CBS just put out an official annoucement: "Guiding Light," the longest-running daytime drama on TV, will broadcast its final episode on Friday, September 18.

By the time of that broadcast, CBS says, the show will have been on the airwaves for 72 years and more than 15,700 episodes -- dating back to 1937, when it debuted as a 15-minute radio serial. It was first on TV in 1952, and switched to one-hour episodes in 1977. It was originally set in a fictional Chicago suburb called Five Points, and now takes place in a town called Springfield.

"No show in daytime or prime time, or anytime, has touched so many millions of viewers across so many years as GUIDING LIGHT," said Barbara Bloom, CBS's senior vice president for daytime programs, according to the release. Do you watch? Did you ever? Will you miss it?

  1. I'm not really going to miss this one,but I will miss soap operas in general, they all seem to be dying out. Praise GOD for SOAPnet!

  1. I have been watching GL since 82 and I will miss it but I have to admit that I lost interest in the last 4 years, the story lines has gotten lame. It is in the records for the longest show in tv history, so they should be proud of the accomplishment! So they should end it with a BANG!

  1. I have fond memories of a long time ago, watching Guiding Light with my mother anytime I had to stay home sick from school. After my father retired we caught him watching the show occasionally too, although he protested that he only knew the story line because my mother liked to watch it. I remember the lighthouse and the opening music, and even the soap commercials....yep, I don't watch it, but I'll miss knowing that it's on, somewhere......

  1. I have followed Guiding Light since the mid 1960s watching with my mom after school. The last few years the plot has struggled - but boy talk about an institution!

  1. It is a real shame that the one soap with a really popular story line (Otalia) is getting the axe. This story line (highlighted in EW recently) has been bringing in more new fans than have watched the show in many years.

  1. I just cannot believe the news I just heard. I have watched Guiding Light for
40+ years. I know the ratings are down, but this is such a shame. I like the
stories and the actors. Daytime will NOT be the same without Guiding Light.
Is there another network that might pick it up? Hope so. Best of luck to all
the actors----- hope to see them on other shows if Guiding Light is truly dropped.

  1. What a pity, all good things must come to an end. It was a great SOAP for so many years, and it had some wonderful actors that made it big, in movies and TV-shows.
Lets hope other CBS shows will not follow, we need to keep the others on air. They are a great escape and fun for so many viewers and fans, of daytime are the greatest!

Lets NOT TURN ALL the lights OFF, from other soaps!!!

  1. When I was a kid during the 50's the hour between noon and one was almost sacred because that's when my mother's "stories" came on. At noon was "Love of Life" followed at 12:30 by "Search for Tomorrow" and at 12:45 by "Guiding Light." We were a rambunctious bunch of little brats, but we knew better than to mess with Mom while her stories were on.

  1. please don't take the guiding light off, i watch every day while i'm getting ready for work. i work for my husband that is why i'm still home at that time of day. i walk from the bathroom to the tv room putting on my mascara just to see what's happening. i used to be a huge fan of general hosptal but that was 4 kids and a hundred years ago. guiding light is the only soap i watch. i love the charachters.
i can't wait for reba to have that baby. jeffrey is a saint and oh so handsome. the only consulation would be if allen spaulding would be blungeoned before my eyes!!

  1. I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS. I WATCHED WITH MY MOM AS A KID. AND MY SONS WATCHED WITH ME WHEN THEY WHERE KIDS. I'VE BEEN A FAN FOR OVER 40 YEARS. YOU CAN ASK MY HUBBY OR SONS ABOUT GUILDING LIGHT AND THEY CAN TELL YOU WHO'S ON THERE. WHY LEAVE JUST CHANGE THE STORY LINES, AND BRING LIFE BACK TO SPRINGFIELD? GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE ACTORS, AND I PRAY SOMEONE ELSE PICKS UP THE SHOW. BOOOOO TO CBS.

I will miss this routine and will miss following the stories. My grandma used to watch too. I am a loyal fan! I can't believe this is true. I will miss this hour of enjoyment and relaxation! Boo hoo.....

  1. I think it is terribly sad. I have watched faithfully from 1982 until 2007. For the last two years, I have recorded daily but only watched once or twice a week. I really feel the latest move with the portable cameras bothered a lot of viewers. In addition, GL was notorious for letting good actors go. I hope they find a way to keep the story alive on cable or online.

