1994. 'Forrest Gump'
Ebert reflected on the power of Steven Spielberg's 1994 film, "Forrest Gump," and commented on its relation to contemporary society:
"One of the most remarkable achievements of "Forrest Gump" is the way the movie uses special effects to actually place its hero in the middle of historic events...Later on, thinking it over, I realized Forrest and his friend Jenny represent the American population in the last 40 years, stumbling along from one historical event to another, swept along by circumstances, sometimes rising to great heroic action, sometimes falling by the wayside. "Forrest Gump" is not only a great and magical entertainment, but the more you think about it, the more it reveals itself as actually, sort of profound. "
