A grand Discovery

DISCOVERY ENSEMBLE The dynamic chamber orchestra, led by Courtney Lewis (pictured), performs Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2, Bartok’s “Divertimento,” and Esa-Pekka Salonen’s “Five Images after Sappho,” with soprano Karin Wolverton. 3 p.m., Dec. 2. Sanders Theatre, Cambridge. 617-800-7588, www.discoveryensemble.com Jeremy Eichler

Pop & Rock

GRACE POTTER & THE NOCTURNALS Capping a solid year that saw the release of “The Lion the Beast the Beat” (which, to these ears, is their best album yet), the roots-rocking pride of Vermont will set up shop for two nights at the House of Blues. Trampled by Turtles, an electrifying outfit from Minnesota that rips bluegrass to shreds, will open both shows. Nov. 30 (8 p.m.) and Dec. 1(6:30 p.m.). Tickets: $32.50-$65. House of Blues. 800-745-3000, www.livenation.com

JOE FLETCHER & THE WRONG REASONS Au contraire: Everything is right about this barroom Americana band from Rhode Island. Fletcher and gang share the bill with Spirit Family Reunion, the rising acoustic ensemble that made a big splash at this summer’s Newport Folk Festival. Nov. 30, 8:45 p.m. Tickets: $10, $8 in advance. T.T. the Bear’s. 617-492-2327, www.ticketweb.com

REVEREND HORTON HEAT To borrow a title from an early song, the good Reverend Horton Heat plays what you might call “psychobilly freakout.” As in, rockabilly by way of punk rock and psychedelia with a bottle of bourbon in its mouth. It’ll be a perfect way to start the show for the headliner, X, the seminal punk-rock band from Los Angeles. Dec. 2, 8 p.m. Tickets: $25. Paradise Rock Club. 800-745-3000, www.ticketmaster.com

2 CHAINZ From Georgia, this Southern rapper rode a wave of hype after a few years of releasing mixtapes. His studio full-length, “Based on a T.R.U. Story,” finally came out this year. Dec. 4, 8 p.m. Tickets: $25-$39.50. House of Blues. 800-745-3000, www.livenation.com James Reed

Folk, World & Country

THE SOULJAZZ ORCHESTRA “Soul jazz” is more a statement of aesthetic sensibility than actual musical style for this Canadian outfit, which plays a high-test conglomerate of African, Latin, reggae, and American funk and soul elements. The band makes a point of changing things up with each album, and they’ll be showcasing their latest one, “Solidarity,” on Thursday. Nov. 29, 9 p.m. Tickets: $15. Brighton Music Hall. 617-876-4275, www.worldmusic.org

JACK INGRAM AND RADNEY FOSTER These veteran Texas singer-songwriters both have Nashville credentials — Foster as one half of ’80s neo-trad country resurgents Foster & Lloyd and later as a solo act, and Ingram more fleetingly in comparison. They come to town as a pair, forsaking bands for their guitars and an evening of song and story swap. Nov. 30, 8 p.m. Tickets: $25. Showcase Live, Foxborough. 888-354-7042, www.showcaselive.com

LYDIA LOVELESS Loveless recently played her record label’s 18th anniversary party in Chicago with a hellacious cold, and later posted on her website that not one person told her after the show that she sounded like Neko Case. Loveless coldless does, a bit, but when she kicks her country-punk maelstrom into gear, who cares? Nov. 30, 9 p.m. Tickets: $9. Middle East Upstairs. 888-777-8932, www.ticketweb.com

MARK EITZEL The indie rock band he fronted, American Music Club, is apparently no more (again), and he’s not that far removed from suffering a heart attack, but Eitzel perseveres and remains as deliciously gloomy as ever, as “I Love You But You’re Dead,” the lead-off track on his excellent new CD, attests. Dec. 1, 7 p.m. Tickets: $15. Johnny D’s. 888-777-8932, www.ticketweb.com Stuart Munro

Jazz, Blues & Cabaret

FRANCISCO MELA & CUBAN SAFARI Since arriving in the US in 2000, the ebullient Cuban-born drummer has become a favored sideman to Joe Lovano, Joanne Brackeen, and McCoy Tyner, among others, as well as a fine bandleader, as evidenced by this one, featuring alto saxophonist Uri Gurvich, pianist Elio Villafranca, bassist Peter Slavov, and conguero Miguel Valdez.Nov. 29, 8 p.m. Tickets: $25. Scullers. 617-562-4111, www.scullersjazz.com

REBIRTH OF THE THIRD STREAM The NEC Jazz Orchestra, led by Ken Schaphorst, pays tribute to the jazz/classical merger conceived by the great Gunther Schuller. The program will include pieces by Duke Ellington, Bob Graettinger, Leonard Bernstein, George Russell, and Steve Lacy, plus Schaphorst’s new orchestral arrangement of Ran Blake’s “Horace Is Blue,” featuring Blake on piano. Nov. 29, 8 p.m. Free. NEC’s Jordan Hall. 617-585-1260, www.necmusic.edu Continued...
