As part of the much-touted revamping for the upcoming eighth season, "American Idol" is adding another judge: Grammy-nominated songwriter Kara DioGuardi.

My initial reaction is: Why not? Fox has hinted that a few tweaks are coming to the "Idol" format, which makes sense, since the show -- while still an industry behemoth -- slipped a bit in the ratings this season. The Paula-Simon-Randy dynamic has gotten a little tired, or at least utterly predictable. And "So You Think You Can Dance" does well with rotating its panel every week. Look for more "Idol" changes in the months to come...I've seen widespread hints that the show might be expanding its age range, which scares me a little bit. Or maybe a lot.
