11. THE SNAKE WINS

"Survivor"
First season finale, Aug. 23, 2000
"Season Finale"

The first season of most reality contests is usually the best. But when season one of "Survivor" culminated with a $1 million win for Richard Hatch, and a what-for speech by Susan Hawk, it was epic and unforgettable. Hatch had been something of a Shakespearean villain during his 39 days on the island of Pulau Tiga, using his experience as a corporate trainer to smugly manipulate the other players. He was cold and calculating. But, as Hawk explained during her righteous rant, he was a snake, and snakes have to win.
