'SYTYCD:' Leaps and bounds
Confession: I didn't see the full "So You Think You Can Dance" finale tonight. Arrived home from Jacob's Pillow -- Live dancers! In the flesh! -- in time to see the victor's inspirational speech. More on that after the jump. And if you watched, feel free to offer up impressions in the comments.
Also - in response to commenter Jason-is-a-Riot, my own 4-year-old does watch portions of "SYTYCD" on the DVR. (And portions of it live, on occasion, if she's having trouble going to bed.) When she watched Twitch's last solo, she launched into a pretty impressive imitation. I think that sort of dance requires either supreme talent or the energy (and short limbs) of a preschooler.
As for Joshua...can't say I'm surprised, and I'm certainly not disappointed. He's a crowd-pleasing dancer with a come-from-behind story, he pulls off superhuman leaps, and he seems like an awfully nice guy. He could have played football. He chose to dance. That's a bold move in some circles, and while I have nothing against football, I'm glad he took this path.

Great show last night and so happy that Joshua won it all ! Seems to me that these dancers all really liked each other and were geniunely happy for one another. Yes, the show was bloated and there was alot of filler but I walked away saying, "this show is just good plain fun entertainment."
Joanna - I hope you are able to go back and watch on DVR as it would be worth it, especially on a rainy Friday. The bulk of the show was of the judges calling up their favorite routines and having the dancers do them again, Some of my favorters were featured but I was really surprised that no one chose the Mia Michaels - Chelsea/Mark wedding dress routine. The best part was that both Mary and Nigel danced (separately). Mary danced with Dimitri and Nigel danced with the Debbie Allen dance troupe. Both did a really great job. Nice legs Mary ! I totally give credit to this show for having fun and being able to showcase everyone's talents for better or worse. How many times have we said, "I wonder if these judges can dance?" And they showed that they did - kudos to them - it was a blast.
My only criticism of the show and I have said the same in year's past is that once they announce the winner, the finale doesn't have much fanfare. They let them say a few wods, confetti comes down and then Cat says goodnight. I kind of feel the same with Idol but at least the winner gets a last song. And as Twitch and Josh were the last two standing, Twitch didn't even get his retrospective.
Great show, they know how to do it right and I hope all the dancers go on to great things. And LOL Joanna on your daughter imitating Twtich - great stuff.
Cheers !
I think this is the first "competition" where I didn't have an absolute favorite. I was hoping Twitch would win but am happy that Joshua won. I also loved Courtney and thought she might be a dark horse and pull it through.
I am so glad that I started watching this season. The entertainment value has been immense. Never before has a "reality/competition" show brought so many different emotions. I laughed out loud, I cried, it made me happy, sad and completely entertained. I enjoyed every single competitor and am convinced that dancers all have a special characteristic about them. They all handled their eliminations so well. Is it a grace trait that they all possess? I loved them all. If there is such a thing as reincarnation, please let me come back a dancer. I really think all parents should let their children watch this show. I'm even thinking they should have dance classes offered as an alternative to gym classes in schools. Which I know will never happen as they seem to cut more of the Arts/Music education from school programs. *SIGH*
The judging (minus Mary's shrieks) was well thought out and criticism was always constructive and never insulting. I really think AI should look at this show as a model to revamp AI. I like the alternating judge. I like that some of the alternate judges actually got to work hands on with the dancers. I think I have even developed a crush on Nigel.
I really can't say enough about this show and I can't wait until next season. It has truly brought by appreciation for dance to a much higher level. It is definitely the 'BEST SHOW THAT MORE PEOPLE NEED TO WATCH".
As they slowly peeled away the layers, it was evident that Courtney would be the first to go, but then a twist...Katee went next...WOW, was I blown away!!!
Leaving our two incredible hip hoppers! I would have been happy to see either Twitch or Josh take the crown...but in the end Josh won over America. It's a complete joy to see someone so deserving to walk away with all that mula!
The show overall, was amazing...all of the SYTYCD alumni, previous contestants and auditioners...routines that made your head spin and your soul feel good, real good!!! Even Mary Murphy got her groove on...I'm sure she was brilliant back in her day!!!! Then Nigel coming out with the Debbie Allen Dancers...it was perfect!!!
I tell ya...I can't get enough of this show...it's like my morning coffee, if I don't have my fix my day is blown to bits!
CAN'T WAIT FOR NEXT SEASON!
~CONGRATS JOSH!
XOXOXO

=o)
Mary and Nigel dancing? I'll definitely watch. I've been dying to see that all season. I imagine they dance much better than Paula or Simon could sing.
I really didn't know who I wanted to win last night, but I thought Twitch would win. I was so shocked when Katee was eliminated second!
*** What does Joshua win??? My fiance asked me last night and I had no idea! They keep changing the prizes every freakin year.***
I was blown away by Mary last night! I don't particularly like her, but she looked great on the dance floor. Sitting at the judges' table she always looked out of shape to me, but she proved me wrong.
Causewaychaos - I agree that the judging on this show is way more constructive and supportive, but they are definitely harsh from time to time. Mostly Mia.
Not much to add to the terrific comments already offered.
Need to put a plug in for Kat....she is one terrific host. Not only is she able to keep the show moving forward with grace and humor. But if one of her questions or comments to the judges go flat -- she is able to poke fun at herself. The moment she shared the tooth "grates" from Twitch's mouth ---- spit and all --- she won me over. A kinda celebrity & sister.
Truly she comes across as caring about each and everyone one of the contestants and their feelings. In the moment of disappointment after a being voted off -- she would hold each one tight, often referring to them using a pet name or referring to their best qualities, anything to make them feel special during the time they have to watch their "history" with the show. None of this came across as fake --- sometimes her eyes were misty with emotion.
The show is great. The approach is intended to entertain and to inform -- both the dancers and the program viewers. The standards are very high and the judges, producers, correographers, host & musicians all see to have deep respect for each other. This comes across
