Emmy Nominations Announced: '30 Rock' & 'Mad Men' Gone Wild!

There’s plenty of good news in the list of 2008 Emmy nominations, which was announced this morning. (See the list below, after the jump).
Oh, there’s bad news, too, of course -- (cough) seven nominations for “Boston Legal” and “Two and Half Men” (cough), (cough) zero major nominations for “Friday Night Lights” (cough) ??? -- but lets suck on a cough drop and start with the happy stuff first, shall we?
To wit, AMC’s evocative “Mad Men” won a whopping 16 nominations, including best drama, best actor for Jon Hamm, and best supporting actor for John Slattery. The show, about ad men in the early 1960s, has quickly become a Hollywood favorite, and small cheers could be heard in the auditorium this morning as announcers Kristin Chenoweth and Neil Patrick Harris read off the names of “Mad Men” and Jon Hamm. “Mad Men” and Hamm won Golden Globes earlier this year.
Emmy voters also saw fit to give kudos to another first-season basic cable drama, FX’s “Damages,” which has seven nods including best drama, best actress for Glenn Close, and best supporting actor for both Ted Danson and Zeljko Ivanek. While pay cable has been no stranger to all Emmy categories over the years, “Mad Men” and “Damages” are the first two basic-cable shows ever to be nominated for best series.
Voters also decided to overlook the creatively troubled “Grey’s Anatomy” as best drama to make room for Showtime’s “Dexter” and Fox’s “House,” shows that are as compelling as their lead actors, as well as ABC’s resurgent “Lost.” “Grey’s” did walk off with supporting actress nods for Sandra Oh and Chandra Wilson, however, but not, as we all know too well, Katherine Heigl.
The series with the most nominations -- 17 -- is “30 Rock,” which won best comedy last year. The NBC sitcom was given nods for best comedy, best comedy actress for Tina Fey, best comedy actor for Alec Baldwin. Notably absent from the best-comedy category: “Desperate Housewives” and “Ugly Betty.” And while “Ugly Betty” did get notice for performances (by American Ferrara and Vanessa Williams), “Desperate Housewives” did not. That officially counts as a snub, don't you think?
Other treats: Gabriel Byrne got his best-actor due for HBO’s “In Treatment,” crazy-eyed Michael Emerson was given the only “Lost” acting nod, as best supporting drama actor, and Amy Poehler is the first “Saturday Night Live” performer to be nominated for series comedy, for best supporting actress. Also, HBO's “John Adams” was a big name in the miniseries categories. It has a whopping 23 nominations, including, of course, best miniseries, best actor for Paul Giamatti, and best actress for Laura Linney.
But seriously, what is the story with “Boston Legal,” “Two and Half Men,“ and the Emmy voters? I will never understand the obsession. How can those shows win so many kudos while the likes of "In Treatment," "The Wire," "How I Met Your Mother," and "Friday Night Lights" are given such short shrift?

Seriously, there's a category for "Reality Host?!
And looking at the expanded list of nominations at emmys.com, I saw that "The Wire" got a writing nomination. At least they weren't COMPLETELY ignored.
But oddly, "Lost" didn't get either a writing or directing nomination.....
My picks: Lost, 30 Rock, Hall, Sedgewick, Louis-Dreyfuss, Baldwin, Neil Patrick Harris, Emerson, Wiest, Williams, Klum, Amazing Race.
Proof that sleeping around and booze is good for your career:
Spader/Shatner, Shalhoub, Sheen, Piven
Great runners-up: Poehler, Smart, Applegate, Byrne.
Proof of God: No other HIMYM noms.
Imagine the Best Drama category if The Wire had gotten the spot it deserves and Boston Legal was nowhere to be seen?!? I'm seriously flabbergasted that they didn't give The Wire a Best Drama nod in it's last year -- what a crime. Let's hope the 16 nods to Mad Men don't bring on the popularity you wrote about in yesterday's article. I like being one of the few people in my office of 100 that watches the critically acclaimed but poorly watched shows.
