'Project Runway:' Leather and Suede

Posted by Joanna Weiss July 24, 2008 10:23 PM

Sorry it's taken so long to get to this week's "Project Runway;" Wednesday nights are suddenly busy, y'all. I first have to say that I'm glad, and wholly unsurprised, that the judges let Leathah-fixated Stella stay last week despite her garbage bag fiasco. Like Natalie Portman, I wasn't so nuts over her asymmetrical cocktail dress. But the woman makes good TV.

As for the winner: I like Suede. I loved Suede's cocktail dress. I'm glad Suede won the challenge. But if Suede is going to spend the entire season referring to himself as Suede -- or, worse, if the producers are going to make him keep referring to himself as Suede because they think it's appealingly quirky -- I might have to boycott the show.

I also like Leanne, who has a nice wry sense of humor that you don't always get from the women on this show. I like her frumpy-chic personal aesthetic. But I thought her dress was disastrous. It looked as if someone had toilet-papered her model with brown satin -- though, in her defense, that fabric didn't help. It irked me that the designers kept ragging on their models for their lack of shopping skills, but on the other hand, oy. Are these women color blind? Or is "green" fabric by definition mostly champagne-colored or brown? If so, sorry to say, we're going to have to keep ravaging the Earth. Bring on the petroleum-based polyester blends!

  1. From what I recall from reading Tim Gunn's blog, the selection of green fabrics at Mood was pretty limited. There is organic dye that the designers could have used, had they more time for this challenge.

Both Suede and Blayne kind of redeemed themselves a little bit from the last episode for me. Blayne still needs to stop the -licious talk. Why Terri's blue dress wasn't in the top three I have no idea. That was my favorite.

I still don't know who most of these designers are, mostly because I'm listening more than watching, except for the parts when Tim checks in on them and the runway.

  1. I actually liked Stella's dress, I thought It should of won. The fit was perfect, and it looked elegant and chic.

  1. I also liked Stella's dress a lot - I thought it was well done, looked chic, but still it had something the other dresses didn't have. Plus I have to admit I like her personality. A bit freaky, laid-back, but very friendly.

I agree regarding Terri's dress - it was one of my favorites and I didn't have any idea why it didn't make it into the top three. For my part, I liked Suede's dress, but it looked a little too "Tutu-like" for me - it was supposed to be a cocktail dress and not a dress for a ballet dancer. I would have prefered Kenley's dress over Suede's.

  1. I would like to know how to get the latest video episode on my computer....I did solast year but for some reason I have not been able to do so this year.
I fell asleep before the show was over so I did not get to see the finished product on the runway. By the way, I am seventy-five years young and watch three grandchildren every day during the summer time so it is not that I was bored with the show .... simply tired. Project Runway is my favorite reality show and Heidi and Tim are just marvelous....not to leave out the others.

  1. I was surprised to see the type of designs in this group compared to those outstanding designers of last season. There is something lacking in this group. I could have designed rings around them and I'm 60.

This group looks like they just came out of junior high and are trying to act rather than design stylish clothing. I think I'll look for the auditions for next season, just to step it up a notch....Tim! Oh TIM!!!! Where is the next audition going to be!!!???

  1. I concur with the boycott. Boycott the show unless the edit out all of Suede's references to himself in the third person.
