'SYTYCD:' Tonight's observations

1) Nigel Lythgoe thinks a lot about sex. And then he talks about it. And it's a little bit creepy. If I were Chelsie, I would have gotten the heebies when he went on and on about my leg.

2) Comfort and Thayne have got to be on the chopping block on Thursday. They've barely skated by so far, and just don't have a lot of chemistry. I mean, even I felt it. Which makes me feel bad, because they actually look like nice people - just people who shouldn't be dancing a romantic pas de deux. Ever. At least not with each other.

3) Courtney and Gev, on the other hand, are getting better and better, digging into their routines and to each other. I promised last week that I'd watch generously, and I'm glad I did, because they rose to the top tier tonight.

4) When Mary Murphy isn't yelling, she's remarkably coherent. She nailed the issues with Will and Jessica and with Comfort and Thayne, adding the necessary details to my own fuzzy sense of dissatisfaction. "It made me want to go, 'ahhh-eeehh-ooh,' and I didn't," she said at one point, and I was so relieved. I wish she hated things more often.

5) Man, Will is good. I don't always notice him from week to week because his partnership with Jessica is so uneven. (Yeah, that's what the judges said, too. But they were right. And they were also right about that cool contemporary routine, which made both of them look like bundles of muscle.) And I don't particularly care whether they nailed the quickstep, though I'll take the judges' word on that one.

6) I'm also loving Joshua, who may be too big and thunky for the Viennese waltz, but who bounced the daylights out of that Bollywood routine. Who knew Bollywood could be so much fun? Everyone in India, I guess.

  1. I agree about Thayne and Comfort. Comfort is so good, but she does not seem to be improving week by week. She seems a little bit frustrated by it all. You also can't blame Thayne for smiling all the time, he just loves dancing and you can see it in his moves. So of course he wants to smile. Mia said last night that she looks forward to working with him, so is that a sign of things to come?

  1. Nigel does seem more obsessed with bodies this year and although it seems creepy to the outside world, from my recollection it's pretty common in dance. I was so happy to see a bollywood routine. I had been watching some of the Australian version of SYTYCD on YouTube and they had a bollywood routine as well as some very cool group pieces- worth checking out. The choreography was great and dancers to me looked better trained than in the US. Now if they could just get rid of the quickstep - nobody wants to dance it and nobody wants to watch it. I agree about Will - he's the one to beat. Once he gets away from Jessica next week he will really shine.

  1. Nigel's constant lather over the female form seems like a subtle way of screaming "SEE? THERE ARE HETEROSEXUAL MALES IN THE DANCE WORLD!!" It's unnecessary and creepy, but I still find him more tolerable than Mary.

Will is perfection, and the Bollywood routine rocked. Joshua and Katie are always a delight to watch.

Anyone else think Mia Michaels has a mean streak a mile wide?

  1. I agree Nigel is freaking me out and is extremely inappropriate! If I were these girls parents I would say something to him. I thought he was inappropriate with a lot of comments last night...the one inadvertently about the War and speaking about the Bible. I have a feeling he'll be doing some apologizing this evening as he did a couple of times last season!

  1. Grrr. I was really curious to see Thayne with other partners. I think that was the problem for him. I hope they ask him to come on tour. He's great!