Do you actually watch Boston Legal? It tackles difficult issues with both drama and comedy. Do you pay attention when James Spader is in a scene and especially his scenes with William Shatner? The Emmey gets it and gets it right!!!
Thank you Matthew Gilbert for noting that The Wire was snubbed yet again. I'll agree that the Emmy nominators got it right on Mad Men, but they've shown how irrelevant they are by snubbing what is arguably the best series on television. Is that one nomination over all five seasons? Rediculous.
The biggest joke was nominating William Shatner in the 'Supporting Actor -Drama' category (for an acting performance that is comedic and one-note) over Wire stalwarts Andre Royo, Wendell Pierce, Lance Reddick, or Aidan Gillen. I'd even argue that Michael K. Little's portrayal of the gangster Omar or Domenic West as the cop McNulty should be up for best actor.
The Emmys have shown (again!) that they are not paying close enough attention.
Battlestar Galactica was the best show and best acting on television last year. PERIOD.
No nods for 'The Wire'? Abhorrent.
At least they got it right with Mad Men.
Not a fan of Boston Legal and don't know many people who are... Scripts stick to a formula of preachy and contrived plots. Where's the undercurrents and chemistry between the actors? Frankly I get confused with Will Shatner on Boston Legal and the Priceline Negotiator commercials - is he playing the same smug character in the same costume? Ick! Friday Night Lights has at least some sense of authenticity... The Wire... Boston Legal? I'd rather see a show about Legal Sea Foods.
Matthew Gilbert - you're absolutely right about the popularity of Mad Men. Keep the audience small... otherwise it will be dumbed-down for the masses. No more references to Ayn Rand, the musical Fiorello... Imagine if this show was on CBS, ABC or worse NBC part of their MUST SEE TV ad campaign. Not that it ever would be but imagine how different it would have been if it was on Sunday nights on CBS after Survivor.
Thank God for a basic cable channel taking a risk and it's paying off... I don't have to pay through the nose watching a premium cable channel to get good drama.
TV has always appealed to the lowest common denominator (LCD) of the world. That's why Mad Men is fun to watch... Much is said about the out of the office drama. But remember the show is about the men who dreamed up those ad campaigns to manipulate, I mean sell products to the LCD. Maybe the more pressure placed on Matthew Weiner's shoulders, the more commentary we'll get about stupid corporate executives making poor creative choices... Watching Jon Hamm pitch an idea to a rube turned millionaire while playing against the inner-office politics - pure Machiavelli... Wow! I'm amazed at the set and costume design right down to the littlest detail... details that are of my earliest memories.
If Boston Legal / Brothers and Sisters steals the dreck of audience in the Sunday night Nielson ratings - so be it. Weiner's been through this pressure before with his stint on the Sopranos...
Somebody watched enough episodes to nominate "Robot Chicken", yet didn't watch enough to nominate "Friday Night Lights"? Enough, already!
i still don't understand how the emmy's can snub The Wire. it's seriously the best show i've ever watched and i know i'm not alone when i say this, so i don't get how they can keep rewarding shows like "two and a half men" and "boston legal." i'm not saying these are the worst shows ever, but they've already been nominated a lot and won plenty of awards...when there is better stuff out there, why keep nominating them over and over?!?!
i'm encouraged to see Dexter (another great show) and Mad Men get recognized....at least they are starting to realize there is great tv beyond the networks...but to not recognize The Wire in its last season is just WRONG! Yes, yes, they got one writing nom, but unless they win it, that won't be good enough for me.
Matt -- noticed that some of the categories list 5 nominees (lead drama actress, guest actor in a comedy) while others have 6 (lead actor in a drama, guest actress in a comedy)...why is that?
"Pushing Daisies," a delightfully odd show, is definitely one of my favorites, and I am pleased to see young Lee Pace's nomination! I am also please to see Kristen Chenowith's nomination, for the wonderful, slightly loopy waitress at The Pie Hole! (It would have been nice, however, to see Chi McBride nominated.) I can hardly wait until the broadcast!
