'SYTYCD' There is a butt

Some thoughts, in no particular order, on tonight's derriere-filled "So You Think You Can Dance." And please chime in with your own!

1) I had a sudden realization tonight: In 30 years, Miley Cyrus is going to look and sound exactly like Mary Murphy. "Hannah Montana" fans, think about it.

2) I enjoy Mia Michaels' French-poodle routines more than I enjoy her electrocuted-zombie routines.

3) I actually thought that waltz was cheer-worthy in its loveliness.

4) The most successful dances on this show tend to be the ones that convey deep emotion. Tyce D'Orio's Broadway routines this season have been cute and clever, but emotionally flat. Does that put his dancers at a disadvantage?

5) It's tricky to choreograph a dance to Carmina Burana. Somehow the music overshadows anything that's happening onstage.

6) Melissa and Ade seem the couple to beat. Who doesn't love a naughty ballerina?

    - That would be me. No denying she's very talented, but unfortunately there's something about her that really irks me. Maybe it's the way she plays to the camera...I don't know. I'm a big fan of Randi and Evan. They know how to deliver a performance!

  1. I'm a a big fan of SYTYCD, but this season seems to be lacking. Last season/season 4 had so many dynamic dancers that I found it hard to watch any of the the top 10 be eliminated. The choreography last season was incredible and there were some numbers that left me speechless. I managed to get tickets to the live show at the Agganis Theater in Boston so I could be mesmerized by these dancers all over again.

This year, I'm still waiting for something to happen. There are a couple of dancers who devinitely have potential, but they choreographers aren't helping them break out as the "the couple to beat". Too many dancers are just playing it safe and it's getting boaring.

  1. Yay, Joanna....been waiting for this! I agree that Ade and Melissa are the front runners in the competition so far. Do think Evan and Randi's Poodle Butt dance was wonderfully danced and loved Mia's choreography - it was fun and not filled with angst.
Going out on a limb to say that I do not think Asuka is all that. She is more of a poser. Enjoyed the Paso Doble even if the music upstaged the dance but that is the fault of the choreographer for the selection. And speaking of choreographers.....think occasionally the dancers are faulted for what turns out to be poor choreography. Last week 2 of the 3 bottom couples danced to the same choreographer and felt they were in the bottom not because of how they danced it but for the dance itself.
Philip is amazing at his lock-hip-hop dance but is limited and falls flat when out of his element. He has his fans but don’t think he should be staying in the competition.

  1. I think this year is one of the best. I love the "ballerina". I think she is one of the best dancers on the show. Along with the blonde girl who did the ballroom last night...I don't know her name. The only one I don't really like is Oaska (sorry about the spelling).

I think the problem this year is the choreography. Dave Scott is terrible. I think Tyce has some sort of problem because he has been a nasty diva and it shows in his dancing. Napolean and Tabitha, who I didn't like last year seem to be one of the best hip hop choreographers. I also really like Mia Michaels, Mandy Moore and Sonia.

This is going to be a touch season, all of the dancers are realllly good.

  1. PS: Very funny-scary remark about Miley and Mary, Joanna. The first few seasons of Mary's "woo hoos" were uplifting and refreshing; the anti Simon "Scowell". It has since become annoying, ear piercing and shrill but the dancers live for it as a two thumbs waaaay up. Be glad we don't sit next to her!

And #4: I'm with you on your comments and thanks for mentioning Dave Scott - he is the choreographer from last week's 2 disasters. Hope he isn't invited back .

  1. It seems to me that there is much more fawning over the choreographers this year as though they can do no wrong, as others have noted. There are a couple of instances where dancers were blamed for not dancing well when it was really the choreography that was sort of unsatisfying (I'm thinking of any of Tyce Diorio's numbers so far, and also Shane Sparks last week).

Asuka can't get voted off fast enough as far as I'm concerned but I'm loving the new Kupono-Kayla pairing and I actually liked Brandon for the first time ever last night.

  1. I agree this years' choreography has been poor. A few have been consistently good. Louie from Dancing w/the Stars has been surprisingly good. The new woman from Canada was good. The one foxtrot and one Viennese Waltz we've seen have both been good, especially since they're ususally the most boring. But most of the hip hop routines have been bad. Same with Tyce's routines. The only good hip hop routine I can think of so far was Tabitha and Napolean's week 1 routine for Philip and Jeanine. I think the choreographers should take criticism when warranted, they're not children and they shouldn't be coddled.

  1. FYI - Dave Scott did not choreograph last week - that was Shane Sparks.

My current faves are Melissa and Ade and Evan and Randi and Kupono and Kayla.

  1. Kath - I totally agree with you re: Melissa. Maybe I'm just cynical but like when the judges are complimenting Ade or the choreographer - her nodding in agreement just seems excessive. It's as though she's saying (over-dramatically) "I totally agree! Really, I do! You're absolutely right!". And for whatever reason, it draws attention away from Ade or whoever they are talking about and directs it to her.

Aside from her mannerisms, I HATE the "naughty ballerina" image (not specifically with her, but just in general. Note - I am a ballet dancer myself).

  1. Up until Wednesday night, I thought this season had been great, but I wasn't impressed. I agree that a lot of the choreography hasn't been great this season. I usually really like Mandy and most hip hop routines, but lately all of the hip hop looks like the same old same old. Maybe we need some Wade Robson!

Philip needs to go home regardless if he is a nice guy. I don't really have favorites though - usually not until a few couples have been eliminated.

  1. You can not blame the choreographers if someone is eliminated, it is the dancers job to pull of the routine they are given and itf they can't they are responsible. Blaming the choreographer is just an exscuse!!1
