Clubs and Nightclubs - Boston Uncovered
Pub Quiz: P.J. Ryan’s Pub You’ve got to pay to play here (5 bucks per team), but it’s worth it to participate in one of the brainiest pub quizzes around. Host Will Shepard is the perfect mix of educator and antagonist as he has no problem making fun of the stupidest answers. Located near Tufts, the crowd cheers “science!” — Thomas Dolby-style — at the announcement every time the regular science category comes up. It’s a good thing we joined a team of M.I.T. alums, or we never would have even placed.
First prize: $50 cash. Note: last place gets a round of shots, but don’t go trying to place last because if Shepard is onto you, he’ll award the shots to the second-to-last team.
Uncovered’s rank: First place. Remember, we had M.I.T. grads on our team.
Best trivia we learned: A shrimp has 10 legs.
Every Tuesday at 10 p.m. 239 Holland St., Somerville. | MBTA: Red Line to Davis. 617-625-8200

Useless Trivia: Porters Bar & Grill The soothing voice of former FNX morning personality Greg Wymer mixed with the playful categories he concocts make up for the forgetful waitresses. The regular categories include the seven-second solo, where you have to figure out what song he’s playing from a short instrumental sample, and the great debate, where you have to concoct a persuasive argument for a question such as “Which ‘Friends’ character would you kill off first, and why?”
First prize: $25 gift certificate to Porters
Uncovered’s rank: Fourth place.
Best trivia we learned: The name of the most popular Santana tribute band is Amigos.
Every other Wednesday at 8 p.m. 173 Portland St., Boston. | MBTA: Green Line to North Station. 617-742-7678

Stump! Stump! Pub Trivia basically has a monopoly on trivia games in this town, hosting almost 50 different games within the same corporate footprint around the city. The hosts are sometimes detached from the questions and appear uninterested, but the game itself is always high-quality. We recommend the one at Charlie’s in Harvard Square.
First prize: Varies from establishment to establishment
Best trivia we learned: The piccolo and flute are the only two musical instruments in the woodwind category that do not have a reed and are not made out of wood.
Check
www.PrimeTimeTrivia.com for nights and locations. Pop Quiz Team Trivia This quiz also takes place in too many locations to mention here. Put together by MCO Productions, they have some pretty clever hosts whose musical selections in between rounds are either funny references to the previous round’s questions, or clues for those answers. The one at Our House West is our favorite, except for/because of the fact that some guy came over to our table asking us if we wanted to buy an answer.
First prize: Varies from establishment to establishment
Best trivia we learned: The longest word in the English language that can be spelled on one row of a typewriter keyboard is “typewriter.”

Quiz Night: Matt Murphy’s Pub The funniest part of this trivia night is the buttons given to poorly placing teams — they feature headshots of the wait staff with disappointed looks. Host Aaron Ayscough is a chill guy, and this place gets packed to its 60-something capacity pretty early. We dig the picture round although it’s pretty dark in here, and tough to see if that was a picture of Huckleberry Hound or Droopy Dog.
First prize: A round of beers or a round of canolies, your choice.
Uncovered’s rank: Not applicable. We took off before the end of the night. We had tons of stuff to do in the morning, we swear.
Best trivia we learned: The little plastic caps on the ends of shoelaces are called aglets.
Every Wednesday at 10 p.m. 14 Harvard St., Brookline. | MBTA: Green Line D train to Brookline Village. 617- 232-0188
