NBC News has reported that Tom Brokaw, a special correspondent for the news station, has been diagnosed with cancer. NBC News also reports that Brokaw said he and his doctors are encouraged by his progress and optimistic about the outcome of his treatment. Brokaw has worked at NBC News since 1966.
The former "Nightly News" anchor was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in August at the Mayo Clinic. This form of cancer affects blood cells in the bone marrow.
Here is an excerpt from Brokaw's statement:
“With the exceptional support of my family, medical team and friends, I am very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work and adventures still to come.”
