Politics, Palin and 'SNL'
A lot of politics on this week's "SNL," and couple of alumni, too: Tina Fey reprised her role as Sarah Palin, Chris Parnell turned up as Jim Lehrer in a mock-debate sketch, and the news contained its fair share of political jokes, none of which I can remember nearly 24 hours later.
While Fey's impression of Palin remains pitch-perfect, her sketch -- a nearly point-for-point parody of Katie Couric's interview with Palin, co-starring Amy Poehler as a perplexed and irritated Couric -- wasn't as jaw-droppingly funny as the the one two weeks ago. The novelty has worn off a bit, but I think the bigger problem is that the original CBS interview was such an incredible TV artifact that it required no further elaboration. (In fact, as Andrew Sullivan points out, some of the sketch was transcribed directly from the interview.)
As for the debate sketch, it was OK, and notable for the fact that the "SNL" writers are clearly trying to stick it to Obama as much as they are to McCain. But again, unlike last spring's first Clinton-Obama debate sketch, in which one of the moderators asked Obama if he'd like a pillow, I doubt this one is going to change the national conversation. Still, I think I'm being a little harsh. I'm sure these sketches are incredibly hard to pull off, great or merely good, in just over 24 hours. The source material wasn't ripe for parody, aside from Lehrer's desperate attempts to get the two candidates to address one another. Plus, it's always nice to see Parnell. I'm looking forward to more time with Dr. Spaceman on "30 Rock."

There is no limit to what Palin might do should she become President. She could destroy the Earth.
You know what's amazing for me as an observer of how Americans going through president race? It all looks like a cat fight. I was intoduced to SNL and I thought this is one of the funniest show on TV, but not now. What I see is SNL become just another way for democrats to let everybody know what they think. No, I'm wrong, not for all SNL crew, but for Tina Fey. I thought she left, what's her problem now? What happened to equal rights for both parties democrats and to be laught at? Why wouldn't she write something to mimic Biden or Billary? My personal opinion that Seth Meyers as head writer should put his foot down stop being under Tina Fey's thunb and do something about bringing SNL to be funny.
SNL Sarah Palin interview
Palin in the Dan Quayle of the 21st Century
this is funny?
Sarah has never evolved beyond the publicity stunt that McCain needed. Sarah is snarky, sarcastic entertainment, a Joan Rivers, brought in to hopefully develop and entertain a swarm of giddy fans. Well, it worked...before it backfired. Sarah hasn't been anything more than Sen. McCain's grandstanding of the same type we saw with his 'campaign suspending.' Sarah has been fun entertainment. She needn't pretend to be more.

I think SNL is DISGUSTING!!!!!! Why don't they get a life. The selection of the President and Vice President of our great country is very serious business. SNL has NO business demeaning Gov. Palin. Their goal is to help mindless voters justify their lack of knowledge of what is important in the seriousness of voting.
I thought the skit was hilarious. Fey acutally made Palin look better than she actually is, which, of course, doesn't say anything good about Palin. The crack about the UN being full of foreigners was brilliant!
Talented actress though she is, Tina Fey just cannot come across as the real Sarah Palin's level in conceited ignorance.
SNL is a comedy show, it is not meant to be earth-shattering. Your expectations are misplaced.
How about SNL ripping Joe Biden with his foot in mouth diesase? The continuous attack on Palin is getting stale now - even counter productive. Swing both ways guys!
Tina Fey of SNL somehow looks better than the real Sarah Palin.
Anyhow Palin should be recalled if you know what I mean. Palin's interview were so disjointed and rote, I can agree why the GOP is growing concerned by the day.
The article was about as boring as the subject material.
I thought the latest sketch was hilarious, whoever wrote this is obviously a palin supporter, voting for McCain based on that fact alone.
The blunder into Iraq would pale in comparason to a war with Russia begun by President Palin!
Palin is scary, every moment I think about President Palin, it scare my pants off!
Can this woman be our president? What 'white wrinkly dude' thinking about US? Is that a desperate joke about our future?
