'SYTYCD:' Two of a Kind

Posted by Joanna Weiss July 17, 2008 12:07 AM

Wow. Weren't Will and Katee were meant to be together, in a cosmic dance-pair sense? Their technical skills really put them over the edge tonight, and when they dance as a duo, you realize just how good each of them is. Will is especially mesmerizing to watch, a likely favorite to win it all.

I also think the Chelsie-Gev pairing is a good one (and I'm not just being height-ist here). Mark and Kherington, perhaps a little less so, though I love the way Mark carries himself during routines. And Comfort, saved by a few fractured ribs, finally gets a guy who can match her in hip-hop-ness. She and Twitch might not be able to waltz, but they can groove.

In addition...
Solos that struck me, though I'm no expert on these things: Gev, Courtney, Joshua.
In danger, I suppose: Kherington, Comfort (again), Mark, Gev (because the judges were harsh about that jive).
Strange moment of the night: Hearing a David Archuleta single. Though that pas-de-deux routine was breathtaking.
Moment of realization: The country two-step looks awfully hard.

  1. I love, love, love Katie and Will as a couple. They, together are so technically clean that it's breathtaking to watch! They are true naturals...!!! Comfort and Twitch hip hop skills are out of control...but I'm not sure it's enought to save her...She may go. I also think that our little spitfire, Courtney is an underdog...at times, she blows house!

and to touch base on Jessica...I'm sad that she's injured, but I also feel that she gave up a loooong time ago. Hopefully one day soon she'll realize how gifted she is and finally break out of her comfort box.

This show NEVER gets old for me!

xoxoxoxoxo...so you think you can dance, dance, dance.....
    :o)

  1. The Country Two-Step was awful. I'm sure it's very difficult, but they looked so uncomfortable that it was almost unwatchable. I was cringing throughout--it really bothered me that they weren't critiqued nearly as harshly as Twitch/Comfort were for their waltz. For while the waltz wasn't great, it was certainly at least a step above the two-step. I think Mark is great, and certainly was better than Kherington in that number, still--based on his performances last night, he should be the male sent home. Comfort will probably be sent packing again, although based on the evening alone, Kherington should be.

The best of the night? Aside from the obviously BRILLIANT Katee and Will, I thought Joshua really stood out--his solo was phenomenal. I voted for him (my first time ever voting for a reality competition).

Oh, and I think praise should be given to L'il C as a judge. He managed to be articulate, fair, and non-blathering--something that has really been yet to be seen on the judging panel this season.

  1. It was hard to watch last night the new pairings. A few did well, others not so much. Will and Katee were fantastic and it is clear that they are way more advanced dancers than the others. I really like both of them but the ones I like more are: Joshua, Mark, Gev, Courtenay and Chelsea. Chelsea is really good and seems to be able to handle each genre. There is just something about Mark and his "can do" attitude that makes me really like him even though he probably isn't the best dancer. I like Twitch too but I hope that he doesn't get too cocky with trying to make a brand for himself on the show. He seems to play cocky and then innocent when he is up with Cat.

I am fearful for Kherington, she might go tonight. She was great with Twitch each week but has seemed to have lost some of her energy. I think she is good and adorable but she doesn't seem to be adapting very well (though that two-step was h-a-r-d). I seem to be the only one in my group that kind of likes Comfort though I do think it is time for her to go.

I am surprised that the judges haven't given Gev more props for being so adaptable to the different genres - like they have done for Josh. I think he has done a really good job and especially when you see his solos as he is terrific hiphopper. Finally, while not the most talented, I think I like Courtenay the best. There is just something about her - regular girl from NYC (reminds me of home?), great with every partner, great with most genres, genuine, cute and tries really hard. I agree she is the underdog and I hope she goes far. She is a doll (or appears to be).

As for the judges and Cat, I agree Lil C was very good, I can handle Mary and while Nigel can be creepy - it comes across that these judges really care about these kids, want to see them improve and go far. This panel makes the Idol panel look like a bunch of parrots (just repeating the same thing each week) or clowns.

As for Cat, I have always liked her and I think she also is a genuine person and really cares for these kids. She is also showing quite the cheeky sense of humor as of late. Great show, great fun, have a great day !

  1. I am in a state of shock over choice of Kherington being sent home over a dancer who was kicked out to begin with. To have brought back Comfort was one thing but for her to be allowed another chance and then to be kept over Kherington was too much. Comfort has never belonged on this show and although I give her kudos for lasting as long as she did, she was voted off by the judges, brought back by the judges, then kept by the call-in votes.

The producers of this show have made such a huge mistake and it has given me a reason to no longer respect anything the judges may do or say.

As for Mia, can she do anything but cry at her own work or be cruel to the dancers?