  1. I've watched the show since it started on TV. I watched it with my Grandmother when she did her ironing while watching it. This is heart breaking - but money talks . . . Nothing of value or with a history is safe from the bottom line. I wasn't fond of the new format and I think that change was the last nail in the coffin.

Maybe a cable company will pick it up? Lots of us older folks are watching daytime TV now that we're retired or unemployed - lots of loyal viewers would watch it, even if they went back to a half-hour.

Posted by pat merewether April 1, 09 07:34 PM
  1. No way! It's the only soap I still watch. Wait. It's an April Fool's Day joke, right?

  1. WOW! This is indeed sad news. I have heard it over the past few years, but never thought it would actually come to pass. Guiding Light off the air. It is my very favorite show. Not much else on TV these days. I have been an avid fan for at least 35 years... since I was a teenager. I hope they end it with class for all the characters story lines. I hope they bring Jonathan back for Ashley and so Lizzie and be with Sarah. Beth and Philip should be back together by then. Harley could come home for Rick. Olivia with Josh. Lillian and Buzz. Keep Alan ALONE as he deserves. Ofcourse Shayne and Dinah. Last but not least Daisy with Rafe. :)

  1. Move it to CBS. Sandwich it between the Young and the Restless and the Bold and the Beautiful (which, after 20 years, should go to an hour). Let Dr. Phil follow. Guiding Light will soar in the ratings once again, and those who love soaps will have really great little afternoons, five days a week. Let CBS become **the** soaps network.

I automatically tape it every day just in case I'm not home, as do my daughters and watch it at night after they come home from work. What can we do to keep it on the air? CBS - WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU! LIFE WITHOUT REVA? IF THIS IS AN APRIL FOOL.........NOT FUNNY!

  1. What are they going to put on more talk show garbage? Guiding Light may sometimes be far fetched, but it is relief from the reality shows, horrible talk shows, and a distraction from the mess going on in the world. I enjoy watching and remember watching with my mom 35+ years ago. I hope the network changes this decision and keeps the show on the air.

  1. This is truly the death of daytime Soap-Opera...... It's truly sad. This show should be kept on just because of the record and for the record (longest running progam). I remember watching it with my mom, uncle, and grandmon starting back in the 1979 (it was the year before I was to enter kindergarden). The theme music and sunlight of the opening credits barely hinting through the trees, and yes; still till this day, the show (it's new look) and theme song still touches me. May it rest in peace; for "Only Love Can Save The World" GUIDING LIGHT..............

I'm a stay at home mom and I've used my "stories" as an escape when the kids are napping! I will be sorry to see it go. Good luck to the actors! Just shows how bad this economy is, not even actors are safe!

  1. I guess the programming geniuses at cbs daytime will fill that time slot with another judge show or some washed up actor being given a talk show. They are tossing away a piece of American television history. I hope it finds another venue to keep the stories coming.

  1. I am so very disappointed that my favorite show on TV has been cancelled. I used to watch this as a kid with my mom in the 60"s. My kids watched with me, We would talk about the characters and what happened on the show like they were our friends. I look forward to coming home from work and watching it on the internet. Come on... we just got Phillip back!!

  1. CBS has really screwed up with this one!!! Moving GL to the 10 am time slot was the firs mistake they made. My entire family has watched GL from my grandma to my mother. Mom and I still watch it and are very faithful fans of the show.I DVR the show and watch it after work everyday. We both cried like babies recently when "Coop" died. I REALLY HOPE THAT CBS RECONSIDERS THIS DECISION. I do not find the story lines bland at all. Sure there aren't any women that are possessed by the devil and the sex scenes are far from the risky sex scenes on most daytime tv but that is what I love about the show it is about real people.

Boo to CBS! I have MANY happy memories thru the years because they(the actors) made you feel like family. I have laughed and cried MANY tears(especially when Charita Baur died). I am very sad that this is happening and my grandmother God rest her soul is probably turning over in her grave!! I too hope another station picks it up!

It is actually the only show that I tune in to CBS to watch. I am highly dissappointed and deeply saddened. I can only hope that someone will reconsider this decision. Lets try to keep some decent shows on the air, PLEASE!

  1. I'm from Germany and just started watching Guiding Light a few months ago. I heard of the show on the internet (Otalia) and haven't missed one episode since. I'm neither a lesbian nor am I bisexual but I have to admit that the Otalia s/l is one of the best told lovestories I have ever seen also due to the incredible acting of Crystal Chappell (I have never seen acting on such a level on a daily soap). Nothing against daily soaps but normally the actors are not the best (to say the least)

I think it's really sad, not only because I've grown fond of some of the characters but also because of its long history and tradition (72 years and they just cancel it like that?

