'SYTYCD:' Tonight's deepish thoughts

Posted by Joanna Weiss July 23, 2008 11:24 PM

1) The more I watch, the more consider Katee a secret weapon. She makes every guy she pairs with look phenomenal -- and while a lot of them are phenomenal in their own right, the partnership adds something special. I'm not sure what it is, but it's something beyond technique -- as if she's some sort of psychic conduit for whatever dance she happens to be doing.

2) It's hard not to figure that Comfort and Mark are on the chopping block this week, since no one else had a routine that was even remotely panned. But next week, it's going to get really, really tough.

3) Courtney as a little girl looks exactly like Courtney as a grown-up dancer! It's a little uncanny.

4) Toni Basil, of looooong-ago "Oh, Mickey!" fame, is a surprisingly cogent judge. Better than any other guest judge this season, she was able to connect performance critiques with specific steps or motions that went wrong. And when she liked something, she liked it for a specific reason, free of those vague "wows" and "hot tamales." Come to think of it, she's probably the only judge all season who had criticism for Katee -- and it was smart, kind, constructive criticism that made Nigel and Mary nod. I wonder what she says to Bette Midler?

5) When I saw that a disco number was on tap, I started to yawn. But then I watched Joshua and...wow. I daresay he puts Travolta to shame. (Except for Travolta in "Hairspray," which is a different story.)

6) After watching these dancers week after week, learning two complicated routines plus however many intricate group numbers they're tasked with performing in the results show, a thought occurred to me tonight: How did Jason Castro have any excuse for forgetting the lyrics to "Tambourine Man"?

Too many fangirls screaming in his dreadlocked hair.

And Chelsie danced a much better "Damaged" rendition than Chris Crocker would ever do.

I'm getting a little weary of 'IV Real' the 'IV Real' handsign, and anything that got to do with that inside joke. Mary Murphy's scream still tops, dammit!

Oh, and great post Jo. Keep it up!

  1. LOL Joanna on the Jason comment - good point :).

I agree with all your SYTYCD comments for this week. I will miss Mark, I think he has made for a good partner and is unique. Comfort - I agree will go - and I can take her or leave her. She does always give it a good try each week. I also thought Toni B's critique of Katee was a good, fair, critique. Also, is Twitch back after what I considered an off week last week?

Finally, I am still totally loving Courtney and I fear that she will go next week after Comfort. She is really good - partner, adaptable - and I enjoy her solos. I think that fans like Chelsie better and so Cort is after Comfort - which is too bad in my book. Chelsie has also been good with the pairs dancing - last night she was awesome - but I think her solos are a bit redundant and weak. Good fun !

  1. Never cared for Comfort. Although she tried very hard, she does not have the technique or lines to make it as far as she did. And Mark was definitely the weakest of the male dancers, so Comfort and Mark go tonight. Interesting that the two weakest would be paired by luck of the draw. Perhaps with a stronger partner, Mark would not have lood so bad in the Tango.

The rest are fun to watch and Katee, Courtney and Chelsie definitely have good technique. Katee and Chelsie have the lines though and should make it to the female finals and the I don't care which wins.

Like the raining males dancers even though their technique is lacking. They make up for it with strength and energy.

  1. I fully agree about Katee's inexplicable talent for partnering and making each guy look way better than with any other partner. She is a very generous performer is the thing; she is highly skillful and aware of her own job, also aware of her partner and she tailors her dancing to them. Seems to me the guys are mostly all about themselves.
I disagree about Toni's comments, I found them sour and rather dismissive of Katee abnd loaded with the subtext purpose to further the idea of an "Untrained" hip hop street dancer as the most worthy. That woudl be Twitch of course.
And folks should know, Joshua was trained every summer of his life by Debbie Allen and he received other formal training as well. He admits this in the Ft Worth newspaper interview AFTER he won.
The whole scam of his talent being so important because untrained was disgraceful; and I believe drew votes away from Katee.
On an even playing field where every one was as honest about the full background and named names, I believe the audience would have made a better and "informed" decision.
BTW same is true vav Twitch as "UNTRAINED". He graduated from the same Chapman U dance program which Katee currently attends. It is a very competitive program and I doubt he got in without ANY prior training.
This show is a hoax and viewers need to be more discerning about what they believe. It has been rightly pointed out to me that "Favorite Dancer' doesn't necessarily mean best dancer. But Nigel chooses the winner each year based on HIS agenda and subtlely instructs the audience which dancer to choose. Never doubt it.
As for me I watched this season because I happened to channel surf into one of Katee's routines and immediately stopped to watch her.. thinking to myself "And who exactly IS this lovely dancer?" I was hooked for the season.
But the show is sooo tacky and sooo manipulated I will not watch again and I plan to 'bust 'em' far and wide, as I am doing here.
