THE "WIRE" MOMENT
6. Stringer Bell is gunned down
This series was filled with unforgettable moments and the deaths of major characters. But the ambush of Idris Elba’s Stringer Bell, the dealer who wore suits and studied economics, stands out. That David Simon was willing to kill off one of his best creations - a non-gangsta gangsta - near the end of season 3 in 2004 was a reminder of his commitment to realism. And seeing Stringer run desperately through his vacant development site, pigeons flying, was a moment of violent poetry. The irony - and there always was one on “The Wire’’ - was that Stringer had just incriminated himself on the wiretap and would have faced arrest.