First thing I said to myself was "What about Friday Night Lights?" I understand The Wire snub because season 5 was a bit ridiculous. I wish Two and Half Men would get canceled.
The fact that 'The Wire' received one nomination further proves the irrelevancy of the Emmys. Yet again, the best show on television gets snubbed.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus is easily the best actress of the bunch, even if her show is not the funniest, I think the rest of her cast is weak. She should have won every year for Elaine, not just once. How did Candace Bergen beat her out for the awful Murphy Brown? It's certainly payback time after JLD lost 5 times. Remember Seinfeld only won once for best comedy, so you have to take the Emmys with a grain of salt. And can somebody please tell me where are the Simpsons?
I'm glad Grey's got nothing, because frankly it doesn't even come close to ER, which is still a great show with nothing to show for it. ER in its prime absolutely blows away Grey's.
I'm glad to see "Flight of the Conchords" get a writing nom... that is a funny, funny show with great music. It should have gotten Best Comedy as well.
"Mad Men" is well deserved, as is the most recent season of "Lost."
What makes the Emmys a joke is the wide disparity between talent in the noms. Former teen heartthrobs are up against industry legends and Academy Award winners. It turns the event into a dog and pony show.
Not a single nod to "Friday Night Lights". Sigh. So unfair. The show seems to be on terribly shakey ground which makes me sad since it's so outstanding.
I was happy to see Sharon Gless recognized in her guest role on "Nip/Tuck". I still have nightmares about her character. Creepy!
"Lost" was robbed of being nominated in the writing and directing
categories but also in the actor in a dramatic series category (Matthew Fox). Sad that "Raisin In The Sun" did not get more acting nominations and a nod for best directing of mini-series/TV movie or dramatic special. However, I am so delighted that "Pushing Daisies" received some Emmy nominations. It is one of the quirkiest TV series to be on TV in a long, long time! And thumbs up to all the nominees in the
individual performance in a variety or music program. Here's hoping
the Emmy win in this category is a 5-way tie!
Writer's strike killed some really good chances for some shows and actors...short seasons, crappy wrap-it-up story lines in the end...there really wasn't too much to actually choose from! Anything with an actual storyline got smashed into half-season time. Heck, "24" didn't even HAVE a season to even try to redeem itself from last year! I am a big TV watcher, and I have never sat through a complete episode of "Two and a Half Men"...its just plain atrocious...I'll be watching "Reaper" (at least its funny). And in any other year, although she is AMAZING, Amy Poehler wouldn't have stood a chance: with Baby Mama and an election in the same year - she's at the popular kid's table. I truly hope she wins.
I am not surpised at all that John Adams won so many nominations. The series was superbly produced, the writing ( though the subject matter was rich in and of itself -- the birth of a nation!! what could be more dramatic) was exceptional and the acting was of such calibur that is rarely seen even on film these days. This series not only restored my love for my country and it's humble but nobel beginnings but it restored respect for this nations leaders. The nobilility of men such as John Adams, George Washington and the sheer political astuteness of Ben Franklin and the elegance and complexity of Thomas Jefferson restored my faith in leaders. When Washington was sworn in, I actually cried! This series was well done, very well done. Congratulations to HBO and everyone involved!
What happened to Burn Notice? Great show and good acting with drama and comedy. Thank God Dexter got in there is the best show going.
I don't think it's a snub to Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, or Grey's Anatomy. Those shows are not even close to the caliber of shows that were nominated. Ugly Betty, were it not for the acting, was quite painful to watch. And, the presumed, "I choose me" storyline? Obviously, not very original (though the only way to get rid of two annoying side characters?) Grey's was mostly really bad (though, not as bad as last year). I admit I haven't watched DH since the horrible second season, and nothing could induce me to watch it, not with all the other great shows around.
