'SYTYCD:' Look out, ladies

Posted by Joanna Weiss July 15, 2009 10:02 PM

Wow - a lot going on in Wednesday's show, given the group routines, the new pairs, the solos, and the screaming. I'll try to process my thoughts one by one.

1) How tall is Cat Deely? Eight feet? Nine? When she stands next to the girl dancers, she looks enormous -- as if she's been zapped by some machine that Rick Moranis made.

2) I enjoyed the girls' Bollywood number more than the guys' African number. Not that I don't give the boys credit for trying. But the compete-for-the-women concept wasn't quite working for me, especially when the guys stood with their arms around each other and squealed, "Ladies? You better watch out, girls!"

3) Sometimes, I think my favorite dancer is Janette. It's not because of the solos -- I generally can't make hide nor hair of the solos -- but because she brings a spirit to her routines that I find infectious. Tonight's Nappytabs hip-hop number was much better than last week's, in concept and execution, and while Ade is fabulously funky, it was Janette who made it work.

4) Jason and Jeanine proved tonight that they had needed new partners all along. Much like Will last season, they were held back in the early rounds. Tonight, doing that amazingly complicated Travis routine, they were both terrific.

5) Um, Randi? What's with the wig?

6) Nigel cares deeply and seriously about the difference between the Viennese waltz and the regular waltz, which is astounding to me but is also something I love about this show.

7) Evan didn't thrill on the waltz, but his solo was kind of charming, and I think he'll be safe.

8) The solo I really remember, though, was Kupono's.

9) Has there ever been a television show that congratulated itself as much as this one does? I agree with most of the praise, I've written some of it myself, and yet. Sometimes I expect Nigel to reach beneath the judges' table and pull out a gold statuette to present to himself.

  1. Good morning Joanna,
Last night's show was a bit weird for me. Was thrown off by the odd mix-up of dances; pairings, groupings, solos and done so sporadically that it barely held my interest.
Think Nigel is still traumatized by the dreaded Russian Folk Dance. His comments on the Viennese Waltz seemed aimed once again at the choreography so sort of glad all the blame isn't falling solely on the dancers.
I agree about Randi’s wig but was it her choice or the show’s stylists? Regardless, it was one of the worst Paso Doble routines on the show – just weak and slow and awful.
Jeannine and Jason’s pairing was the match that should have happened from the beginning. They were brilliant and stood out as the best performance of the evening.
My prediction for tonight is that Randi and Evan are heading home. Evan’s solo was as you said, “charming” but he hasn’t been able to keep up with the remaining male dancers. Of the females, Randi had the worst routine of the night and not a good solo.
PS…According to her bio, Cat Deeley is 5’9”…then add those heels and that puts her at 6 feet.
And speaking of height….the judges commented on Evan’s lack of height throughout the competition yet as all the male dancers were lined up after the African dance, Brandon appears to be as short or shorter yet nothing is ever mentioned about his lack of height. Hmmmm.

  1. I didn't realize until last night that neither Evan nor Randi were the shortest. The shortest man is Brandon and the shortest woman was Janette. I think it's interesting because Evan and Randi come off as much shorter. I loved Debbie Allen's "You handled your big woman" comment

  1. It was really weird. The guys I liked as soloists had mediocre dances and vice versa. I *loved* Kupono's solo, but thought the Paso Doble was awful. (Though I liked Kupono much better than Randi) Jason was the only one I liked both solo and dance. Travis' dance was amazing!

For the girls, I liked Jeanine's solo best, but I thought they all kicked butt in their dances. Except for Randi. Both her dance and her solo seemed really weak to me. I didn't feel any chemistry between her and Kupono.

I think Randi should go home for the girls, but have no idea about the guys. I just think Jason should stay.

  1. Ms. Dingo, I too noticed how big and strong Brandon looks on his own but how teeny he seems if standing in a pack of other humans. And Randi, while wearing that wig, looked like that girl from The Big Bang Theory. I found that really distracting and was happy that Nigel noted that "the audience needs to recognize you."

Joanna, I agree about the self-congratulatory bent of the judge's remarks. I think they were laying it on thicker than usual last night. What gets me is why this oh-so-important-and-serious-contribution-to-the-world-of-dance show has such a silly name.

  1. I LOVED Evan's solo - it looked like it was truly choreographed and not just a bunch of tricks, spins, hair flipping and gyrations thrown together like all the others. I was entranced by him in the waltz too - he was elegant and calm and did a beautiful job with the lifts (the Seal song helped too - great choice). And he held his own in the African piece which was 100X more difficult than the simplistic choreography given the girls in the bollywood piece. Still, it was a big disappointment compared to last year's 5 Guys Named Mo (didn't Nigel choreograph that?). Travis' piece was phenomenal - you could tell he worked long and hard on it and the dancers were wonderful performing it. In the end, I voted for Janette who catches my eye no matter what she does. Even though she supposedly struggled with her hip hop piece, I can't even remember who her partner was - I was just watching her. I wish she would change her unflattering hairstyle though.

  1. Dingo, I totally noticed the same thing. Brandon (and therefore Janette) must be about the same height as Randi & Evan and yet no one ever called them vertically challenged.

I also noticed that Evan looked a little um, soft around the middle compared to the other guys!

I hope Randi and Evan go home. They are good dancers but not as good as the others. Jeanine & Jason were a revelation this week! Ade was awesome.

  1. I agree about Randi - while the wig was terrible and distracting, she demonstrated throughout the entire night that she is clearly not up to the same level as the other girls. Evan is adorable, but like Phil, he doesn't make a lot of sense outside his own style. But between last week and last night, I really think Jeanette might be the dark horse in this competition - I think her solo last night paired with the music choice made for a terrific and memorable performance (not to mention probably won her massive votes from the state of FL!). It might be a long shot - but I have a feeling she will be around for a while.

  1. Love Janette and Jeanine for their talent and heart. Kayla is probably the best technically. When Janette was in the red dress doing one of those tango, sambas - she was the hottest ticket in any season. Jeanine just seems like a sweetheart. Kayla she is so white, she is almost blue, "a bluey - whitey."

Will be hard this week after losing the dead weight last week.
