Yes, an ironic headline. Because Sean Hayes' "Will & Grace" character, Jack, was so vivid, most people have always just assumed that the actor is gay, too. But the star, 39, has finally made the big official statement to the Advocate, a magazine that has been heavily critical of him over the years for not coming out of the closet.

"I am who I am," he says in the interview, which is here. "I was never in, as they say. Never." Hayes is defensive about his choices to the Advocate, and he remains private about his relationship history: "I believe that nobody owes anything to anybody. You are your authentic self to whom and when you choose to be, and if you don’t know somebody, then why would you explain to them how you live your life?"

He seems particularly glad to be post-"Will & Grace," as he prepares to star in a revival of "Promises, Promises" on Broadway. "Doing a sitcom, it’s a machine, it’s a factory," he says. "There’s nothing creative about it for an actor. There’s nothing new I’m going to discover for a character in episode 185. It’s just a pure punch-in, punch-out factory day job -- and it’s a wonderful factory day job -- but creatively it’s stifling."
