THE ACTING MOMENT
9. Tie! Sophie yells on In Treatment and Carmela yells on The Sopranos
The ’00s contained a lot of superlative TV acting, particularly since it was the decade in which cable TV came of age and ushered in quality scripting. Two moments, though, stand out for me. One is the bitter explosion by Edie Falco’s Carmela on “The Sopranos’’ at the end of the fourth season, when she breaks up with Tony at their vacation house on the Jersey Shore. The other is the plaintive, tearful eruption by Mia Wasikowska’s Sophie on “In Treatment’’ in 2008, when she says to her therapist, “Why can’t anyone ever tell anyone else the truth?’’ So emotionally raw, Wasikowska delivered one of TV’s best-ever performances by a teenager.
