Beyond The Big Dig
About this project

What happens to the ribbon of land being created by the depression of the Central Artery may be the most important development decision to face Boston in a generation.

NORTH END

Parcel 8 map

Parcel 8

Area: 63,010 square feet (1.45 acres)

Bordered by: Surface Artery, Hanover Street, Salem Street, Cross Street, New Sudbury Street.

Master plan calls for: Open space, plaza with water feature, small community or arts building

Zoning: Recreation Open Space Subdistrict.

Notes: The master plan envisions this large area north of Salem Street as a "calm, neighborhood-oriented park space" with a major fountain to mask traffic noise. The zoning code says no structure on Parcel 8 may obstruct the "view corridor" from Tremont Street to the Old North Church.
