Sacco's Bowl Haven
This is what Somerville looked like pre-yuppification. And this is what bowling alleys looked like before technology. A family-run business since 1939, you will not find an alley more authentic. No computerized cartoons taunt you about the 7-10 split you just got because there are no monitors here, just the score sheets with coupons from other local bizzes. The décor of this candlepin joint is fifties because it was decorated in the fifties.

Milky Way
The seven candlepin lanes at this intergalactic basement rock club are often occupied, so call ahead if you want to throw some spares during the spare time between bands. And get a big group together, because they charge by the hour here. This includes shoes, turkey.

Lanes & Games
This hulking block of a building on the side of Rte 2 has one floor with 34 lanes of candlepin bowling and one floor with 20 lanes of ten-pin. This is the type of place that they would show on Sunday afternoon televised bowling ...in the seventies. Florescent lights on the wall-to-wall psychedelic carpet could cause nausea if you're not prepared, but you'll feel like a little kid at a bowling birthday bash after you see the orange and burnt orange carpeted cartoon of balls knocking down pins on the walls. Lanes & Games also has the soda machine that dispenses the cup and crushed ice and mixes they syrup right there.
195 Concord Turnpike, Cambridge. | MBTA: Red Line to Alewife. Open 7 days a week 9 a.m.-midnight. 617-876-5533. www.lanesgames.com
Lucky Strike Lanes
DJs spin on weekend nights, all the sports games you need to know the score of are shown on the wall of televisions behind the bar, and vintage movie clips and local art are interchanged on the monitors above the lanes. This kind of distracts from the fact that there are 16 ten-pin lanes here, and the sinking comfort of the velvety couches doesn't really do much to reinforce that either. Basically this is where people who love bowling can drag people who hate bowling, and both parties can have a big ball.

King's
King's would make an acceptable backdrop for any Rat Pack movie if it weren't for the little kids chasing each other around the couches on the weekend, and the blacklight lanes with Knight Rider runner lights along the gutters. Okay, so maybe it's not that much like a Rat Pack hangout, but in addition to their ten-pin lanes, they have a huge retrofied cocktail lounge and restaurant with a small stage where Deano might have felt comfortable.