  1. I think it's sad that cbs and the rest of the the networks are going to let go of a good shows because the rating are down. Everything is down. so why don't we let more people lose there job. I have watch this show forever . Soaps are part of the our long standing history. They are like a on going book that change, repeats itself, and give you drama that not your own. I'm about ready to get rid of my cable all together. I feel like, we as a consumer have no voice. So why give these company our money.

Bring back the Bauers... quit with the whiny story lines... give these talented actors some meaty material and let them run with it! BOO to CBS and this decision to run some other crap in the time slot. Watch out As The World Turns... you are probably next :(

  1. Please do not take Guiding Light off, we have waited so long for Phillip to return. This is the only soap that I watch, My heart is broken. Try new writers or a new time slot, just don't cancel the show. I have watched so long that I feel almost like the actors are a part of my family. Say it ain't so, don't let it go.

  1. I HAD been watching this show for 40 years until they went to the new way of taping and it is so bad, I have a hard time bringing myself to watch it. I can't hear much of the dialogue and the video is rather amateurish and makes me think they are using a home video camera. Now, if they had went to HD INSTEAD, they would have improved things. I just wonder how many other long time viewers have the same issues. I HAVE a bunch of shows dating to last year yet to watch, but I don't know if I will ever get around to it. I love the characters and the actors and most of the storylines, but sheeeshhh..I don't know why they are canceled, but I can guess.

  1. So sad...an end of a soap opera era...mom & I used to watch this together when I would get home from school (back in the days of the original Alan Spaulding and his nemesis Roger Thorpe). Nice to see others share the same experience. Mom is gone now and so will Guiding Light be as it will be shelved with the television archives. Thank you to the wonderful actors and the writers of Guiding Light of yesteryear. I will always have the fondest of memories.

  1. OMG! I'm devastated! I look forward to holidays, vacations, and yes sick days so I can enjoy seeing an episode of Guiding Light. GL watching was passed down from my Grandmother. The memories of our time spent watching GL are precious to me. I'm very disappointed. Remember the Mallot and Harley romance. Now those were the good days of Guiding Light. I have stuck with GL even through the horrible Reva cloning episodes. This is very disappointing news.

  1. I am so glad my mom and grandmothers are no longer around to see the end of Guiding Light. They watched for years and got me hooked. I have been watching for about 28 years faithfully. This show has been the last connection I had to my mom and both my grandmothers. So many actors have gotten there start on this show. I guess there will be another daytime talk show that will take it's place. The only thing we need more than another talk show is another reality show!

  1. I remember watching the soaps on the old National set in the parlor. It took up a little space (it was small) in the corner, so I had to squeeze together with my siblings to watch a show. I used to burn my self on the exposed steam heat pipe next to the tv in the winter when the heat was on. In the summer the pipe was nice and cool.
    I hate tv now, so.

  1. I will miss Reva, Alan, Rick, Buzz, Jeffery, Josh and all the rest of Springfield, USA. Some where in my house I have a picture of my Great Grandma, my Grandma, my Mom, & me watching the Guiding Light. That would be 4 generations watching this ONE show. They would tell me how they would listen to it on the radio. I recently had my daughter and my Great Grandma and Grandmother are gone now, but my mom, myself, & my daughter watch. Talk about 5 generation. That is just WRONG!!!!!! Just WRONG!!!!! If the network would try putting the Guiding Light on @ 12:30 just when every office goes to lunch instead of @ 10:30 in the morning when everyone is working they may get more people. But now a days CBS Network people don’t care about the 2 million people who do enjoy there show.

  1. WOW. I had heard rumors recently that the Guiding Light might get cancelled. I just started watching it this past year. I like the chemistry all the characters seem to have. Just when it appeared as though things were really starting to heat up in Springfield the plug is pulled. I certainly hope some other avenue is found to continue the show. I believe the show has a very good cast and very professional actors and actresses. The only thing I noticed about the show I didn't like is that not enough air time was given to all the story lines. There would be times when the characters of Remy and Christina wouldn't be seen for long periods of time where as the writers would focus almost to much on the same characters. ialmost made the show seem somewhat

  1. Yes, I will miss it. The cast are all superb actors. They feel like family. It is too bad that the majority of the people watch the smutty soaps and keep the ratings up. When we finally see a fantastic group of people taking on normal daily lives, CBS thinks that they have to follow the saying, "majority rules". It is a tasteful enjoyable storyline. Very sad. Hope CBS reconsiders.

