2008 Asian Beach Games
About a month ago in Bali, Indonesia, the inaugural 2008 Asian Beach Games came to its conclusion. Intended to promote sports and culture, the games (held every two years) encourage tourism, support local economies and allow host countries like Indonesia to present a more global face to the world. The 2008 games brought 6,000 athletes to compete in 71 events in 19 sports. Sports included well-known games like beach volleyball and triathlon, and some sports better known to asians, like sepak takraw, kabaddi and pencak silat. The next Asian Beach Games are scheduled to be hosted by Oman in the year 2010. (25 photos total)

very nice set of pictures. I like the last one a lot!
some of the other ones are nice and some quite funny :)
#14 - haha all of the guy's faces look photoshoped.
Wow, pic 2 is epic.
lol.. took only 1 comment for someone to mention #18 into the comments :) Who would have thunk it..
¡Fotografía colosal!
More volley ball girls would have been welcome ;-)
greats pics! tks!
#18
Nice set. I just love Bali, looking forward to going there again! Great to see Indonesians / Balinese organise such an event.
Great ! Paragliding... In spite of beautiful #18s picture, my fovorit still pictures with paragliding !
Im glad to see this activity here !
#14 looks so strange and unnatural...
now we need to implement these games and sports to the West...
I'm loving this blog...great shots every time!
I love that they all look like they're having fun. There aren't many looks of anger, like it's just a competition and they're there to win. Athletes who enjoy what they do...love it.
Competitive paragliding? Why does everything have to be a competition?
How have I NEVER heard of this competition?! Thank you for opening my eyes.
Great pictures!
However, caption for picture #4 implies that the games last a full year.
#22 - "Chinese player Gong Yan prepares to launch the ball to Thailand..." Wow - she must have a really good arm!
best pictures so far!
excellent photographers, excellent shots. really amazing. never saw the shots like these here before nor anywhere.
So colorful and exotic.
Thanks, Rosemary
Amazing collection of photos. Thanks!

#25 - pure freedom...
awesome pictures, thank you for this fantastic blog!
a great one the last one!
Could we declare a permanent moratorium on pictures like #18? That shot's been done before and as a guy who actually enjoys beach volleyball I'd prefer to see the actual game...
Wellcome To Indonesia !
"Could we declare a permanent moratorium on pictures like #18? That shot's been done before and as a guy who actually enjoys beach volleyball I'd prefer to see the actual game...ment here..."
This whole portfolio could have been nothing but shots of that woman's hand signals and it still wouldn't be too much. #18 makes a man want to go visit Kazakhstan.
Great Pictures....
#15 - You can do eeet Rob!
#19 - Yumpin Yemeni!
Very beautiful picture. Thanks very much to make them share to every body.
# 6, 15, 20, 24 !!!
#18 Wow!!!
...and all pictures is nice shot.....
18 wins.
Stunning selection of pictures. Super job as usual.
These are just terrific!
18...ugh. Is there a game happening? How about a close-up of a man's crotch in a speedo -- to even things out a bit if we're changing the subject from sports to flesh. I'm not surprised, though. The US broadcast of the Olympics included nearly the entire WOMEN'S (or should I say "chicks" or "*itches") beach volleyball tourney at the expense of other sports. If I didn't know better, based on the US prime time broadcast, the Olympics are exclusively about beach volleyball and swimming, and primarily driven by men wanting to check out women's bodies. One-dimensional, predictable and appealing to the *lowest common denominator.* Grow up.
#18 could bring about world peace !
#15 takes the cake for me. love the action there.
some of the most beautiful yet
I really like number 18. These are really great quality pics.
@Rich: Ease up, man! Women wouldn't mind a close op of a man's crotch in a speedo, and you know it!
great pics,neverseen before
What's the problem with competitive paragliding? It's pretty popular. Everything DOESN"T have to be a competition, but some people like to test themselves like that.,
#13 Aie =s
#18 Mh =D
#19 Wow O_o
"@Rich: Ease up, man! Women wouldn't mind a close op of a man's crotch in a speedo, and you know it!"
Sure, Brett, but we never do seem to see those in the news, do we?
nice pictures - I liked a lot.
AMAZING.....BALI IS THE GREAT AND THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ISLAND ON EARTH.
As Indonesian, we welcoming you in Bali...and feel the difference.
incredible pictures, in particular 1 an 6.
Good job !
Thanks for the cultural appreciation pics in 4, 5 and 7. So many other great action shots to comment on. That sepaktakraw game looks hard. Volleyball with your feet? Crazy!
At least make picture # 18 optional so we can share this post with our children or see these pictures at work without someone accusing us of inappropriate material. Including # 18 cheapens the rest of the journalistic accomplishment of this blog. Where else can we see the exceptional exposure (no pun intended) of such a broad range of topics? That's why we come here - not to see something from Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition.

I totally agree!!!

People finding #18 offensive are the ones who should seriously grow up. Pathetic stance.
Couldnt agree more KD. Dad with 3 boys, no one cares. Grow up Sir. Embarrassing...
superb........really awesome
wow, seriously, what is up with 14??? their heads look ginormous compared to their bodies, very disproportionate. kinda creepy!
Très belles photos
In french in the texte
@michele - the thing with #14 is that the bodybuilders are limited to 60kg, that is about 130lbs here in the States. So they start out with a smaller frame, on which to build their amazing musculature. We're just more accustomed to seeing such development on larger people who therefore have smaller heads relative to their bodies, but those guys in #14 are not really out of proportion.
Generally: awesome photos, great job! It makes me want to learn more about some of those sports I know nothing about. Kabaddi is the only sport I've heard of which is timed by the holding of a breath - what a great idea!!!
About #18 and sharing this post with children: kids know about bottoms (after all, everyone has one!) and generally speaking are more willing to laugh at them than adults. Unless you're going to keep your kids away from the beach, don't worry. In fact, making a big deal about #18 gives them a counterproductive message.
WOW! I never known that this event! Im from Malaysia and i never think Sepak Takraw, Silat and Kabaddi are played on the beach!
GREAT #1 pic. Is it taken with underwater casing?
I just love Bali, half of my heart lies there...great pics!
My favourite shot by far is #12
I'm sorry, but I just had to write this, because of the controversy:
#18 : GREAT tush !!!!!!
I am glad to see sandball out there => best sport ever.
Great pictures. As always, the Big Picture manages to bring up some of the best works of photojournalism recently.
#13: Its not the United 'Arabic' Emirates, instead United Arab Emirates. Thats the typo I came across.
Wonderful images. I loved #1 and # 19. I'm still trying to figure out how you popped the swimmer with light without the water in the forground being washed out. Great moment. #19 is fantastic, something different. Good job.
Great pics! the color is so vibrant on them!
and anyone who makes a big deal about #18, it's just someone's butt, and if you'd get over it, and just tell your kids, or whoever, that it's just a butt, that's what they'll think! it's just a butt! but some people have to make it a bad thing, and that's what gets you in trouble!
Shots like 18 are tired and unnecessary. If as a photographer, thats what you have to do to grasp your viewer's attention, you should rethink your career or see if Maxim or Playboy has any gigs for you. All T and A all the time is all that gets these d bags attention, but why cater to the d bags? The set was classy and beautifully done without 18. Way to stoop.
Simply brilliant!
O kur.a! Zajefajne!
its nice shoot..good for photograper
Thanks to man makes these pictures. it can show me how is it the Bali beach is.
