Note from the author - some small changes
I've made a few changes to the layout of The Big Picture today, hoping to make the experience a little better for everyone. 1) Starting this week, all photos in entries will have numbers in the captions, and permalinks so it will be much easier to refer to an individual image in the comments, or by using a URL. 2) Archives and categories are much easier to find now, at the top of the page. 3) The layout of the comments has been tightened up a tiny bit, and the HTML cleaned up, so entries with more than a few hundred comments should load much faster now. 4) a few other cosmetic changes, but importantly, the size and layout of the images (the focus of the blog) has not changed. A(n) FAQ has also been written up, please let me know if there's anything missing from that.
Also, please let me know what you think of the changes - or if you spot any bugs in layout or display. Don't be shy (I know you're not). Thanks.
This blogger might want to review your comment before posting it.

"More Photos" link when there's no photos? bzzt.
Sweet changes...it's much easier to find things!
"An FAQ" is correct because the letter "F" begins with a vowel sound. Keep up the great posts!
I like the tweaks. A few nitpicks:
- Picture #1 is not numbered - probably not needed, but breaks consistency
- The number on the pictures might benefit from being smaller, so the black bar doesn't take up 2 lines when the caption is only one line long. Also doens't look that good with 3 lined captions.
- The "#" permalink at the end of the caption is distracting and may be better if a subdued gray (like the number) or alternatively, only show up when hovering over caption.
Just my 2 cents...
Thanks for establishing this site.
It is one of the few sites that I forward regularly.
The content was so spectacular, I was forwarding almost every one.
Now I just forward the RSS URL.

Hello there. I am a reader from Victoria, British Columbia. Your blog really stands out as one of my favorites from any media source. I am subscribed to your RSS feed via Google Reader and I am always pleased to see a new update. Keep it up, I'll keep coming back!
The permalinks are great. Could the older posts have permalinks too? There's one or two pictures I want to link.
First of all, hats of to this site! I think it's exceptional. You seem to amaze me with every new post. So, a big thanks!
In the other thread, someone mentioned PicLens. I don't know if you're familiar with it, but PicLens is an amazing photo viewing add-on for Firefox. You can see a high def video of what it can do at Vimeo:
http://www.vimeo.com/653047
It might possibly be the best framing for all the wonderful photos you keep posting time and time again. Apparently, it's also really simple to add to your site. You can read how to do that at
http://developer.cooliris.com/
Hope you find the time to incorporate this in the site. It would make it even better :)
Thanks again,
Edward
On the design (if your asking.. :) There's just two minor points, which may be personal taste: i think the comments link in the main index is on the wrong side of the collumn: for example in the London at Night post there's this big chunk of whiteness left of the text that looks.. empty.. like there is supposed to be something but it's gone for reasons unknown. Or it gives the feel the design is made for a much smaller text. Why not put the comment-link next to the permalink and let the text flow a bit wider (maybe with some margins)? Right now it's a waste of screen real-estate or a hint at a malfunction, or suggests bad content management or something.. I don't know what it is exactly, but it feels wrong.
The other thing is the More Pictures link, which is (imho) plain ugly (greyish with sort-of rounded corners and just below the sharp hard-black-on-white image box: it breaks the style). Ditch that greyish block and just have the link dead-center.
The rest of the site is perfect as ever, thumbs up! On my wish-list is still a HD mode for 1920x1200 (or 1600x1200) screens... but I admit that may be a bit too much to ask and for you a terrible mess to arrange with all the image-rights issues :)
I agree, the comments link feels wrong there. It looks like a browser render error.

This site is really amazing. I like it!
2 minor points:
1. The high light area goes out the range when the text is selected (mouse drag)in article.
2. The "xxx comments" on the top left of the page is a waste of space. Do most readers care about the ammount of comments at the time when they open the page? If not, that's a "noise".
Best Regards
Alan
I love this site! A blog I look forward to everyday... thank you.
Well, I like the old logo better. With the new one, it's too easy to miss the camera lens behind the text. Besides, Times Roman is not really well suited as a titling face.
I love your site and the revised design is great. One request -- any way you could add an option for a dark gray background? This might be particularly nice for things like your night-time view of London.
Permalinks to individual pics are a good idea.
This is a wonderful photo blog.
You are doing a great job.
Love the new design. Brilliant.
It 's still a great site, though the little changes you've made (just joking ! ). Thank you very much for your work.
Absolutely love this site.
Would love it even more if you could include the EXIF data for the shots. I understand some (insecure) photogs don't like to reveal their technique, but you could stay clear of them since the masters are typically more than happy to pass on this info.
Keep up the great work.
Cleaner look. Very nice. Keep up the good work.
However, disappointed you changed the "logo". I liked the old one with the words "The Big Picture" as etched letters on a lens... just like the old lens of (many many) years ago. You should bring that "logo" back...it says more of what this photo blog is about than the flat looking block text super imposed on a lens barrel.
Excellent quality, and provides a wide variety of areas of interest.
Keep it up.

I just have a simple comment.... I really hope that Boston.com maintains these pictures indefinitely. They are such a great resource of historical events that I hope to come across again sometime way into the future. This is the only site that publishes high quality, high resolution pictures and I hope it stays up for years to come. Thanks.
Your Web Site is really wonderful and I bookmarked it. Thank your for the hard work you must have put in to create this wonderful facility. Keep up the excellent work!