  1. I will absolutely miss it. I have watched it for many years. 32 years every day and 15 years before that when it was a 15 minute soap on summer breaks from school. I am grieving. It was something my mother and I shared, and then my daughters and I. I have taped it for the last 25 or so years.

  1. I can not believe The Guiding Light has been canceled! I am 34 years old and have been watching this soap since I was 4 yrs. old. My mother never missed an episode. I do not watch any of the other soaps. Guiding light to me is like coming home. My 9 year old daughter is also sad to see this soap go. She has been watching with me since she was a baby. Even when I have things to do around the house, I turn every T.V. I have (4) on to Guiding Light so I can at least hear what is going on. What will replace GL anyway? Probably some lame talk show or game show. I never thought I would see this day come! SOOO SAD! :(

  1. I am sick to my stomach. This historic show has brought so much to millions of viewers. I can only hope that CBS will reconsider this terrible decision. I have never been polled. How can the ratings truly show an accurate number of viewers when not all are polled? I pray that this does not come to fruition. Please do not cancel Guiding Light! CBS and Proctor and Gamble are making a HUGE mistake.

  1. I am SHOCKED by this news! I can not believe CBS is taking the longest running show off the air. I agree the show lagged over the past few years, but lately, with Phillip's return, there's a new energy to the show. Surely CBS could give this a little more time. 72 years deserves more turn around time! I have fond memories of watching this show with my Mom when I was growing up. My mom has passed on and over the years I've found comfort and great memories in continuining to watch this SOAP. I am just so saddened and disappointed by this news.

  1. Three generations of women in my family have watched Guiding Light. I am still holding out hope for Josh & Reva to get back together. I hope there is still time for CBS to reverse their decision. Maybe, if ratings go up in the next few months, there is still hope. After all the anticipation of Phillip coming back, it seems strange that the show is being cancelled.

  1. I have watched since Papa Bauer, Bert Bauer, Mike Bauer, and Ed Bauer were on this show. The writers don't know how to write a decent story line these days. The new filming format is for the birds. If they went back to the basics with the new Bauers -- Rick and bring Michelle back -- maybe the show could hang on longer. Reva always keeps things hopping, but I was oh so confused when they had her get pregnant. So many more things she could do. I don't know what I will do without it and kinda makes me scared for the only other soap I watch, ATWT, since it seems to be going the same way with story lines and filming format.

  1. Can not believe it! My grandmother use to listen to it on the radio, then switched to TV, my mother watched it until she passed away and I remember it being in back ground and watching it with both of them as a small child as I still do and think fondly of them. This March while in Universal studios, they were filming a couple of days and I got to see some of them. What a treat for me! Thanks to the many years!

  1. I AM 73, listened to GL on the radio and have watched it since its inception on tv. They keep those horrible reality??? shows on tv because they are cheap,
I have been noticing they seem to have been making people on the shows happy, getting together , but NO matter who they put together it will never sooth my sadness over Josh and Reva being over. I assume that is why Phillip has returned, they only have to pay him for a short while, and to ty=ie up loose ends.. It does prove that the capability of writing interesting story lines are possible, but they had to wait for the demise of GL to get any kind of good writing, HOW SAD., I have also watched ATWT's since it started also, they can take that off first , It has nothing to do with what it was even 15 years ago

  1. A friend that knows that i have watched this faithfully since I was a teenager just called to tell me this. CBS has failed Guiding Light not the other way around. The writers sabotaged the show by destroying Reva and Josh, killing off Gus and writing out the families that the show was based on like the Bauers....when you take away what the fans love and don't really give then anything in return how can you expect the show to perform well in the ratings. I often think about what has become of all the great characters of the past on this show. They don't even update you on their status anymore. Such a shame.....

  1. Please, please, please do not cancel The Guiding Light! I have watched this show since I was five, and I'm 60 years old. The recent changes have not helped the show. I know the audience has declined because of the changes, moving the show away from the stages, but I am so enjoying having Philip back, and seeing Mindy again at the reunion was so much fun. i really enjoy Cyrus, too. Sponsors, please don't give up on this show. There must be something we can do????? Won't you reconsider?

