Big Picture on Vacation

The Big Picture will be on hold next week, since I will be out on vacation, so no posts next week, sorry (I know, I know, I'm probably missing out on some amazing Olympics photos!) Posts will resume as normal, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, starting August 25th.

Also, coming soon is a (slight) redesign. Don't worry, the pictures and their layout won't change, just a few things are in the works, including A) visible numbers for each photo, for easier reference, B) anchor links on individual images for easier linking C) fixing the old 'email-to-a-friend' bug D) easier access to archived entries (at top and bottom of pages), E) a proper blogroll F) a FAQ - now that I actually have a collection of frequently asked questions, and a couple of other minor tweaks. I really don't want to change much at all, just responding to some needed changes. And, since many of you ask, EXIF data will unfortunately not be included in this update. Mostly because it's not present in the images I have at hand. If I had it, I'd pass it along happily.

Again, thanks so much to you readers and commenters, it's been an amazing ride to date. 44 entries since June 1st, over 10,000 comments, and over 6 million page views... I'm still amazed, and honored to put these stories together, and watch where you all take them. See you on the 25th.

Enjoy the vacation; its well deserved. This is the first blog (I believe The Big Picture is a blog?) I've checked on a regular basis. The pictures are consistently breathtaking and do a great job of telling stories from around the globe. I'm fairly sure I absorb more information about current events from this site than I do from the news. Keep up the good work!

Alan, have a great vaca!

Think about this a little bit for the update:

1. Consider adding a little background info on yourself. How you got into photography? How you started at the Boston Globe? What you look for when selecting the pictures. Etc.

2. If permitted by the powers above, a link to a gallery of your own work.

Hello Alan: Hope you are enjoying your vacation, even if it's a staycation (not go anywhere and just stay home.)
On the internet, Google had posted PC Magazine article "The Top 100 undiscovered Web Sites." "The Big Picture" was listed. Your pictures that you have posted are gorgeous. All your readers must be pros as each one is better than the next.
My question is ........ Is there a way to subscribe to The Big Picture to receive the photos via email without having to subscribe to the Boston Globe? I live in the West and know of no one in the Mass area to be interested in Boston, of course, except for your Red Sox, and Celtics. Congrats on your Celtics win. Great job!
