'24' to end?

Dammit Chloe, we're running out of time!

Yes, the tick-tock clock of "24" may go silent. According to reports in Variety, Fox and 20th Century Fox is on the verge of announcing that this is the last season of the series. Rumors have been afloat for a while, since the ratings haven't been great -- "24" comes in behind CBS and ABC shows on Monday nights -- and the show is expensive to produce. In August, Fox chief Kevin Reilly said, "It’s going to come down to a business decision. It’s not an inexpensive show on the network books and we also want to finish strong. This is not a show we want to prop up."

Fox's crowded slate is also working against "24," as The Wrap points out. With hits such as "American Idol," "House," and "Glee," the network doesn't have many open slots in which to build new scripted series. Stay tuned for official word from Fox.

As far as I'm concerned, the cancellation of "24" would not be a great tragedy. Or even a little tragedy. It's the classic example of a once-great show that stayed on the air too long after it had any new stories to tell. You? Will you grieve if Fox cuts "24"?