  1. I will be sad when the Guiding Light comes to an end. I remember listening to the soap on the radio and also when it was on TV for 15 minutes with Search for Tomorrow on for the other 15 minutes. Virtually I have been a fan all my life. I tape the Guiding Light every single day and then I watch it in the evening when I can enjoy one of my favorite soap operas.

  1. I am truly saddened and shocked by this news. I have been watching for several years and I think this writing and acting on this show is unmatched. The recent Olivia/Natalia storyline has had some of the best scenes I've seen on daytime in years! Crystal Chappell is absolutely amazing to watch. I think the CBS folks should go back to the board room and figure something out, because this seems kind of ridiculous.

  1. Life is so strange...I had stopped watching the soaps and then my Mother broke her leg and I had to be with in arms reach of her and I got hooked again. Springfield had become this mini-vacation of mine, away from my kids growing up, my husband dying and still taking care of my bedridden Mother...who loved her soaps...ATWT and Guiding Light. I loved the Christmas special...I love it when you would put in something of humor like an old movie.I didn't like were you were trying to take Olivia and I wouldn't watch on those days.I think because when I lost my husband there was a very sweet woman who became my lifeline for awhile.

  1. If CBS is taking Guiding Light off why did they have to take April Fool's Day to announce it? CBS is making a big mistake. I will be 63 years old in August and I have watched and listened to Guilding Light ever since I can remember. When I was a little girl we never had a television set. My mother and I couldn't afford to buy one but we had a radio. We would listen to the stories and then when they moved to television we would go to neighbor's houses to watch them until when I got in high school we got our first tv set. My mother is gone now but I still watch them and tape them every day. Please don't take the Guiding Light off the air.

Posted by Jacquelyn April 2, 09 01:43 AM
  1. Please don't take the Guiding Light off. We don't need any more reality shows, judge shows, comedies or talk shows. Everybody is not alike. All of us don't work. What about senior citizens that stayed home all day and like to look at their soap operas. Yes, it has changed but what else has been on television as long as it has? If you take it off then the other shows will go off. What will people do if they don't have Victor to look at? Watching soap operas is how some people make it through the day. The way the economy is now we need a relief and a break from worring about money by watching the soaps. Please leave it alone.

  1. How can they do this? The longest running show! Just because the age group that watches the show is 55 or so. So does that mean we are worthless too? I started watching this show because as a hairdresser it was what my clients talked about in my chair so I had to see what all the buzz was about. I got hooked. I feel like they are killing off family. So, it got a little lame every now and then...but come on do they have to cancel? They just brought Phil back and I waited years for that! If they really do this I don't think I can bring myself to watch CBS again.

  1. LIke others who have commented , Guiding Light has become a generational experience going back to the beginning with radio and my mother and grandmother and now my children. Even though we live all over the U.S. we still keep our "guiding light " bond as well as our traditional sense of family. Yes , the story lines have become ridiculous, and the camera angles in these atrocious outdoor sets are only rivaled by the bad writing, but someone with money could totally bring this show back from its grave and have such a fertile back story to work with. And now that Grant Aleksander is back, it seems a shame to pull the plug for more hideous game shows and reality TV.

Thank you, Josh and Reva, for the "never give up on love" attitude you've given to all the fans. Reva your tears have inspired, and consoled me, at times when you would never know when they were needed for me to shed. Your smiles have smiles are contageous, and all your wild and crazy actions have shown the true charactor of the one and only REVA SHANE! thank you for bringing her to life for all of us to know, and love.
Joshua, "BUD", your walk beside Reva, has been a heart riden, heart breaking, jouney in time....I know before September 18, 2009, you both will be together throughout time in our minds and hearts........ALWAYS.
To our Phillip, now we know why you answered our cries. for you to come back, to let us share you once more. Your charactor has carried the show for many years. the one who will be the strong, with heart ,Spalding....the man of the hour, all the time. Your have given us, the fans, a great blessing, by coming back to the show......Thank you is not enough to say. Thank you, Grant Alexander, for giving us, Phillip Spalding, to know all these years. You were terrible missed when you were gone those years...and so welcomed back, when we seen you. (Some in Springfield, were not ready for you...but we, the fan were) I hope you will let us all know if you will be directing, once more on ,ATWT. Or if you will be on the acting side again. I truely, haved loved knowing your charactor, in my life. Your acting ability is beyond measure. Thank you. God bless you.
All the actors on this show, are incredible. Thank you so much.
You will all be missed in my life. I have felt today as though I have read the most shocking obituary ever. As though I have lost 20 good friends, all at one time.
I'm hoping it may all be changed before September, but if not , I thank you all for the many hours your have spent with me, in my lifetime. For I have truely enjoyed, spending my time with all of you.