I do think that the Lost episode, The Constant, was snubbed (yes, Lost was nominated, but that particular episode didn't get any particular mention in the writing or direction category, just music). I think some of the actresses on Mad Men were overlooked. Weeds might have been insane last year, but it's still one of the best shows on, and wasn't nominated. Why Two and a Half Men? Who watches that? I don't know anyone who does.
Did no one see Donald Sutherland in 'Dirty Sexy Money'? He is one of the best actors around anyway and his character in that show is multi-faceted and very difficult to play and he was excellent. He brought me to tears in every episode.
Ooh, I TOTALLY agree with you on the "HIMYM" snubbing... that is one of the funniest shows on TV today, and at the very least, Neil Patrick Harris got a nod for his supporting role. I detest "Two and a Half Men" - it always shocks me that they are able to get so many popular actors to do guest spots on this show and that it gets recognized at the Emmys year after year after year... Chuck Lorre hasn't done anything worthwhile since "Roseanne"; his latest works are based around tired cliches. The only thing that makes me truly happy about the Emmys is that they are recognizing "30 Rock". And one more semi-complaint: "In Treatment"... YUCK - I only choked down one episode, but it was soooo bad that I couldn't bear to watch it again. BUT... I love Gabriel Byrne so much that I don't care what show got him the Emmy nod!
I will never stop watching "The Wire" DVDs and I can't wait for Season 5 to be available to complete my set...best show ever. Speaking of DVDs I picked up the awesome Mad Men zippo case boxed Season 1 DVD. It feels great to watch Season 1 again without commercials. I will have to get some Don Draper rye whiskey ready to deal with the commercials in Season 2. I want those round drinking glasses!!
Does no one watch Eureka? Yeah it's on the sci-fi channel and is a summer series, but it is smart, funny, and entertaining. I have yet to watch a comedy with the character development this show had in the second season. But since it is not a show that carries with it a "name " it gets no respect.
Screw all the Comedy and Drama nominations! It is all about KATHY GRIFFIN!!!!!!! and no this is not Kathy typing this, but I am her biggest fan! ou go bitch, you deserve both Emmys you are nominated for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want to know why there wasn't a single nomination for Big Love!! I'm thrilled to see the noms for Dexter and Mad Men as well as the noms for Gabriel Byrne and Tony Shaloub.
Unfortunately, I can't bear to watch one second of Kathy Griffin!!! Her show is ridiculous and she is obnoxious. Did Bravo pay for her to get an emmy nom?
What happened with Tudors? I cant believe they didnt get ANY at all! I hope that does not mean the series is doomed!
Why is it that the best show on tv never gets recognized!!
ONE TREE HILL
People think its a teen drama but its much more then that, its a real shame people are so closed minded to the best story that has been told for 5 years now!!
Thank goodness for the success of "Mad Men", Although how Mia Wasikowska as the young gymnast patient of "In Treatment" was left out as well as the sublime January Jones of "Mad Men" is beyond mind-boggling.
But if the Television Academy can continue to honor "Two and a Half Men", which we watched until we were left feeling like we needed a shower after every episode (a magic mix, a child and tons of sexual innuendo!) as well as "Boston Legal", which was brilliant before Spader became the sanest one on this Ally McBeal quirk-fest...while "Friday Night Lights" is ignored, I guess one shouldn't be too surprised.
"The Wire" is the best show ever made and the people making these nominations are idiots. I am boycotting this event because of the stupidity behind the minds of these people.
So glad to see a couple nominations for Breaking Bad. Phenomenal show and Bryan Cranston is superb.
It astounds me that "The Wire" has been so neglected for awards every year. This show is a masterpiece and deserves better.
I never in a million years would have categorized Boston Legal as a drama.
I know it's well after the fact, but I'm watching the latest episode and Dirty Sexy Money, and I thought, "Surely Donald Sutherland was nominated for an Emmy for best supporting actor, drama..." I watched the Emmys, and I remembered the lawyer from Damages won -- well deserved, he was excellent... but how was Donald Sutherland not nominated??? For the briefcase scene alone last season he deserved a nomination. Now I remember why I didn't like the Emmys so much this year....
