After a week of strong competition, the Beelzebubs took second place in NBC's a cappella contest "The Sing-Off." With typical good humor, true to their motto of "Fun Through Song," the Tufts University Bubs left the stage for the last time tonight singing the Animals' "We Gotta Get Out of This Place." Earlier in the evening, the guys got to sing with judge and Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger, as well as participate in an improvised vocal piece with Bobby McFerrin.

Also in the course of the long, two-hour finale, we saw a filler segment in which the Bubs went to spread holiday cheer to a bunch of elderly folks. We then got to hear judge Ben Folds tell them, "My theory is that you guys are what everyone prays that college boys are really like." Oh yeah, and we saw the boys change costumes like about 25 times.

The contest's big prizes -- $100,000 and a Sony Music recording contract -- went to Nota a six-man group from Puerto Rico. The show, executive produced by Newton filmmaker Sam Weisman, attracted a few celebrities on its last night. Spotted in the audience: Jack Black, Masi Oka, Peter Gallagher, and Josh Groban.

Reached after the show, Weisman said, "I think people thought the 'Bubs might win, but you never know." He also didn't know about the future of "The Sing-Off." "The decision on whether to bring the show back won't be made, or at least announced until after the new year," Weisman said.