I wish I could come and visit with all of you, and meet you all, but it is a dream never to come true for me...so I send you all a great big hug, and a heart felt "Thank you" from me to you all.
May God bless the rest of your lives, as you have blessed all of us, in ours.

My grandmother got me hooked long ago and I would rush home from school to see the last half hour. Thank god for DVR or I wouldn't see it at all because they dont show it on Soapnet. Now a mother myself, my 3 year old daughter enjoys the open theme she calls "Me Love" and even has it downloaded on her mp3 player. This show will be thoroughly missed by so many. 1. CBS has definitely made a mistake here. Guiding Light has spent the last year and a half rewriting the look and feel of daytime drama, and at the same time getting back to the basics of good emotional storytelling. There's not a space alien or mob figure to be found in Springfield nowadays -- just the human drama of love in all its incarnations.

CBS picked the wrong moment to pull the plug on a program poised to reenergize the genre. With some luck, Soapnet or some other network will reap the benefit of CBS' mistake.

It gives me a sense of a connection to tradition -- something that lasts. I realize the ratings show a decline in the number of viewers, but to me the fact that more than two million people tune in every day and feel a connection to this show, its characters and actors is not to be taken lightly. It's true that the show has had some problems in recent years, but it was just coming together again. Maybe another network will give it new life.

This is the one constant in my life that helped me through so many difficult times in my life. I don't feel it is the show but changing times and whatever CBS chooses to replace Guiding Light with will not do any better in the ratings. People have watched this show for years. I am devastated beyond words and I feel the show has the best writers and actors of all of Television. I hope so much that CBS will reconsider this terrible mistake. This is one of the few things I look forward to every single week day. I will stop watching all CBS shows in support of the best Television show ever!

I remember when my mother used to watch it on TV for 15 minutes right after Search for Tomorrow. Don't end a program that's been on for over 72 years... rethink on this... it obviously sold the viewers. You're making a mistake!!!

We would call each other and say did you see what Allen did , do you really think Reva is dead or Back when Mike Bauer was on. Heck my Husband even watches it when he can , and there are very few shows we both like. You so often hear about all this Family togetherness , and spend time talking to one another . Then a new cable channel came along, and put it on their line up. I was thrilled after about 15 years of not having access to the show at all, now to have the rug pulled out i am heartbroken. I have not missed a day in the last 2 years of it. I sure hope it does get picked up SOMEWHERE!

  1. I HAVE WATCHED GUIDING LIGHT FOR OVER 40 YEARS, WITH MY MOM AND
MOTHER-IN-LAW. I AM REALLY UPSET THIS SHOW IS BEING TAKEN OFF CBS.
PLEASE DO NOT PUT A NEW TALK SHOW ON (MOST ARE NOT INTERESTING),
AND I AM SICK OF GAME SHOWS. I HAVE BEEN HOME FOR THE LAST 2 YEARS,
BECAUSE I BROKE MY HIP AND WATCHED THIS SHOW. IT TOOK MY MIND OFF
MY OWN PROBLEMS. I HOPE SOMEONE LIKE SOAPNET PICKS GUIDING LIGHT UP! I HOPE THIS IS NOT A START OF ELIMINATING THE SOAPS! WE ALL NEED SOME ESCAPE!

  1. I can not believe this, My Mother listened to this on radio when I was young,
What a shame to do this with such a long time running show, I am 72 and have listened and watched it as well. Why take it off?
I still work and I watch it almost every day.

  1. I'm heartbroken for the genre, for the cast, the crew, and the fans. With clearly ZERO support from CBS over the past few years, I've heard that Ellen Wheeler and the production crew and cast worked extreme hours, took HUGE paycuts and did whatever they could (as seen by the new format) to keep the show on the air, and they should be applauded for their ingenuity and effort, not cut off the air without a second glance.

  1. I too have watched this show for years! When I was home sick from school I watched it (along with Secret Storm, Love of Life and Dark Shadows!) The best GL was with Roger Thorpe, Holly, and all of those people. When Michael Zaslow passed away it was very sad. And now that this show is going off the air, this I must say is also VERY SAD. There needs to be some kind of major celebration for this television, and radio (before TV) icon. They have to do lots of clips too, of the older Bauer clan etc... Rita, Ed, the whole gang. And Roxie Shayne - Bring her back too :)

kid. i feel that these actors are a part of my life. They are all so talented and
seem like nice people in real life. I wil miss reva, buzz, mallet, frank and of course
even alan spauding. god bless all.