McCain is a gutter politician, same like Bush. And it will bring disaster for US.
These skits really put politics into perspective. The Palin skit in particular makes me shiver, since it's basically spot on.
SNL isn't the daily show but they hit from time to time. Incorporating the actual response from Palin was comedic gold...although not laugh out loud funny...instead really highlighting the pathetic response of Palin. She won't make it to the debate on Thursday. Expect Rudy G. Wall Street is in big trouble and McCain needs someone on the ticket that has experience dealing with 'smoking craters' in lower Manhatten.
Boy isn't Sarah Palin dumb. I'm glad SNL can say these things. I can't wait until they start to make Barack Obama look like the fool he is too. I'm going to make my political choice based on what SNL tells me to.
Do you think SNL might be supporting Barak Obama?
The debate skit is mostly one sided. The Palin skit was all one sided. When it is not balanced, it is not funny. The skit at the season opener was much funnier because it poked fun at everyone. No attempt to do that here.
Go back and watch the debate sketch. Count how many jabs at McCain vs. how many at Obama. It was laughably one-sided, as is most of the Boston Globe's coverage.
I'm sort of waiting to see what type of "STUNT" Palin will use to get out of the the debate on Thursday.
Joanna is willing to cut SNL much more slack than I am.....for a show that is supposedly the pinnacle of young, cutting-edge talent, 24 hrs should be plenty of time to put a sketch together. The Daily Show, Colbert Report, Letterman, and Leno have been doing it for years. Also, what does it say about the current cast when alums need to be brought back in every week? Have the writers run out of fresh ideas just two weeks into the season? Tina Fey's return was at first a nice surprise, but come on. Come up with something fresh.
The author nailed it: it would be difficult to create anything as absurd as Palin's original interview.
Can Tina Fey run for vice-president instead?
This video shows how our SARAH has a WONDERFUL sense of humor. She showed a lot of guts to appear on Saturday Night Live. Hardly any other candidate would purposely appear to be as dumb as she did. Only Sarah would...............what's that? ... it wasn't really Sarah?.... Never Mind.
"Palin in the Dan Quayle of the 21st Century "
That is an insult to Dan Quayle.
McCain has sold his 73-old soul to be president and that is why he elected Palin - a real idiot as his running mate. Palin is truly a joke for the whole world. I wonder what was her SAT score - did she take one?
I will be waiting for SNL to choose Biden for it's next spoof, but I think it won't be anytime soon. The political bias has left a bad taste. I will be changing the channel soon unless Biden also gets his just rewards.
isn't it beautiful (& in this case frightening )how art imitates life.... bravo SNL... let the brilliant truth of palins stupidity shine on every saturday night!!! god bless us all if mccain & her run this desperate country.
Connie from Minnesota.... are you also appalled by the status of our country, the economy and the war? Maybe you should find something YOU SHOULD BE DISGUSTED ABOUT, other than a skit on TV from a show that's been doing this stuff for 30 years!!!! Their satire is calling out the very point you're trying make. That McCain obviously has poor judgement for picking this woman. You disagree however... You tend to fall in line with the mindless voters that you're calling out. Read an article Connie, even people on your side don't think she's fit to be VP. So instead of putting on this facade of fake rage because you disagree with the skit, just go vote and shut up. In the end it's your mindless comments that are obvious self justification for why you're going to vote way you want to anyway.
I'm happy to have a laugh at the expense of a politician. Really. But where I have an issue, is when a show like SNL is used as a political vehcile to promote one over another - or to promote one party over another. This is the case with SNL's Palin skits. It'd be one thing if she was alone in creating lines that easily become funnypage fodder - but why didn't Joe Biden's comments make the cut? (The one about how we need to be assured our leaders are knowledgeable and then went on to talk about FDR, the 1929 stock market crash and him being on TV). To me, that's perfect for SNL to make fun at. Why is it that they didn't? You don't suppose it would undermine their agenda? If Pailn had said what Binden did last week, it would be 24/7 coverage and calls for her to step down as a candidate. If SNL can't be fair, is that too much to ask that our news organizations?
