' How I Met Your Mother': The Naked Man

Last night's episode of "How I Met Your Mother," the Naked Man, was kinda funny, kinda creepy.

I still love the show, and look forward to it every week. OK, so this season has been just all right so far. The episodes have not been as consistently special as they were during the first three seasons. But hey -- the characters are still likable, the scripts are still tight, and unlike some other sitcoms (cough, "30 Rock," cough), the writers aren't leaning too hard on the guest-star gimmick and ignoring the regular cast. Also, while the "How I Met" stories can get so comically specific -- almost fetishistic, as in ("Woooo girls"!) -- the big ongoing mystery of Ted and his search for "your mother" remains dramatically interesting.

The creepiness last night wasn't the nudity. Fans of "How I Met Your Mother" know that the writers LOVE to show Neal Patrick Harris's body as often as possible. It has become one of the show's many in-jokes. The creepiness was just the whole idea of stripping down naked in an attempt to salvage a blind date, which was the new seduction technique that Barney, Ted, and Lily learned from one of Robin's dates. I don't know about you, but I think most people would be running for the streets if a date stripped down uninvited.

I know, it's a sitcom, and the Naked Man is a joke, and I'm not worried about corrupting minds or the downfall of civilization, and I like risque humor. And I stand by the series. But still -- the whole "indecent exposure" aspect made the episode a little hard to love. Am I alone in this feeling?

  1. Damn kids, get off my lawn! I remember when Doogie Howser used to wear nothing but scrubs. Where are my back pills?

  1. Eh, I thought it was funny in an over-the-top way. My husband turned to me and said, "no offense, but I'd like to be single just to try the Naked Man." That was probably the funniest line of my night...

  1. After seeing that episode last night, I looked over at my wife and said "I wonder how many idiots will try this and end up in the news blaming the show"

  1. Yep, you are alone. I thought the episode was hysterical. I love NPH and wouldn't mind seeing him naked in every episode.

  1. Thinking back, I wish many of the WOMEN on my first dates did that!

  1. I found this episode absolutely hilarious! The naked man has got to be one of the greatest ideas of all time! I am going to try it with my wife tonight. "Honey, dinner's ready!" :)

  1. Funniest episode I've ever seen. Awesome.

  1. This was actually my favorite episode of the season. The scene with Barney and Ted on the phone, each trying a new pose, was pretty brilliant. I haven't laughed so hard since Arrested Development.

  1. Great show, and great episode. Cindy McLennans recaps this show on TWOP (Television Without Pity) and does a great job.

  1. I think this season has been much better than last season.
They have really put an edge on the comedy this season and are doing a good job distancing themselves from being a "friends" knockoff.
    Last nights episode was hysterical.

The biggest comedic dissapointment this yr has been The Office.
That show hasn't lived up to it's past edgy humor.

  1. Oh man, what a great night laughs. A bunch of fans should get together at a bar and watch it. Curious if you can work the Naked Man into the Bro Code...

  1. Art imitates life... I had actually heard stories of "dates" like this where this really occurred as a result of meetings through some of the online personal sites (I'll omit the names in order to not malign the services unfairly).

But I agree with the one poster that there will possibly be a rise (no pun intended) in the occurrence of "naked man" encounters as a result of this show

  1. Once Regis has guest starred on your show, it's all over.

  1. To answer your question: You're all by yourself...
The episode was the only decent in a while... While I doubt any show will regain the sickness factor of Seinfeld, this episode makes me look forward for more.

  1. I am a HUGE fan of the show. The only thing I took issue this episode with was Marshall calling Robin a slut. I found it weird. Maybe not weird but uncomfortable--like you are joking around with your friends and one friend takes it a little too far and there is that awkward silence/uncomfortableness. I think they are all a little morally flexible so it just seemed weird to call her out on it.
Regardless I thought it was a great episode. I loved the 50 reasons to have sex list, especially the "reinforcing good hygeine".

  1. I thought it was funny, but not THE funniest episode. Definitely got a kick out of Barney and Ted's poses.

Something about it made me think they were going for a "Master of the Domain" kind of episode - challenging each other to see who could go through with it, etc.