  1. I have watched GL for many years. I started watching with my mother when I was just a young girl, I am now 52 years old and watch with my daughter, she is 30 and has been watching for a long time as well. We will both miss GL very much and are very saddened with the cancellation news. I hope before the Light goes out for the last time we will see some of our favorites come back, ie Ed Bauer, Hope, Michelle and Danny, maybe if we saw more of the core family the show would not be in such trouble.

  1. Type your comment here...I will surely miss it! And I really hope I don't have to. I have been watching this show for over 30 years! I have stopped watching other soaps I watched regularly when The Guiding Light switched to the same time as these soaps. The GL has always been my favorite and is the only one that I really care about. I think GL got a bum wrap when that stupid Dr Phil show took their 3pm spot and bumped them to the 10 am spot. I still watched at 10 am because I do not work and could, but many of the loyal fans at 3 pm probably didnt get that luxury. What really ticked me off, is that when Dr Phil's 3 pm spot was preempted,
his show took over the 10 am spot and screwed us loyal GL fans again. wat

  1. I am devastated by the announcement that the Guiding Light is being taken off the air. This show has been part of my life since I was 3 years old. In so many ways the people on the show are more like family than my own. I live 1/2 across the country from where I grew up. I have nothing to remind me of my childhood left except the Guiding Light. My daughter's and I tape it and watch it everyday.
I can't believe that they are not taking more advantage of Phillip's return. Grant Alexander looks amazing, I remember him when he played Phillip in high school, he looks as good now as he did then. I remember Roger Thorpe, greatest character ever. I even Remember when Kevin Bacon played Tim McIntyre, I don't know what I will do without the show it is the only staple in my life. I feel as if someone died. I hope they reconsider. With all of this viewer out -cry, I hope that they reconsider.

  1. Guiding Light has a lot of people who follow the show every weekday. Please don't leave us fans in the lurch like this. The storyline of Reva and Josh was so timeless. Looking in on these feuding families and their troubles made mine not seem so bad. I feel like I know these characters, and they have been a part of my life for decades. You took some steps to modernize and bring this soap into the 21st century, and you should be applauded for this. The anwer is to "reincarnate" this show online, on cable, or on digital tv stations. Please don't let this wonderful story die. There is a very good reason why this soap has lasted for so long.

  1. It sadens me greatly to hear that Guiding Light is leaving us. I have watched this soap as long as I can remember and I am over 60 years old. I tape the show while I am at work and watch it as soon as I get home, living alone it's almost like going home to family.
I wish you would reconsider and let the show continue.

  1. I HOPE THAT YOU GET ENOUGH FEEDBACK ON NOT TO CANCEL GUIDING LIGHT. I CAN NAME A COUPLE OF SOAPS THAT ARE OVER RATED AND GUIDING LIGHT ISN'T ONE OF THEM. SO PLEASE RETHINK THE IDEA TO CANCEL IT. NOW THAT PHILLIP IS BACK IS A VERY BIG PLUS. THANKS

  1. I have watched the show since I was in high school -- when Roger Thorpe fell off the cliff, and then throughout college till now. I rearranged my class schedules to watch it. When I go on trips, I tape it. When I come back, it's marathon watching to get caught up. It airs on two different stations where I live, one at 10 a.m. in Philadelphia, and the other at 3 p.m. in Salisbury, MD. If it gets interrupted, I can watch it later. I can't imagine it not being on. I realize it's struggling in the ratings, but CBS please reconsider keeping it on. All the other soaps owe GL a lot of gratitude. It was the first one on TV. If it wasn't for GL they wouldn't be on now!

guiding Light off. It is very good and the chartchers are funny ,has good sense of humor , and they touch the lives of millions. I don't understand why they are taking
Guiding Light off. They all play there parts very well and each of them add their own touch to the show.Isn't there some way to continue this soap. I't s the best!!!

  1. What a shame. I have been watching this show for over 30 years. I DVR it and watch in the evening. The show seemed to go downhill after they took off the characters of Jonathan and Tammi. I also did not like the changes in the sets. But, I will truly miss Guilding Light. If this show can go, what next? The world will not be happy until everything we watch on TV is an exploiting reality show. How do they know that the ratings are down? Why not ask us the viewers what we want to watch?