Anyone catch David Lee doing John McCain on Mad TV? Now that was funny!
Sarah Palin is who she is and if McCain didn't know that before he hired her to be his PR draw, then it's clear to me that he too is unfit for this ticket. I'm a Democrat who would really like to be able to struggle with the choice between the Democrats and the Republicans, but alas I cannot. These people are insane and God help us all if the majority of Americans prove to be too naive to figure this out by November 4th. The fact that SNL has the right, indeed the obligation, to mock anyone it sees fit to mock, proves that our country is a great one. But as the Supreme Court tilts further to the right, it's only a matter of time before Norman Lear does time for allowing these kinds of paradies on national tv.
You can't make this stuff up! Or can you?
SNL will continue to harvest the Palin bounty while it can...which is approximately 5 more weeks. After that she will be back home keeping an eye out for Russians.
"Tina Fey of SNL somehow looks better than the real Sarah Palin."
You gotta be kidding me if you think that, Tina Fey looks like my grandma--who's been dead for five years. I guess nobody's watching 30 Rock (or SNL when they aren't doing SP skits).
What they really need to do is get some of Joe Biden's hair plugs for Amy Poehler, goog god she has Paul Begala's forehead!
That's what's so great about our country--we can change the channel!!
I personally think it was funny. Biden has only made a few dumb comments, but it is coming from a woman that makes it more notable, thus becoming sexist. I don't care, I just think it's funny. It proves that beautiful women don't always have a brain. She will NEVER be taken seriously, unlike the likes of Hillary and many other smart not so good looking women in our govenment. Call it sexist, I call it as I see it. I don't like Obama either, but she is why NOT to vote for McCain!
I think a lot of you have the very odd idea in your heads that SNL is in some way obligated to be impartial. The entertainment industry is very liberal in general and has been for quite some time. SNL is not a news source, has made no claims of impartiality, and has as much right as all of us to express themselves as they see fit. These are artists, not C-SPAN commentators!! They certainly do have an impact but so do a lot of other individuals and groups that publicly lean left/right. If unions, businesses, newspapers, business moguls and celebrities can freely endorse who they choose, why on earth can't a comedy skit show?!?
Oh come on - people! It is parody! The reason why they haven't spoofed Biden is because they don't have a cast member who has the looks and mastered the body language of Biden. Tina Fey is spot on. I applaud her brilliance, and I agree, she would make a much better VP. Maybe the Repubs can get her to stand in for the debate.
HOW SAD!! His first major decision, and what does he do, he chooses Sarah Palin as his vice president. Well, this is the result of John McCain eratic behavior. SNL--- great work!
Tina Fey keeps nailing it, and its hilarious. But she does need to be careful. Can you imagine if Palin's feelings got hurt and she quit? McCain would have to take time out of his fanatic attacks, go back to Hooters, and find a replacement...
Now everybody just shut up, Palin is just as bright as George Bush.
Uh, folks, it's a comedy show. Demanding equal time from SNL is like demanding equal time from Mad Magazine. You look silly, stop it.
So what? Palin had a bad interview. I didn't see the MSM jump down Obama's throat for thinking there are 57 states or his idiocy as he discovered America for the first time this year. There is apparently a double standard and this does not affect the stance of Palin supporters. If MSM is so clever then why is the race a dead-heat. Sorry I don't watch SNL.... I hasn't been funny in 30 years.
Granted that many Americans fail to see the Sarah Palin reflected in Tina Fey's brilliant satire and will vote Republican against all reason. Still, I wonder, as the polls continue to swing toward Obama/Biden, whether McCain may make a last minute Hail Mary switch to a more rational VP choice. Will Romney rise again from the bailout's fallout?
Suppose - arrgh! - that Tina Fey's Palin parody actually generates a sympathetic pro-Palin popular propensity. Will history record the event as The SNL Bailout?
Come on people! It's funny stuff. Don't get your underwear tied up in knots just because you like McCain and Palin. And b esides that, don't watch it. Nobody is twisting your arm!
