Here are a few of my early observations about the Golden Globe nominees in television (listed below), which were announced today. The statues will be handed out on Jan. 17, 2010, with Ricky Gervais as host:

      * I'm so pleased to see the inclusion of "Modern Family" in the best comedy category. This new series deserves the support. Now the GG's need to recognize some of the strong acting work on the show.

      * "True Blood" for best drama? Nice. Anna Paquin? Also nice. Now where are some of the supporting actors, including Alexander Skarsgard and Michelle Forbes?

      * Edie Falco, Jane Adams, Jane Lynch, and Chloe Sevigny... Great news.

      * Why is "Entourage" still haunting the best comedy list? The show is way past peak. That spot belongs to "How I Met Your Mother" or "Nurse Jackie."

      * Where are "Breaking Bad" and actor Aaron Paul? A serious omission, for sure.

      * Where is Jim Parsons from "The Big Bang Theory"? I'd put him before Matthew Morrison of "Glee," Thomas Jane of "Hung," and David Duchovny of "Californication." He's really something special.

      * I'm glad for all the "Dexter" love, but I wish the Hollywood Foreign Press Association would pay closer attention to Jennifer Carpenter, who plays Deb. She's extraordinary. So, by the way, are Elisabeth Moss and Christina Hendricks from "Mad Men" and Eve Best and Merritt Wever from "Nurse Jackie," none of whom are on the list.

      * Oh yeah. And NO "FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS"? Come on, HFPA. Wake up.

What do you think of the nominees?
