Hurricanes, as seen from orbit
Hurricane Ike just rolled across Cuba, and soaked parts of Haiti - both regions still reeling from recent Hurricane Gustav. Ike appears to be weakening now, but is headed tward the Gulf Coast of the U.S., and may yet strengthen. The crew aboard the International Space Station was able to take a photo of Ike from 220 miles overhead last Thursday - one in a long series of great NASA photographs of hurricanes from space. Here are some of the best, from the past several years. (25 photos total)
Hurricane Ike was still a Category 4 storm on the morning of Sept. 4 when this photo was taken from the International Space Station's vantage point of 220 miles above the Earth. The season's seventh named storm was churning west-northwestward through the mid-Atlantic Ocean sporting winds of 120 nautical miles per hour with gusts to 145. A nadir view from the Space Shuttle Atlantis on Sept. 18th, 2006 gives a good look at the eye of Hurricane Gordon. At the time the photo was taken, with a digital still camera eqipped with a 28mm lens, the center of Gordon was near 37.5 north latitude and 46.4 west longitude moving west-northwest. The sustained winds were at 80 nautical miles per hour with gusts to 95 nautical miles per hour. (NASA) #

On Sept. 12th, 2003, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument onboard NASA's Terra satellite captured this true-color image of Hurricane Isabel northeast of the Lesser Antilles Islands. This view of Hurricane Felix was taken from the Earth-orbiting International Space Station (ISS) by an Expedition 15 crewmember using a digital still camera equipped with a 28-70 mm lens set at 28 mm focal length on Sept. 3, 2007 at 11:38:29 GMT. The ISS was located at the nadir point of 16.0 degrees north latitude and 84.0 degrees west longitude nearly over the coast of eastern Honduras when this image was taken. The sustained winds were 165 miles per hour with higher gusts making it a category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale. (NASA) #

This image featuring Hurricane Catarina was taken on March 27th, 2004 by an Expedition 8 crewmember on the International Space Station (ISS). The crew of the ISS acquired this excellent oblique photo of the storm just as it made landfall on the southern Brazilian state of Catarina (the storm has been unofficially dubbed "Hurricane Catarina"). Note the clockwise circulation of this Southern Hemisphere cyclone, the well-defined banding features, and the eyewall of at least a Category 1 system. (NASA) #
A look into the eye of the storm from space was provided by astronaut Edward M. Fincke as Hurricane Ivan approached landfall on the central Gulf coast Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 15th, 2004. This image of Hurricane Wilma was taken at 8:23 a.m. CDT Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005 by the crew aboard NASA's international space station as the complex flew 222 miles above the storm. At the time, Wilma was the strongest Atlantic hurricane in history, with winds near 175 miles per hour. The storm was located in the Caribbean Sea, 340 miles southeast of Cozumel, Mexico. (NASA) #
This view of Hurricane Epsilon in the Atlantic Ocean was photographed on Dec. 3, 2005 by one of the crewmembers of Expedition 12 aboard the International Space Station. While not a true hurricane, this image from September 4, 2003 shows a beautifully-formed low-pressure system swirling off the southeastern coast of Greenland, illustrating the maxim that "nature abhors a vacuum." The vacuum in this case was a region of low atmospheric pressure. In order to fill this void, air from a nearby high-pressure system moves in, in this case bringing clouds along for the ride. The image was captured by the crew of the International Space Station while the complex was over the southern Gulf of Mexico looking eastwardly toward the rising moon. At the time, Emily was a strengthening Category 4 hurricane with winds of nearly 155 miles per hour and moving west-northwestwardly over the northwest Caribbean Sea about 135 miles southwest of Kingston, Jamaica. Realmente é impressionante.
Como ja foi dito, é terrivel saber que ainda existem muitas pessoas que preferem acreditar que tudo surgiu de uma explosão. Que fenomeno é esse que pode criar tantas coisa tão magníficas? Ignorantes e incredulos que se acham inteligentes demais para querer dar uma explicação a algo tão perfeito, será possivel que vcs não conseguem ver que ha uma força maior, algo celestial, poderoso ao qual criou tudo que existe, inclusive vc. Acredite Deus existe, e vc não precisa o ver para crer, basta vc querer e poderá o sentir. Ele é como o vento, vc não vê, mas sente. Se quiser faça prova dele, pois ele não falha. Só tome cuidado pois com Deus não se brinca, ele é amor, mas tbm é justiça, não espere por momentos difíceis, como acontece em uma dessas tempestades par lembra dele.

I live in Houston but I was ok and with out power for 1 day. My sister had devastating danmage to her home. The vents on her roof were torn off letting water fill her attic. Only time before the ceiling cam down in the living room, dining room, kitchen, 2 kids rooms, and the garage. My sister and her family were not there but the neighbors got together and patched what they could before her family came back to find the damage.

Se tu está andando pela rua e tropeça numa pedra é obra de deus ou a culpa é sua por andar distraído sem olhar para o chão ? Párem de conclamar que deus é isso, deus é aquilo, e que tudo acontece por causa dele. Vão estudar coisas reais, vão estudar ciência, biologia, física e ler menos esse livro fantasioso que é a bíblia. E concordo com o Kevin que postou acima, o mundo só regride com essa pregação sem pudor, com essa falta de respeito para com a liberdade de escolha que temos de NÃO seguir essas 'idéias'. Pior é que pessoas desse tipo podem falar o quanto quiserem de deus, onde quiserem, em trens, ônibus, o lugar que for, se uma pessoa vai contra esse tipo de conduta e vai discutir porque não quer ficar lendo ou ouvindo pregação alheia, esses já falam que é perseguição religiosa ou coisa parecisa. Perseguição é o que eles fazem com esse radicalismo absurdo, essa falta de noção de que cada um tem seu espaço e que esse espaço deve ser respeitado.
A natureza funciona maravilhosamente sem nenhuma "cordinha" acionando maironetes, nenhum "ser sobrenatural" para comandá-la. É tudo NATURAL.
Triste e pobre daqueles que não têm a imaginacão para perceber a natureza na sua forma mais pura e têm que usar de um deus para explicar as coisas. Isso é pobreza cultural, pobreza mental. A natureza é complexa e independente de qualquer coisa.

I live in MagnoliaTexas, After 15 days with no power and alot of clean up ahead, We still feel blessed to have our belongs and health in tack. We slept in the closet with our 4 dogs the morning of the storm. I have never been so scared. I heard our large oak in front go down, I heard my neighbors fence getting pulled apart. The noise of the storm was so loud. hours later in the eye of the storm we let our dogs out and found a baby squirrel, we bottle feed him for 8 days, but when I had to go back to work he pasted on. We will never forget rocky or Ike.

hurricanes bring much needed rain to drought stricken places. they also make the ground more furtil every time they make landfall. they also push warmer air into cooler places. they also keep the heat energy from building up in the tropics. Many parts of the world depend on them for much of their rainfall.
Although hurricanes kill and destroy, that is NOT their main purpose!!!

I had lived in Texas City, texas from 1974 to 1989 went thru a couple of hurricanes hile i was there thats only 12 miles from Galveston now i live in the country about 175 miles from Galveston but I have to say if another one comes into galveston again at a cat 2 or more I will leave my house in the country and travel north. The sustained winds this far up were between 50 and 70 mph and they lasted from 3am to 12pm it was the longest morning that i spent in my hallway with 6 cats to keep me company. Had some water damage on the roof and my cielings but i count my blessings and my prayers go out to all the people on the coast. I can only say one thing to all the people that live near the coast leave when you here it is headed that way leave nothing is worth risking you life for nothing no pictures no old furniture grandma left you nothing.