There were pretty much just as many jabs at Obama as McCain, especially if you count the pretty spot-on aping of Obama's voice and "ummmmmmmmmmmm" mannerisms. The McCain stuff was a little more over-the-top and outrageous because, frankly, that's the kind of guy he was in the debate, too. Dude is off is rocker! Sorry.
SNL has NO business demeaning Gov. Palin, she does that all by herself!
Holy Jesus! Tina Fey NAILED it! She IS Sarah Palin. This is fantastically wonderful. I love SNL.
And Palin won't destroy the Earth, God created it, and she can't destroy anything God created...except the Iraqis...
"Granted that many Americans fail to see the Sarah Palin reflected in Tina Fey's brilliant satire and will vote Republican against all reason. Still, I wonder, as the polls continue to swing toward Obama/Biden, whether McCain may make a last minute Hail Mary switch to a more rational VP choice. Will Romney rise again from the bailout's fallout?"
Hell, I'd rather switch Romney with MCCAIN, as should have been the case this past spring.
If you want "fair and balanced" comedy, you ought to watch Hannity and Colmes. Or Jay Leno. Nobody forced Dan Quayle to misspell potato, and nobody made Sarah Palin reveal that "seeing Russia from Alaska" is foreign policy experience. She's in the major leagues with a "bush league" intellect and experience set. Though any hockey mom COULD BECOME qualified to be president, not EVERY hockey mom (or dad) IS qualified. There are hundreds of millions of over-35 year old native born citizens...is she even in the top 10%? Sarah Palin is a poster child for what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they invented the Electoral College! Where was all this concern when each of the Clintons got skewered on SNL or on Rush Limbaugh or on "fair and balanced" other programs? Is SNL more or less biased than Ann Colter?
Why is it that you Right of Rush responders sound like a 3 year old having a temper tantrum? "It's not fair". "they're picking on Sarah", "it's not funny". Obviously you have not done your homework, because if you had, the bulk of what was parodied were Palin's own words. In fact, CNN showed the real interview and the parody back to back. What's "funny" to me, is that for the 2 months the press hammered Obama about reverend Wright, and that of course was o.k., and wasn't being one sided, but Tina Fey makes 2 appearances on SNL, and you would think it was the end of the world. I guess the best defense is a good offense, right, you right wing wacko's? Just go from the temper tamptrum to the school bully, then back to the tantrum. No substance. And if you can legitimately say that Palin is a legitimate candidate, I have some lovely waterfront property in Louisiana I would love to sell you. (Unless FEMA bought it already!)
I'm very surprised she didn't say, "I want world peace."
I think Connie should get a life. Awesome show and don't think it would have lasted as long as they have as it seems like they have a life. A long one. Should I suggest Fox get a life because it's all Republican? Lighten up Connie.
Brilliant! Tina Fey Amy Poehler skits! And boy do I need a laugh these days.
It would have been criminal for SNL and Tina Fey to pass up the rich opportunity that JOHN MCCAIN handed them! Tina Fey's physical resemblance to Sarah Palin is in itself enough for her to return to SNL for the remainder of this political campaign. Excellent satire. One would think that those who disapprove of political satire would not watch SNL.
To you people claiming that SNL's portrayal of Palin is biased: If you watch the actual interview, you will see that SNL's version is almost verbatim. Palin didn't mention dollar meals, but everything else is very close. That's what makes it both funny and very, very scary.
OK - Tina Fey does do a great impression of Palin. But why is it only the Republcian candidates that get ridiculed for being imcompetent? I heard a comedian say there was nothing funny about Obama. Sure there isn't. Are you telling me skits can't be made out of: 1) his overreliance on teleprompters; 2) his referring to "New Pennsylvania" and 57 states; 3) his calling Biden "the next president of the United Stetes"; and 4) making a mock presidential seal for himself? All of those would be very easy to make humorous. Considering most of the people associated with SNL are on the Left, and comedians are probably too scared of Obama being half-African, they refuse to play fair. Pretty sad.
I would like to ask John McCain if he thinks the Palin Surge is over? Ok the Palin Surge worked, but can we now withdraw all her scripted lines and let her speak and support herself?
