Nancy Marchand
(aka Livia Soprano)

Actress Nancy Marchand played the role of Livia Soprano, Tony's mother, at left. Though Livia's relationship with her son and the rest of the family had always been tumultuous, his mother's abrupt death on the show left Tony's feelings conflicted.

Marchand died at the age of 71 at her home in Stratford, Conn., in June 2000. Read the New York Times obituary (June 20, 2000).
