Emmy Semifinalists Announced

The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has officially released a list of the 10 comedies and 10 dramas that are this year's semifinalists. And, well, of course I'm annoyed! Two of my very favorite series aren't on the list. No sign of "How I Met Your Mother" among the comedies, and "In Treatment" is missing among the dramas.

Here are the names:

TOP 10 COMEDY SERIES FINALISTS
"Curb Your Enthusiasm"
"Entourage"
"Family Guy"
"Flight of the Conchords"
"The Office"
"Pushing Daisies"
"30 Rock"
"Two and a Half Men"
"Ugly Betty"
"Weeds"

TOP 10 DRAMA SERIES FINALISTS
"Boston Legal"
"Damages"
"Dexter"
"Friday Night Lights"
"Grey’s Anatomy"
"House"
"Lost"
"Mad Men"
"The Tudors"
"The Wire"

COMEDY: I just don't understand how anyone can think "Two and a Half Men" is in any way better than "How I Met Your Mother," not to mention the similarly snubbed "The New Adventures of Old Christine." It's as if the Charlie Sheen show gets an automatic nod every year because it's highly rated, not because it's particularly well-written or original.

Yes, I am pouting.

The good news, though, is that the Academy has seen fit to put "Flight of the Conchords" and "Pushing Daisies" on the list. Both are unique accomplishments.

My comedy-finalist choices, based on the semifinalists: "The Office," "30 Rock," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Flight of the Conchords," Pushing Daisies."

DRAMA: So glad to see "The Wire," of course, and "Friday Night Lights" and "Dexter." But "Boston Legal"? "Grey's Anatomy"? Really? REALLY? "In Treatment" deserves one of those slots for sure. The HBO series was monumental drama. Let's see whether any of the "In Treatment" actors are acknowledged in the coming weeks. That would mitigate some of the Emmy shame. At least the voters had the sense to leave "Heroes" out of the running.

My drama-finalist choices, based on the semifinalists: "Lost," "Dexter," "Mad Men," "Friday Night Lights," "The Wire."

The five finalists in all the categories will be announced on July 17.

  1. "In Treatment" better get some actor noms! Mia Wasikowska for sure!

  1. On the whole, I love How I Met Your Mother, but this season, especially the post-strike episodes, the show was just not up to par with previous seasons. They even rolled out Robin Sparkles again, but in a weaker storyline. Two and a Half Men is more consistent than How I Met Your Mother, but I think both shows have already peaked.

On the other hand, I am thrilled to see Family Guy get some consideration. It's not a show for everyone, but it is fresh, incredibly witty (and crass. . . and crude. . .and base. . . ) and very well done.

  1. I really hope Flight of the Conchords makes it to the top 5, just to see what Bret would wear to the Emmys...

  1. What is the draw with Boston Legal? Sometimes it's entertaining, but I definitely wouldn't think it's on the same level as some of the other shows on the list (Friday Night Lights) and off the list (In Treatment). But, the Academy loves Boston Legal and loves James Spader and loves William Shatner... At least give Candice something!

And Grey's Anatomy has been on a downward spiral since Season 1 ended.

  1. Two and a Half Men and Boston Legal are two of the best written shows ever on TV. Your taste is the WORST.

  1. Battlestar Galactica, anyone?

  1. I watch Grey's Anatomy every week and am disappointed that it was nominated. And Two and a Half Men?!? Really? That show is awful.

  1. CBS Sitcoms are horrible.. they can't touch The Office and 30 Rock.

  1. If you don't think that Boston Legal isn't one of the best shows of all time, then you just don't have a clue. They tackle issues that none of those other shows even has heard of while at the same time keeping a light and sensitive approach. Their beautiful handling of Alsheimer's desease and Asperger's desease has never been duplicated on TV.

Try watching it again....you've definately missed a great show.

  1. I think the Simpsons is taken for granted, it is better than Family Guy (although I admit I saw 2 episodes that I nearly fell off the couch) because it is more consistent. House continues to entertain, and the second to last and last episodes were phenomenal. Boston Legal is good, but it truly does not compare to its predecessors The Practice, Law and Order and especially LA Law. Grey's Anatomy does not even come close to ER, which probably should be nominated every year.

  1. The New Adventures of Old Christine is consistently funny - never hit or miss. A great ensemble cast, clever, witty dialogue - never stoops to the lowbrow stuff that passes for humor in Two and a Half Men (which, by the way, started out on a high note).

  1. Yeah, "Battlestar" absolutely gets shafted by the Emmy awards. Then again, I could be biased, as it's the *only* show I watch. I've never seen a single episode of anything else on the list.

  1. I love Boston Legal, it's a great show, great acting and superb writing.

I can't stand the Office, I don't laugh at all when I watch it. I sit there trying to understand why it's so funny to people, but it doesn't do it for me.

I agree with Grey's Anatomy going downhill as well, just awful.

  1. Grey's Anatomy has been going downhill for a very long time. Doesn't even deserve a nomination. Finally, Friday Night Lights gets recognition! That show deserves to win. Very grumpy that The Big Bang Theory wasn't nominated. The show is hilarious!

  1. Where is IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by MARK July 7, 08 12:09 PM
  1. Why is not sunny in Philadelphia? Desperate Housewives makes the list with Family Guy? Family Guy is past its prime and jumped the shark in the episode where Stewie killed Lois and it turned out to be a dream.

    Snubs- Ian McShane (Deadwood) SWENJEN!
Michael C. Hall (Dexter) actor in a dramatic series
Charlie Day ( Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia) actor in a comedic series
    The Wire (dramatic series)
    It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Biggest Disappointment: Desperate Housewives getting the nod despite ratings