I would love to hear Sarah Palin speak unscripted, however I think it would simply end up being better cannon fodder for SNL, the talk shows and the news media. The material Sarah Palin delivers could provide so many jokes that the comedian's around the country could sell enough tickets to pull us out of our $700 billion hole!
I never thought McCain would be so desperate to get into the White House he would pick this bimbo as his running mate. How many colleges did she go to...was it five? I am sure Katie Couric was trying not to laugh her head off. How are they going to get this dummy ready for the debate? She is apparently holed up at one of McCain's seven houses to cram. She is going to say she has more experience than Obama. I want to see this nut case get into Harvard. When I see her I think she should work at the perfume counter in Macy's. When is she going on Meet the Press for one hour?
#59: riting is wone of thuh three are's, wright?
This parody was too close to the truth to be funny, which frightens me.
After reading most of these postings, I don't believe anyone here has the right to judge her. What gives anyone here the right to ridicule , criticize, or demean her. She is a human being who deserves to be at least treated like one. Maybe because she does have morales and values and believes in God's laws she is stupid and dumb. Sarah Palin is not the one we need to worry about...it's the cruel and ignorant ones that post these notes that this country needs to worry about. She at least has made something of herself, sounds like a lot more than most of us.
These folks are playing the venerable role of court jester whose role was to speak frankly and humorously--in jest, if you will--even on controversial issues. While some thought they were inept, comic satire takes a bit of intelligence to create.
HAHA this is great stuff. the real interview was one of the worse things i have ever seen. palin is not capable to run this country in the event mccain peels over...and for that matter, isn't capable as serving as a VP in the first place. if you like her, you will urge her to step down because she is way over her head and the only reason mccain picked her is because he knew it was the ONLY chance he had to get a few sour hillary votes.
the truth hurts, lighten up people! It's funny come on people.
I don't know who's funnier, Tina Fey or Sarah Palin. I can't wait until the VP debate to see how many gaffes Palin makes. Will there be a Sarah Palin drinking game? A shot of tequilla (drinking this counts for foreign policy experience) for everyone of Palin's mistakes?
Parody isn't funny unless it has the ring of truth. And these SNL skits are extremely funny. Sarah Palin may be the darling of certain zealots in this country because of her stated religious beliefs, but in my opinion McCain has made a serious mistake in picking someone with her lack of intergrity. Just look at the facts surrounding her alleged opposition to the infamous "bridge to nowhere". So, while she is a laughing stock because of her lack of knowledge and understanding, and she is attractive in a "church lady" sort of way, don't underestimate her political skills in hiding an evil and cynical willingness to mislead the public.
I would love to see a woman in the White House. The woman's movement has struggled for decades to try and make this happen. HOWEVER,the selection of Sarah Palin as our potential Vice President, makes a mockery of this struggle.
Let's make our first woman president, a brilliant formidable leader that we can remember with pride. We need a leader, not a pretty face that hasn't got a clue. This woman is not the role model that I want my daughters to emulate. I want a leader that can think, not bat her eyes and smile, when her mediocrity is revealed. No matter what you believe, Wake up America, and use some judgement before you pull that lever. With Sarah Palin, you won't know who is making the decisions.
With witchcraft, young-earth Creationism, theocracy, the Masters Commission, etc. there is no end to the Sara jokes. More to come Thursday for sure. "In what respect, Charlie?" I've been hearing that line in business meetings to avoid a hard question...;) priceless.
I love this stuff. I am waiting for their version of the VP debate spoof. This is all in fun. SNL has been doing this stuff for years. Remember Will Rogers? When he started making fun of Washington some thought he was going to get in trouble for it. He got the laughs even from the ones he was making fun of. Making fun of Sarah Palin just because she is a woman is a weak argument. She is a politician like the other guys. She is fair game like the men.
Tina was just awesome in the sketch from the first week. Did anyone notice that Fey's look changed from week 1 to week 2? There was embleshed jaw line on the sides of her face that made her look exactly like the governor. Week two didn't have this extra makeup. I wonder if snl was asked not to make such an exact make of job of Palin so that it would not appear to be the real thing.
