Matthew Gilbert's TV-14 - memorable TV therapists

14. NUTS

Dr. Tracy Clark on "Ally McBeal," played by Tracey Ullman (not pictured)

Clark was insane -- not what you want from a therapist, but definitely what you want from a fictional therapist played by the relentlessly kooky Ullman. Upon meeting Ally, Clark told her to touch her nose with her index finger and whistle. When Ally did so and asked why, Clark said she needed to know that Ally trusted her. A proponent of smile therapy, Tracy urged Ally to come up with a theme song -- she chose "Tell Him" -- and tried to tough-love her into mental health. It was the blind leading the blind.
