THE PRECIENT MOMENT
10. Smits Matt Santos is elected president on The West Wing
No doubt “The West Wing’’ was one of the best series of the decade, particularly during the early years when original writer-producer Aaron Sorkin was at his peak. But in retrospect, the triumph of Jimmy Smits’s character Matt Santos - which came during producer John Wells’s regime in 2006 - was a remarkable foreshadowing of Barack Obama’s election. An eloquent, young, minority Democratic candidate, married with two children; his more experienced running mate; an older, maverick-styled competitor - these and many other parallels are still resoundingly striking.
