The short - but eventful - life of Ike

In its brief lifespan of only 13 days, Hurricane Ike wreaked great deal of havoc. Affecting several countries including Cuba, Haiti, and the United States, Ike is blamed for approximately 114 deaths (74 in Haiti alone), and damages that are still being tallied, with estimates topping $10 billion. Many shoreline communities of Galveston, Texas were wiped from the map by the winds, storm surge and the walls of debris pushed along by Ike - though Galveston was spared the level of disaster it suffered in 1900. I feel for all those who lost there lives and had to endure it as well. But why does it take sometjhing like that to make us feel mortal?I mean to actually have compassin for others, even just in passing?Shouldn't we finally attempt to trust a simple smile or hello, or for that matter put our selves out there to trust our own instincts and be curtious. If we loose that we loose all humanity.

We must be sad for all we are seen here but we must learn that the humans can not control the power of the nature. Only God can do that, if we just think that the humans need to keep the control over our lifes, IKE told that the humans will never be happy for ever, just a King with more power than the power of nature can let us sleep in peace, never been afraid that this happens again. This is what Jehova' s Kindom means for the humans. The best we can do is learn about that Kindom until it take place over the earth for the human's happiness.

The first thing I want to say is I'm very sorry for everyone's loss. All of us in some way or another has been affected by Hurricane Ike and other storms.Everyone is so involved with Galveston but Bridge City and the rest of the Gulf Coast was just as devastated. My dad lost everything he owned. Our childhood home is a total loss. F.E.M.A. is not helping them like they are Galveston. They are fending for themselves. There is still a lot of need. I know what they're going through we lost everything to Rita in 2005 in West Orange. We all need to help each other at times like these.God Bless Everyone!

I know what its like to lose everything. Being a victim of hurricane katrina, I realized that material things can be replaced. Keep praying and believing in God and everything will be okay. It is hard to pick up the pieces of your life. Be thankful that you are still here. A life cannot be replaced. God bless and keep praying!

The Lord God is still in control. May God bless everyone. Now is the time to get closer to the Lord. Pray for strength to make it through. Believe me he will give it to you. It's not the end of the world. All material things can be replaced but all of the lost lives can't. Looking at all of the photos and noticing all of the damage I know it may not seem like it but we have to be thankful. Thankful for just surviving which means that the Lord has something in store for you. Wait on your blessings. They will definately come! God Bless

I live in Orange and work for the Fire Department locally. We sat and listened to the storm and man was it a surprise the next morning, when areas of our town were just under water for blocks and blocks. We rescued around 30 - 40 people just in our town, nearby in Orange and West Orange and even Bridge City had many many more. The pics are all very much true and are not edited in anyway. It was bad and will take months and even years for some places to even start to get back to where they were. Thanks for all your prayers! Our volunteer fire department has even tried to raise money to purchase a boat for rescues after this storm!

We have a "snow bird" house just north of Galveston in Santa Fe. It was pretty much destroyed. Our Daughter and family also live there and lost theirs too.We spent a month down ther cleaning up the mess. We have "sky lights". In other words our roof is more than half gone. We're retired and can't do all the repairs. We saw the damage in Galveston and other towns. It's so sad t see every thing as we knew it over the years gone, but all family and friends got out OK and are safe. That's the important part. God Bless you all. to Wally, Thanks.Wilma from Illinois.Nov.3,2008

As populated as our world is getting and mans encroachment on nature continues to expand our changing weather patterns will continue to devastate our coastal regions. As unfortunate as it is for the residents of these areas isnt it about time someone took a look at the reality of what man is doing with his expansion of our coastlines and maybe pulled back just a little. With our ever changing enviroment can we really afford to build in tidal areas and then expect the goverment to bail us out because we have made a bad choice.

Being a SE TX resident with family from Crystal Beach to Bridge City - I would like to tell you something the media doesn't seem to be interested in now that there are no more exciting pics to take - FEMA was well prepared. Their plan seem to be to do as little as possible for these poor people. Flood insurance is refusing to pay because it was a surge - and it was - but private insurance cos are also refusing to pay because they say it was 'rising water'. These Texans did not wait for help, they immediately went to work salvaging, cleaning, etc., believing they would get some help. It has been heartbreaking to listen to their frustrations; disappointment in a government that is spending billions in New Orleans, but so little for SW LA or SE TX.

Interesting how really bad stuff brings out the best and the worst in people. We live outside Houston's northern limits. We were very blessed, but so many of our neighbors suffered a lot -- and are still suffering at the hands of many "companies" who came to "help," though many hundreds really DID come to help. Can't blame God for any of this 'cause we live contrary to Him and His righteousness every moment of every day. He just loves us THROUGH tough times, promising eternal life in true perfection to those who only believe.

I'm very sorry for everyone's loss. The pictures are devasting for for me to look at. I'm only too sure it's extremely worse for you to go through it. I have family that was too close to the California fires in the last two years. My family pulled together just as I'm sure yours is. You are all in our prayers, please believe.

We are used to weather extremes here in MT, but I really feel for you people who "ride out" these hurricanes. Keep the spirit as I know you are a strong community. You are in our prayers.

To all who suffered personal losses, and severe damage to homes, etc. My heart goes out to you all...
I just view the pictures and I am in awe of what a hurricane like Ike can do to a persons life as a whole.
So sorry!

Insurance companies have not been very sympathetic to the ones affected.

Thanks to all for the prayers and support. I live in the Houston area and I can tell you that I've NEVER been more proud to be a Texan. We do not whine, cry or beg. We are strong. We are determined. We will persevere, rebuild and come back stronger than ever!

Today is Thanksgiving, and I am more thankful on this day, this year, than ever before. I, my wife, and two children lost everything we owned to Ike, except for what we took with us in our two cars when we evacuated 09/11/08. Our single story house on Galveston Island had three feet of water in it when it caught on fire. The amount of fuel that fed the fire due to Ike's winds is evident in how completely the house burned. Ironically, there is a clear line throughout the house that shows how high the water was; nothing below that line was touched by the flames.
It sounds cliche, but we really only lost "things". Granted to us through various blessings whether by gift, giving or purchase, they don't come close to the truest blessing in this life; my family is safe and in good health (so are our pets).

I have a problem helping so many other people ~ when people in our own country need us so much.

It is very sad that this was not shown on TV, cause of the presidencial publicities. It seems to me that ike did lots of damages than Katrina, ever did, yet the help
we are getting from the goverment that set up to help in this situation, are not
responding as good as they did for the Katrina evacue. Every 1 need help cause,
even the people that makes more money got the same damages as the poor 1 did. They will spend extra out of pocket money just to get the house in order, wether they up date or not, They will still have to boot out money out of their pocket.
The help they offer us, is loan, which, i don't need. My credit card is over 30k as .is already
