang with emotion. David C was good the second time. His first song was just boring. Jason Castro needs to go home because he is a fish out of water.

Posted by Lilly May 7, 08 05:19 PM
  1. We should all remember that these singers are just kids. They are not professionals. I give them all credit for coming this far. I am sure that they are all very nervous when they perform. My choice is David A. I thought his version of Love me Tender was great.