PLEASE DON'T CANCEL GUILDING LIGHT. CBS DAYTIME WILL NOT BE THE SAME IF GUILDING LIGHT ISN'T THERE. I HOPE GUILDING LIGHT WILL STAY ON. PLEASE PLEASE RECONSIDER.

  1. You just can't take this show off the air because I have watched the guilding light since I was a small child . When me and my brothers was little my mother wtched this show and we knew not to worry her with anything while she was watching the guilding light, it was the rule. When I got older and got married I too did the same thing. So as you cane see this is a part of my life and it is a lot better than what is going on in the real world now , so please don't take this show off .
PLEASE, PLEASE , PLEASE THINK ABOUT THE GOOD OF THE SHOW AND LIFE AND WHAT IT HAS DONE FOR EVERYBOBY AND STILL DOING .bradley

  1. I started watching GL when I was third grade. My grandmother got me hooked. I was a latch key kid and I really enjoyed coming home the same faces everyday. I was product of divorce before it was in fashion so it was nice to watch families that were even more unusual than mine.
I remember Phillip when he had a mother, Elizabeth and her lover Mike (a Bauer - the orginal family that I remember) I even remember Bert Bauer and her final episode.
I remember when Phillip and Beth were in high school with Minday and Rick. I couldn't believe it when Beth (not the orginial by the way) and Rick married in more recent years.
I remember the events that transpired between Holly and Roger and I remember when Roger.
One of my favorite characters was Vanessa. I remember when her Daddy had to get her out of jams.
I loved the story line between Buzz and Jenna. They seemed an odd match but also very much in love.
Then there's Reva and all her varied stories with Bud without Bud, dead, as a ghost, as a princess with a prince for a son, as a remade clone (that was an odd storyline) and now with another baby, wow.
I have shared the story with my grandmother till she died, my husband when he came along, with my mother when she retired and now with my own children.
I have to say in the last few years something changed in the shooting of the show. It doesn't seem to flow as smoothly and the outdoor scenes have seem stilted. I don't know what changed? Writers, budget? But it was better, in my opinion in years past. But I still got excited when I saw Phillip reappear in an ad online. I happen to be home one morning to actually see him and it did take me back
The way GL has been able to keep actors and have them come back is impressive and exciting to watch. I really feel like I know the characters.
It is sad to see it go. I will miss it. I have watched for probably 35 years. How many things can you say you have done for that long, not many.
Thank you Guiding Light for the memories.

  1. I can't believe the show is cancelled, I have watched for over 25 years. Since it moved to morning I record it everyday and watch it at night. I am hoping is is picked up by another station. I will miss the characters I have come to know over the years of watching. The show could have alot more story lines in the future since adding some of the younger cast. I hope they don't replace it with another show like Dr. Phil, which I don't watch since they traded time slots. Good luck to all the cast members!!

Its only fair we dont buy any products of any commercial shown during the time a replacement show airs... EVER. Keep GL what ever it takes. It just takes some one with a good way of thinking to make it work.

  1. I have been watching Guiding Light for many years...It's the only soap on TV that isn't just beautiful men and women taking their clothes off, but actually has several plots going at the same time. It's a shame that TV has to fill a special demographic spot of 18 to 49 year olds or the show is a failure. Years ago, that particular demographic stayed home and watched the soaps but today have careers that take them out of the home element. There are other demographic groups...those over 50 perhaps?... that do enjoy the show and watch it regularly..I am one of those people. You are very discriminatory in your choice of viewers!

  1. I have been watching Guiding Light for many years, and it seems to be the only one on TV that still shows how important family life should be. It shows how good family sticks together through bad times and good times, and right now with our economy and the world problems as they are, it was good to turn on GUIDING LIGHT and be able to see these actors who have become so much a part of our life. Even though one knows they are acting a part, they are so good that it gives all of us some comfort in being able to be able to escape our own problems, and they show us through their problems that we can work out ours.

  1. Got my start watching GL with my mother back in early 70"s. It has been a show that I watched some and then went to school and sort of lost track. Then got my first job and got to see some episodes again to get caught up and then later recorded all the eposides that I would miss during the day. The last two years I have not worked and have watched about every day. I did not like the story line with some of the characters, but it was turning back around. I will miss GL as so many others will.