Great job Tina! And to Sarah, you go girl! Get that White House!
Enough of Ms. Fey's impersonation of Sara Palin. Perhaps the makeup artists could transform her face into that of the creepy Ms. Pelosi and highlight some of her incredibly stupid comments. Or how about having one of your big boys from the cast could don an incredibly garish, too-tight dress with padding in the rear, and shuffle onto the stage as Michelle Mah-Belle?
I'm a moderate that was considering McCain. Because he chose Palin, I am forced to vote Obama rather than not vote.
Again - SNL is copying - verbatim - what she says.
For anyone to attempt to defend her is ludicris. She has no business being anywhere near Washington DC. She's not qualified for the office of VP.
Obama has said just as many dumb things (57 states, etc) and has had even more moments, without a teleprompter, where he looked like an absolute stammering idiot. The difference is that Palin is fun to take a jab at, and Tina Fey does a fantastic job of imitating her, but Obama is somehow protected. I guess if the media took similar jabs at him, there would be accusations of being racist instead of sexist - certainly the greater sin.
You liberals think you are so knowledgeable but you allow yourselves to sit there and be brainwashed by this skewed satire and don't even know it. Do you really want a disguised socialist government controlling your lives? Get informed and actually study the issues instead of forming opinions based on a liberal biased comedy sketch. Read the Constitution and Bill of Rights and see which candidate will most closely stick to the ideals of the great founders of this country. McCain is not Bush just because they are both Republicans. By the way, I am an Independent who falls into well below the 95% that Obama talks about. Kill small business though, and You kill American economy plain and simple.
It's so funny how everyone says Obama is protected by the media. Come on, the media are sharks, if they had something they would use it. Palin loves the spotlight! She didn't care that they were making fun of what an idiot she is as long as she was in the spotlight! She once again made an ass out of herself and it was her own choice! Funny how McCain tried to make Obama out as nothing but a celebrity and then chose her as his running mate hoping for the same effect. Unfortunately for him she comes off more as a cocktail waitress playing the room for tips. Here is a tip Sarah, admit that you are out of your league!
You think Sarah Palin says dumb things!? Look at Joe Biden!! This guy couldn't get it right if it hit him in the face!! It's just like a bunch of liberals to be hypocritical and contradicting. It's absolutely pathetic!! It just goes to show you that no matter how extreme your views are, you can still be a politician! There are conservatives and then there is everybody else. Obama thinks it's perfectly acceptable to kill babies!!! Regardless if you're a liberal or not, that would be more than enough for me not to vote for this moron!!! People need to do their research. Obama is a phony, and he will ruin this country!!! And the people who vote for him will contribute to the fall of America. Obama supporters are nothing but a bunch of Communists! Get a brain, and do your research!!!! McCain's the democrat running for president and Obama's the Communist!!! Obama is stupid and his policies are too! He's a complete fraud, and he lies about everything!!! And shut the hell up about racism!!! It has nothing to do with race!! It has to do with Obama being a hack of a person!! Obama's the one that wen to a racist church for over 20 years!!! Plus, he's just as much white as he is black!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you vote for Obama, you ruin this country!!!!! You must love government EVERYTHING!!! Give me one good reason why you're voting for Osama, I mean Obama!? What's that!? You can't give me one good reason why you're voting for him!? That figures! No one can give me a reason why they're voting for him!!!!
www.sos.org expresses it best.
I thought it was quite funny, and I also think it's funny how all Republicans are upset about how SNL made fun of her. Did she really expect to go there and have them roll out the red carpet and not crack any jokes? Mccain and Palin already lost this race so they put her on the show to try to get us to think; ok they seem like they might be more then just another pair of uncaring liars like all other Republican candidates (spelling?). But it didn't work and now they're worse off then before. I'm assuming one of them (Mccain or Palin) will be on the Colbert Report to try to presuade (again spelling?) voters. And they will. Only not the way they wanted to.