  1. Matthew, I think you had an off night last night. The "naked man" show was hilarious! Over-the-top? Yes. But still one of the best episodes this season. So glad Sarah Chalke is gone. Love her in Scrubs (can't wait for January) but her Stella was way too dull. Glad Ted was able to get over her this week -- all thanks to the Naked Man Technique. Classic. Agree with Laura: the back and forth phone scene with Barney and Ted was hysterical.

  1. Robin Sparkles is by far the best episode of this show yet. This is one of the few funny sitcoms currently on TV. Too many hospital dramas. Two and a Half Men isn't bad either - but the episodes with Berta are great - she makes the show.

  1. SCSouthie, I think you may be right. Sometime I, uh, overthink. I liked the episode, but once I got the whole "indecent exposure on a blind date" thing in my mind, I got stuck on it.
By the way, I've seen the first two new Scrubs on ABC, and they were surprisingly decent for a series so long in the tooth.

  1. That was a funny episode. That's all that matters. And if you don't think "Naked Man" has not happened in real life, think again!

Turn to According to Jim if "Naked Man" is too risque'

  1. I am ALL ABOUT the Naked Man. I can't imagine another show that would even try this. I know Mitch is imaginary but I'm in awe of his contribution. That was a great show last night

  1. never watched the show until this season as Monday night TV usually bites, I have found "How I Met Your Mother" and think it is hilarious. Naked Man rocked!

  1. The creepiest thing about Naked Man is the fact that he's telling his teenage kids about it. That being said, the show is consistently quality and Naked Man is a great gag.

  1. OMG, I loved this episode. It was the best this season hands down.
The poses that Ted & Barney were doing were just hilarious.
Now don't get me wrong if I were on a date and a guy did that he would have gotten the same reaction that Barney did.

  1. Hilarious show.

"Now I know why I get an erection every time I floss!"

  1. Matt, i think you're discounting the fact that The Naked Man himself was doughy and harmless, and that it was clear that this was not a creepy tone -- i usually dig your coverage of this show, but i didn't agree with you on this one...

  1. This show jumped the shark with Britney Spears. THIS SHOW HAS NOT BEEN FUNNY SHOW for the last season and a half!

  1. This happened to my friend in college, I almost died when it came on last night! She threw him out, sadly I did not get details on his pose...

  1. Ya your wrong, Naked Man is a possibility, a dream, a lifeline in a vast sea, I just wonder if it really works 2 out of 3 times ?

  1. I love this show, but some of the last episodes have lost their scense of humor.
Now it is back. This is HIMYM as we (or at least I) love it, and want it to be.

I know what I am going to do this weekend. Just need to decide between the Heisman and the captain morgan. :-)

    Cheers!

  1. As jayteebee says, what made the episode slightly disturbing was remembering this was all being told to two young teenagers. I love the show, and thought this was the funniest episode this season (I agree that it's been slightly off this run - nothing like the slaps, or Robin Sparkles, to elevate it to greatness).

But like so many episodes, I can't stop reminding myself that it's all being narrated by a father in his 50s to two kids, who must be curling up and dying of embarrassment! Poor things.

  1. I thought the episode was fantastic. The one thought I couldn't get out of my head was the reaction Josh Radnor and NPH must have had when they first received the script. I wonder if the guys were consulted first. Ha ha.

You mentioned in your opening paragraph that "The episodes have not been as consistently special as they were during the first three seasons.". While I agree that this season has not been consistent, I'm going to disagree and say that neither were the first three seasons. In my opinion, HIMYM has always suffered from inconsistency. For every 2 brilliant eps, there is one bad. I can live with that.

  1. How about Seinfeld season 4 ep. 11. 'The Contest' Granted 'Naked Man' showed more skin but George being caught by his mother masturbating is just as disturbing.

This episode of How I met... was awesome, the interaction between Ted and Barney when they decided to do the "Naked Man" on thier dates was laugh out loud funny.

  1. Many years ago, I knew a guy who actually did this naked thing. Although his modus operandi (or so he said) was a bit more to the point: he'd simply expose his genitals.

He claimed the technique frequently "worked," although I am aware of one incident in which it actually got him arrested!!
